I wanna get 3ds homebrew working so I can play 3ds hacks. But I have 2 issues. 1. I don't know how safe it is. 2. I'm not allowed to download things onto my 3ds, so I'd need to sneak it on without my parents(or sister) knowing. Any idea how I could overcome these issues? I am pretty confident that the software it's self is safe, but I don't want something to sneak in while I'm downloading it to my 3ds for obvious reasons. Just trying to be clear on my problems here. Thanks!

1. It's completely safe—just stay away from tools like sysUpdater, etc.
2. You need to put some files on the SD card, no way around that. You'll need to extract the starter kit from here to the root of your SD card. To launch homebrew you can use browserhax as described on the page and then install menuhax, which the others using the 3DS shouldn't notice unless they hold the button combination to trigger it.

I have no problem hiding files and stuff on an SD card that is fine. But do I need to use the 3ds to download the software? In other words do I need to download it with my 3ds?

Okay thank you! Just by pure coincidence (and luck) I happen to have picked up an extra SD card a while ago that is not in use. That makes it a lot easier because now I don't need to come up with an excuse to get one.

EDIT: As you said I'll just use the SD card that came with it. That thought actually never crossed my mind.

That's pretty sweet. I got Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door yesterday.

I am loving the work I see so far. Did you put in custom terrain for ground and stuff? Or has it really been that long since I've played NSMB2? Also how are you doing this hacking(not trying to be rude in the slightest I'm actually curious)

Coinkiller isn't able to do proper editing yet...

That's what I thought. What is he using then?

I assume he's using CoinKiller.

And uh... you don't have to appologize for everything. Good ol' Arisotura won't ban you for asking a simple question.

probably.

I know that but I just wanna be clear that I'm not trying to be rude or anything.

I have come across 2 new problems. I want to insert a custom background over"Foggy Forest" which is an existing one found in the level where you rescue Mario. I know I need to locate it within the file system but I can't find it. The other issue is I want to play a mini game song in one of my levels but I don't have the numbers that go in the level settings. Do you by chance have them? Thanks man! :D

Okay thanks! I'll ask around about the music changing. Do you guys have any idea how to change the draw distance? Thanks!

I tried to patch the xdelta patch but it gives me an invalid input error when I try patching it. Could I be using the wrong rom version? What version are you using?

The short answer is no you cannot use it with star road. I did take the time to make a Luigi version of it though. Here's the link to the patch: http://www.mediafire.com/download/sm5ggjkvwcj54ec/Super_Luigi_Star_Road.zip

I just figured out I was wrong, you can patch the luigi patch on a star road rom. But there are several odd glitches I've encountered. The title screen is black, luigi's colors are different(to say the least). And the texts from toad's and stuff can be rather weird at times.

That is a nintendo level mod! The only thing is DK looks a little odd when he ground pounds, but that's really the only flaw I noticed! Great work! :D

I changed the warps around to make it so at the end of bowser in the sky you fight the 2nd bowser boss. However when his flames disappear(after he breaths fire) the game crashes. If it helps to know this I used Yoshi to play it. Thanks!

I just tried that and it did the exact same thing as before. It froze when the flame disappeared.
