There was no Aero in 2003, Windows XP's theme was called "Luna", and it came out in 2001, not 2003.

Wrong. There most certainly were early versions of Aero in 2003. Lots of them.

and before you argue that those are all just concepts, yes, they are, so here are some real builds of Windows that actually exist and are actually out there:

I actually prefer to have a nice glass effect over having a single, blinding colour right in your face...

I completely agree.

flat themes can be good when well done.

Easier said than done, but yes, I agree with that too.

So, wait...is this patch separate from the WannaCry one? I would've thought so, but this:
Posted by Dilene
Petya has been around for some time already. This is mostly an update to it to use the same exploit as WannaCry.

seemingly indicates otherwise...??

IMO Megaleg is probably one of the most feasible SMG1 bosses to replicate in SMG2...

...I tried a while ago, actually. Note to self: Get back to that.

Some are able to disable the Windows Update service.

I've never been able to do so on 10, but you may fare better. Go to services.msc and see if you can mess with the service's startup type.

I love the Longhorn Plex inspired design there Splitz! ^^

Thanks :3

(In that case, guess I'd best note the Plexcellent thread, rather than accidentally hijacking this one, lol)

So painfully true...

...would've been fun to see a Part 2 where he disables the Windows Update service to lock Windows 10 out, lol

DownThemAll! is missing the top frame so I can't maximize/minimize/move the window. Shame.

Have you tried using Windows Key+Arrow Keys to Maximize, Minimize, and Snap Left/Right?

services.msc, kill the fucker from there (stop it and tell it to never start again)

...to clarify this for anyone else reading this thread, you can set the Windows Update Services' startup type to "Disabled" to prevent it from starting.

there is that security update against the leaked NSA exploits, tho. you can download it and install it standalone, just like pretty much any update. maybe doing so reenables Windows Update as a side-effect, I don't remember.

I have it installed and can verify that, atleast on Windows 8.1, it does not re-enable Windows update. You have to temporarily re-enable the service to install it, but it doesn't even try to stop you from disabling it again afterwards.
Thankfully.

Start9 is a modular, extensible Shell supplement for windows. Still in its early stages of development currently, and we need all the help we can get to make this happen.

Strange, It just so happens that I am working on a similar project called Atelerix-Shell. It is still in the works of course. I am using C++. I began working on the project back in November. If you want to check it out, you can find it here.

I think that looks bad tbh

Thanks, captain obvious. We haven't even started on making it look nice, I'm just showing that it (mostly) works .-.

EDIT: Sorry, that came out a lot more hostile than I'd intended. Guess I should've clarified in the post about it. Sorry about that :/

It's nice to see people actually trying to create a good Explorer replacement. Hopefully this goes somewhere.

...do they normally only create bad explorer replacements or something? .-.

Experimenting with detecting dominant colours in icons. Inspired by this post on /r/Windows10.

Looking good! You could reduce the lag it takes when hovering over, though.

Agreed. I'd sort of just thrown that together at the time, so it's not surprising that some fine-tuning is needed. I guess I should note that the slowness isn't lag, but a fading animation that...perhaps plays a bit too slowly.

I appreciate the feedback, and I'll be sure to keep this thread updated when stuff happens.

Windows 7 doesn't seem to calculate a dominant color or whatever, but rather pick a color from the bottom part of the taskbar icon...?

Really? Huh...my understanding was that it did pull the dominant colour from the icon...at the very least, Windows Media Player proves that it isn't taken straight from the bottom of the icon, specifically - the bottom of that icon is blue, yet the glow is orange, like the ring around the center of the icon.

Also more progress on the thing from above:
