I guess all is said in the title, but

would any of you fine folks, desire a forum on this board that is only accessible to logged-in users?

first point would be keeping random derps out, although admittedly the entry barrier to this board is as low as it gets

second point would be keeping Google out, as well as other search engines & co.

so the shit in there isn't googlable


we could make the serious discussion forum be that forum, or make an entirely new one, or multiple ones


on the technical side of the shito, we could do it by keeping banned users out of the forum entirely, with adequate permissions

then, change the board to use the banned group permissions for guests, rather than the normal user group permissions

(noting that this doesn't matter except for this very case, because as far as guests are concerned, the only relevant permissions are the 'view forum X' ones)

the issue with that kind of door open to guests, is how to identify them without an account. IPs aren't reliable enough to do the job alone (dynamic IPs, proxies, connecting from different places...).

'aight, there it is. I had forgotten that the permission system has a separate code path for guest permissions (those are always loaded, to determine which forums are public).
