The FairPhone

So it's a smartphone that is supposedly producted in ethic ways. The site probably does a better job at explaining that shit, but they try hard not to get materials mined by enslaved kids in Congolese mines.

The other interesting bit is that it is modular and built to last long. Unlike, you know, every consumer toy produced by the capitalist system. You can replace faulty parts easily, or maybe upgrade it.

But it's interesting that you can own a smartphone without participating to the capitalism absurdities. It's expensive (I saw $529), but hey, I'm considering it for my next phone. My current phone is nearly 3 years old, hasn't seen updates in ages, still has software-induced battery draining at random, got its power button replaced...

Huh, this looks pretty interesting. $529 doesn't seem that bad, considering a brand-new 32GB iPhone 6 costs $900+ over here.

Unfortunately, this will probably fade into obscurity. People will say "Hey, cool!", it'll be featured in a few places then everyone will forget of its existence.

You can be part of the effort that will change that. Pass the word.

I read it's only available in Europe though. Hopefully that will change.

I'm sort of skeptical. I feel like there might be catches or darker things the producers behind the phone doesn't want you to know. Kind of like bait and switch.

Instead of buying the FairPhone, try considering buying the Four Dollar Android Phone. (Yes, FOUR dollars.)

I like the idea of a modular phone, honestly.

However, I want to see how well it'll work in the future, ie. if it'll be akin to ATX desktop PCs, or if it'll be another planned obsolescence fest because the formats keep changing.
