Was the reason "]Shit's going down in USA (and everywhere else too)" thread went to the trash. It might've started with DoubleYoshiExploshi's question of "if you complain about it why don't you do anything about it" which is in my opinion, a form of tu quoque fallacy, which is a faulty way to discredit an opponent's argument. Don't try it. Also, fyi, how you complain "it's annoying after a while" is not a legit complaint and can come off as concern trolling and tone trolling to other users. Now, this isn't DoubleYoshiExploshi's problem since he stopped but Spacey decided to do the same thing, but looks even more like actual concern trolling. Spacey engaged in extremely dishonest and disingenuous methods of arguing. It's dishonest because it's an ad homenium tu quoque as he accuses StapleButter of not embracing what he's doing and only using the suffering to embrace his views. It's disingenuous because discussing about it and acting on it are not mutually exclusive things and IMO StapleButter is likely powerless or financially strapped himself to give aid (remember he said he doesn't know if the money he gives will actually go to those services).

The act of saying "oh you're talking about economic divide that the storm clearly illustrated and making it a criticism of capitalism means you're only using it for selfish reasons" or "stop making it political" is definitely dishonest concern trolling. It's the same tactic climate change denier Scott Pruitt uses to discredit global warming by saying people are "offending Floridians" by discussing anthropomorphic climate change.

I don't think making crappy arguments is a basis for getting banned, but the Spacey decides to create multiple socks to give the appearance of more of a consensus, which again, is extremely dishonest. My suspicions were there, but Spacey destroyed his last shred of credibility by reregging or using meatpuppets just to make a point.

I'd criticize StapleButter on his fixation of capitalism but not in the same manner as Spacey has done. StapleButter has flaws like anyone else, but don't be a dishonest troll about it.

I wasn't trolling. I shouldn't have posted though, since I don't really know what I'm talking about.

I agree with Spacey getting banned. Using sockpuppets just to prove a point is a bit pathetic.

besides, I actually do things, as I'm into militant groups.

anyway, the thread was mostly trashed because there's no point going on forever-- we get the message, capitalism is bad, etc. I also don't want the board to become some political echo chamber, so we're limiting politics. it's still fine to have debates as long as they stay civil, but this is mostly a general discussion board and should stay that.

besides, I can get carried away by political shit, and I'm aware of it, so limiting politics is a good thing to do.

regarding Spacey, I was told that the 'sockpuppets' actually joined under their own decision. but regardless, this isn't middle school playground, this way of 'debating' isn't welcome here. what do you expect when you try ganging up against your opponent and cornering them? that they suddently give up their beliefs and kiss your feet? this kind of method is no better than the "convert or die" crusades of the past.

I know you weren't trolling, I wouldn't assume it. I'd assume just you not knowing the subject too well. However, I was trying to warn you that for other people, it might be a different matter all together and they may interpret your post as tone trolling. I just advise caution for those kinds of people. But Spacey was a different matter all together.

fair enough but they don't seem like they have any real purpose other than an axe to grind. If they did, they'd offer better arguments than "lol ur wrong". I'm not sure if locking the thread was the completely the right thing to do because it might come off as silencing dissent but no stopping in creating a new one. smh

I realize that this might not be the best post to make after being unbanned, but I think I have the right to at least defend myself as I feel that LeftyGreenMario misrepresented what I was actually saying in my posts in the now defunct thread. I can easily see why though, as its true that I was being rude about it (I had family in florida at the time of irma so some of the posts really rubbed me the wrong way).

My point in that thread was that acting as if doing away with capitalism was the only way to fix the problems arising from irma and harvey was wrong and made it seem like staple was just using these disasters as political ammo. However, its possible I misinterpreted what staple actually meant (just as you have misinterpreted what I meant). Donating was simply an example of a seperate solution and not me saying "don't complain if you don't help", though its also true that I suggested methods such as sharing links to reputable places that you could go to help out. While my temperment was wrong, being rude isn't acceptable if I want to make a point, I still stand by my opinion that it is wrong to act as if capitalism is the root of this problem and not just being affected as part of a bigger political problem.

Here is hoping we can put this behind us now that what actually happened has been cleared up; this will be my last post on the subject.

Capitalism isn't "the root of the problems arising from hurricanes", but trying to sell water packs for $42 when there are people in desperate need for attention is wrong. Hell, where do you even see water packs being sold at such ridiculous prices in normal situations?

I felt that this needed to be pointed out, especially since mainstream media would rather not have you learn about such issues.

I have no personal interest in this shit. The board doesn't serve to recruit anarchists or whatever.

While I know that I can get carried away by political shit, I don't want to turn the place into a political echo chamber.

That's all.

Besides, that thread is done with now, so let's move on.

Why isn't this closed?

Though, to put my thoughts in, I actually feel lately Staple has been a lot more tolerant of people and the fact he's letting people back (myself included)... a lot of forum admins wouldn't think twice of even talking to a banned user let alone unbanning them not too long after they're banned like Staple did with Spacy recently.
