Windows XP is long dead, and won't get any updates anymore.
However, since lots of governments worldwide are still stuck with Windows XP, and this Ransomware is so dangerous, Microsoft made an exception.

I'm sorry to disappoint you sir, but no, that doesn't mean they're going to revive Windows XP.

That's not what I meant. Of course they're not going to revive XP.

Fair point, although come to think of it, I'm not entirely sure how to turn what I was thinking into words...so uh, nevermind, I guess ._.

About Microsoft's "Windows" design, I like Win7 where they actually look a lot like Windows. I don't like Win8's or Win10's "Windows" design.

On Linux (I'm using MATE), I can simply install some custom themes from MATE-Look.org, and have something that doesn't look like anyone else.
It's also possible on Windows, but only through 3rd party apps...
But, why risking your PC with 3rd party apps on Windows, while you can have them natively on Linux?

Windows 10 got an update some time ago and I just around to installing it because why not.

And it's fucking awful.

This is how it went down
----
Computer: Ey fam, we got an update for you
Me: Oh cool, no thanks though.
C: When do you want to restart your computer?

So I went ahead and restarted not thinking that it you take up half my day because I thought it was just a regular update, but in the words of good ol Donnie Trump, "WRONG"
My computer finally reboots and...

C: Hey fam, we went ahead and re-enabled all that spyware that you didn't want.
M: I guess I can deal with that.
C: We've also add more spyware to your tool bar and fucked up your desktop for you while adding more crap to stuff that didn't need it.
----
In short, Microsoft somehow made an already terrible OS even worse than it was before.
I bet they installed something like a key logger while they where at it.

I just got a VM with Windows 10. I really don't like it. In fact, I hate it. Now, I'll let some quotes from me tell my overall opinion.
I wanna rant, Microsoft!

meanwhile, Windows 7 is cozy

but, you know that someone went and ran Windows 10 in a VM with all the spyware and crap disabled?

and, surprise, it still sends shit.

I should do the same with Windows 7. we never know. but atleast, Windows 7 respects your choice and doesn't reenable things behind your back.

Some Windows 7 updates give it the same telemetry shite as Windows 10, sometimes even worse (and then there's the update changes but that's another story). You could think "Oh, I'll just skip them," but no, some of those updates are tagged as critical so the system most probably will install them whenever you want or not.

I still find it hillarious how people assume 3rd party tools can block literally all the spyware Microsoft ever added into Windows since its very existence...
Just for those who don't know, Windows is a closed source OS, it's impossible to know whether you've blocked everything or not, and whether Microsoft added/changed/deleted anything or not.

Let's be honest here, when did Microsoft actually make an operating system (or any other piece of software) that doesn't suck?
I do like their keyboards, mice, and tablets, but each software product they ever made is bloated as fuck, confusing, buggy, etc.
But at least it got all the ROM Hacking tools...

I find it hilarious when people complain about W10 privacy. Win8 and Win7 in a certain extent sent the exact same things. The only difference is that now, Windows doesn't hide it from you like before. Also this:

Looks gorgeous.

hurr windoze sux

I'm no Microsoft fanboy but Windows gets the job done, atleast for me. so does Linux.

but people acting all smug because they use something that isn't Windows get on my nerves. even moreso when what they use is OSX.

I figure, which is why I want to check it.

but the general mindset seems to be "okay we can't hide these things anymore, so let's try to normalize them".

the possibility of an era where everybody accepts the anal probes is a scary foresight. even moreso with the shitty counterargument of "you have things to hide, you are suspicious, you must be a terrorist".

think about it: it's like you're having an intimate moment with your girlfriend or boyfriend or whatever, cuddling etc, and you find out there's a stranger in the room recording your interactions and transmitting them to an external entity.

Eh, that's precisely not my point here.
I don't say I hate Windows because I use Linux, I only give my genuine opinion as a Linux user since her first PC with a GUI.

You often hear from Windows users on how confusing and hard Linux is, but I also found Windows very confusing and hard to use, compared to Linux.
Not because it's a fact, but simply because you're used to something else.

I do need to use Windows for ROM Hacking tools, and for Premiere Pro, but other than that, my sole Windows PC is turned off at all times.

And please, quote the whole paragraph, instead of just one sentence...
The reasons I gave weren't even quoted there, which makes it seem like you're completely ignoring all of that...

well, I mostly reacted to that particular bit because it's not entirely true. Microsoft is far from perfect, but they do provide some very good software.

an example would be Intellisense in Visual Studio. I have yet to find a good equivalent in another IDE. Netbeans' version was slow, and whenever it worked, it got in the way more than it helped. CodeBlocks has a better one, but it's still not as good as Intellisense.

so it's not like Microsoft produces nothing but trash. however, they do make stupid decisions. since we're talking about Visual Studio, why does the free version require registration? the only purpose I can think of is tracking the users.

another prime example would be how the defragmenter tool was destroyed in Windows Vista. it devolved from complete view and control over the process, to a black box where you click a button and wait until it's done and you're considered too dumb to understand more information. maybe some people found it too complicated (choosing a drive to defragment is too complex??), but it lacked something as basic as a progress bar, or which drive is being defragmented.

and this is in reply to the whole paragraph.

good point.

as far as telemetry is concerned, a possibility is to sniff the network. if you don't trust Windows to not have special handling for anal-probe packets that hides them from Wireshark & co., you can run Wireshark on a separate computer on the same network, running Linux.

the packets would be encrypted, but you could see which servers are being contacted.

Windows 10 Has served me well so far... (minus those viruses)
My only complaints are the OS crashes and automatic updates. (OS crashes are rare for me. Does anyone else have this?)

What a bleak, pathetic future people have decided we're inevitably headed towards. But the worst part is...it's only true because people think it is :/
