The FairPhone
So it's a smartphone that is supposedly producted in ethic ways. The site probably does a better job at explaining that shit, but they try hard not to get materials mined by enslaved kids in Congolese mines. The other interesting bit is that it is modular and built to last long. Unlike, you know, every consumer toy produced by the capitalist system. You can replace faulty parts easily, or maybe upgrade it. But it's interesting that you can own a smartphone without participating to the capitalism absurdities. It's expensive (I saw $529), but hey, I'm considering it for my next phone. My current phone is nearly 3 years old, hasn't seen updates in ages, still has software-induced battery draining at random, got its power button replaced... ____________________ NSMBHD - Kafuka - Jul melonDS the most fruity DS emulator there is zafkflzdasd |

Embodiment of Time Can someone lead me to a non-capitalist clothing store? Level: 128 Posts: 5024/5087 EXP: 23799595 Next: 582105 Since: 07-07-12 Last post: 2197 days ago Last view: 759 days ago |
Huh, this looks pretty interesting. $529 doesn't seem that bad, considering a brand-new 32GB iPhone 6 costs $900+ over here.
Unfortunately, this will probably fade into obscurity. People will say "Hey, cool!", it'll be featured in a few places then everyone will forget of its existence. ____________________

I'm sort of skeptical. I feel like there might be catches or darker things the producers behind the phone doesn't want you to know. Kind of like bait and switch.

Instead of buying the FairPhone, try considering buying the Four Dollar Android Phone. (Yes, FOUR dollars.) <Silvreus>I am a random person…

Posted by LeftyGreenMario I like the idea of a modular phone, honestly. However, I want to see how well it'll work in the future, ie. if it'll be akin to ATX desktop PCs, or if it'll be another planned obsolescence fest because the formats keep changing. Posted by Lunarius wtf haxing the market Anyway, I'm only interested if I can resell it at higher prices later ____________________ NSMBHD - Kafuka - Jul melonDS the most fruity DS emulator there is zafkflzdasd |

Bumping because I feel like this post may interest somebody on this.
Another interesting smartphone is the Librem 5. So it’s a crowdsourced smartphone made with Free and Open Source Hardware and can run most GNU Linux distros, running PureOS by default. It’s got very broad network compatibility that’s compatible with 2G/3G/4G and LTE to name a few. It also lets you pick and choose if you want a carrier or not and it’s widely communicable with Android, iOS, Windows among other things too. And it’s got hardware kill switches to cut off communication from things like the baseband, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth etc. But it’s not as modular as the Fairphone is because only the battery is what you can change. The Librem 5 is supposed to be released in 2019. I just made this post because it kinda goes along with the theme of the Fairphone. Here it is. ____________________ Netplay is a language we all speak. Here’s my Discord. Kinda constructed now where we talk about whatever and lounge around on weekends. https://discord.gg/CqMArxq |

Things like this always make the news and disappear into obscurity and end up being only used by IT geeks, like the such as Mastodon/GNUSocial and diaspora* are mainly used by Linux users... and Linux users are mostly people that know their way around tech enough.
Also, best bet if you want an “LTS iPhone” is an iPhone SE since they’re not produced every year like the other iPhones, though avoiding anything Apple is a good thing. I only go for them because Android phones are the size of a fucking gaming laptop screen now. |
