Introduction
Hello fellow Nintendo modder! Welcome to the Super Mario Galaxy Modding Manual #1! Modding Mario games is a very interesting and fun experience, but modding Super Mario Galaxy is the most enjoyable. You can create the galaxies of your dreams and explore them as the red-hatted plumber himself! Remember. You must homebrew your Wii and get both the Homebrew Channel and Riivolution before starting at all. But without further delay, Here's how to begin modding Super Mario Galaxy. Getting SMGExtractor SMGExtractor is a special file extractor for both Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, created by Mega-Mario. It's possibly the easiest way to extract the game's files. The extractor ONLY works for Super Mario Galaxy games. Any other game will not extract properly, if not destroying the disc's contents. First, download SMGExtractor using the following link. https://kuribo64.net/get.php?id=GlgBKNPEVZV99IFn Next, if you're using Homebrew Channel, just extract the apps folder to the root of your SD card (or whatever you use to load homebrews). Otherwise, find boot.dol and put it in an appropriate place. The two other files are irrelevant then. Getting SMGFiles SMGFiles is basically all the game's content. It contains StageData (All the stages), ObjectData, (All the objects, enemies, etc), AudioRes (The game's music and sounds), LayoutData (All the textures including the Startup Logo and the Pause Menu), MovieData (All the full-rendered cutscenes EX: the cutscene that plays when the Comet observatory turns into a comet), ParticleData (All the games special effects) and much more. All the text is located in files EuEnglish, EuDutch, EuGerman, EuSpanish and EuFrench for PAL Reigons and UsEnglish, UsSpanish and UsFrench in NTSC Reigons. I have no idea what japan uses for their text. Here's how to get SMGFiles using SMGExtractor. Turn your Wii on and launch SMGExtractor. Insert your SMG1 or SMG2 disc and follow the on-screen instructions. Once the extraction process has started, find something else to do in the meantime, as the process takes a while to complete. Once it's done, you can turn your Wii off and all. You'll find a SMGFiles folder at the root of your storage medium, containing all the files you chose to extract. Congratulations, you can now start modifying SMG legally! If the extract process failed, check out the troubleshooting section in this link. https://kuribo64.net/board/thread.php?pid=13698 Safe Placement If you want to remember where you put SMGFiles, create a folder on your desktop and put "SMG Mod Folder" as the folder's name. in the folder, create another folder called "Assets" and put SMGFiles in there. However if you're wishing to use some of the sequels content in your hack of Super Mario Galaxy, create two files with the first file being named "Assets (SMG1)" and the second file being named "Assets (SMG2)". End of First Manual Well, now you know how to get the extractor and files for Super Mario Galaxy. In Super Mario Galaxy Modding Manual #2, we're gonna learn how to edit levels using a visual level editor called "Whitehole" and playtest your custom mod with the help of a SMG Toolpack. See ya then! |

Oh, thanks for this, now I have some recent information to get into SMG hacking, even though it's considered "dead" |

Posted by Bantten Except we are always trying to provide a HUB for SMG2 hacking at http://eggstargalaxy.bplaced.net but yet this site still has more SMG related activity than that ones does. Creating custom Mario Galaxy levels was an amibitious concept that seems to have been destroyed after 2.5 died and Kuribo64 abandoned SMG. Now it seems nobody really gives a shit about it at all. It's sad, there was still a lot of unexplored potential. But it just took a lot of time to build quality levels... Sorry /rantover I strayed a bit from the topic anyways, this appears to be a nice tutorial, if for just a part one. Well done. |

Please note that this is mainly aimed towards SMG1 hacking due to it being easier, more interesting and having less chances of crashing. Yet again, both games use the same type of file layout (SMGFiles) so I guess you could say these are tutorials for both! |

Posted by videostar704 Well honestly i'd disagree. SMG2 hacking is way easier to me because the game files arent a mess and we generally know how a lot of stuff works, compared to SMG1. Also, both games only crash if you make a mistake, such as not giving an object paths that needs them or adding too many objects. And generally, there's much more potential with SMG2 because you can port some objects from SMG1 too. You can't do it the other way around. |

Well it all depends on how you start. I started hacking with SMG1 and not SMG2, so I naturally feel like SMG1 is easier to modify. |

Posted by videostar704 That's understandable. In some ways it is. I just prefer the file layout of SMG2 which is much less of a mess. |

Super Mario was actually one of the 5 games that i played when I first got my Wii as a kid! I didn't get the sequel until 3 years passed. Honestly, SMG1 feels like the better game. Sure SMG2 has yoshi, new powerups and a bonus world after you beat the game. But SMG1 has a 2 powerups that aren't in the sequel, fully-rendered cutscenes, memorable stages, incredible music, a ton of unused content and a clean, memorable story. SMG1 has a special place in my heart, while SMG2, to me, just doesn't have that same magical feeling as the first game. Even if, both games are really fun to play! |

ANd honestly, SMG1 hacking is easier to me. I can completely recreate a galaxy and it would'nt fail in any way! In SMG2, I can't even move a coin without the game having to crash! |

No im totally with you dude I think SMG1 is the better game I just think theres more possibility hacking SMG2 because of more objects but making SMG1 levels is cool too I don't think i've made one yet I should soon. |

Depends on the user's preferences. I prefer galaxy 1 because of the hub world in particular.. and it being a bit more simple than smg2 |

I suggest just dumping the game using CleanRip, transferring it to the computer and using Dolphin Emulator to extract it. This has been successful for every GameCube/Wii game I have tried. ____________________ |
