I have no hacking knowledge but want to get into it after seeing all the amazing things people have created. Like the title says, what is the best game to get into and where should you learn? From tutorials or just from messing around in editors? |

The first one I got into was NSMBW, and I just messed around with the editor until I figured it out. ____________________ Just a fucktard |

rather than asking us, you should pick a game you like, is well documented and has good tools.
take nsmb for example. or NSMB2, this board is kinda the one place for that. |

NSMB is the easiest IMO. The tools are easy to understand, testing is easy and editing doesn't require anything done beforehand. Just open the rom. ____________________ Nothing to say, so jadnjkfmnjamnfjkldnajfnjkanfjdksan jsdnvj m. |

New Super Mario Bros DS and 2 are probably the easiest to hack. DS proably even e bit easier as you can better test stuff in an emulator. Stay away from SM64 or Galaxy for now if you are not familliar with 3d modelling as that requres a lot of work and is not that easy to get into. ____________________ GitHub - YouTube - NSMBHD |

Though if you don't mind 3d modelling then you should try SM64DS - the editor is very easy to use and the model importing works quite well. |

Thanks for all of the replies. I think I am going to do NSMBW because I actually have that game (I lost the ds one a while ago) and from the videos I have seen the editor doesn't look to hard. I can't wait to start. Currently I am waiting for the game to copy to my sd card. |

I started on smg2 it took around 2 weeks to learn how to edit and use it properly but, it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. ____________________ Skek is a Fortnite god |

I love SMG2, and it is the game I hack the most (speaking of which.. I haven't released a SINGLE custom level!!!). But to get started, I would use NSMBW. Almost all objects are well documented and, as you said, the editor is very easy to use. If you need help with some things (like sprite areas or entrances) you can ask, and usually you will figure out your problems. Custom powerups are possible (although hard, I have never made one ), as well as cutom tilesets. This opens up many posibilities for levels, or even making levels that look like they are from a different game! |

Actually I do have a question. Do most people hack on the newer engine? How can I do that? And are there any good tutorials for NSMBW hacking? I guess that was a little more than one question. |

I am in the process of live streaming tutorials for modding SMG2 and NSMBW. You can tune in when I stream on YouTube to learn (that is, if you like my videos. If not, I don't think there are any video tutorials out there.
The best way to learn is really just a long PM conversation with someone, where you ask them a bunch of questions and they answer them. This is how I learned SMG2 (thanks, Super Hackio!) |

Posted by meme_man64 Agreed! (Did you see how quickly Skek got US into that game?) Of course, if you don't like pokemon; MKWII, NSMBDS, NSMBWII, SM64DS would be good options. ____________________ SMG RUN Progress: Not available here, for more information, check my Youtube Channel |

Posted by BeardedOranges Most people do hack the Newer engine (I think), and it's quite easy to do. Get the decompressed files for Newer here and import the tilesets into the texture folder within "stage" and import the Newer stages into a separate folder. If you want, you could also change the game path to Newer's stage folder. Other things (such as sprites) requires a bit of code (as far as I know) to get into Reggie!, so I think the best option for a beginner is a mod of Reggie! known as "Reggie! Next," but you could also use the "Reggie! Newer Sprites" mod, or other mods that I don't know of. ____________________ Just a fucktard |
