One thing you should always do when hacking SM64DS is making backups and just generally making sure everything you put into your hack also exists on the device you use for hacking SM64DS. So unless a custom asset (model, texture, minimap etc.) goes unused, never delete it.
Export XMLs of all your custom courses. And most importantly, always have a clean, unpatched ROM ready.
A course you're working on, might corrupt, but while working on one course, another one might corrupt too, to a point where you can no longer edit it in SM64DSe. If you have every asset backed-up, all you need to do, is import your assets and XMLs into a clean ROM and you're good to go again. This takes mere minutes, as opposed to starting all over again.

TIP: if a ROM corrupts, don't immediately delete it. Most custom assets are probably still intact, meaning you can extract them from your corrupted ROM and import them into your new ROM using Extract (Raw) and Replace (Raw).

I can't view them now as I'm on my 3DS (whose potato browser throws an SSL exception error, how come no one has made a Luma patch to support newer certificates), but tomorrow I'll view them on my laptop and give my opinion. Anyway, welcome back to Kuribo64, ShaneMGD. Have a waffle.

EDIT: I've seen the screenshots. Looks really good. I especially like the one with the disco-wireframe look. Reminds me of this course in a SMW hack called New Super Mario World 1: The Twelve Magic Orbs Powered-Up, Flashing Colors.

we have a channel with a "bot" that basically notifies every time a new post/thread is created, perhaps something similar could be done in the SM64DS Hacking Server, if they want that is.
pants64 had the same idea about the Discord.

Oh and BTW, there is activity on NSMBHD, me PM'ing another user whose hack I'm working on with level design. He's regularly PM'ing me updates about the levels he works on (World 1 isn't finished yet, so according to the board's rules, he's not allowed to post a hack thread yet).

I, Staryu Trek, present to you...
Hax Bros!

This is a medium-hard, one-world episode of SMBX for TheXTech - NOTE: it is incompatible with legacy SMBX; use TheXTech instead.

Here's the download - no one will download this, but hey, who cares!
/get.php?id=hJPMAsWtLHGLOOrP

And, of course, SCREENSHOTZ! Or, actually, no. Because Arisotura is a dick mindful of ban-dwidth, all BMPs (the file format Luma uses for screenies - screw you in every private part for that, Luma) get vandalized and I can't post them, so you know what, JUST PLAY IT and see for yourself!

Oh yeah, and do read the readme. That's what readmes are for, y'know. For... reading. Yeah.

UPDATE 1/21/2025: With the new update of TheXTech, Hax Bros. is now getting updated too! v2.0.0 will look nice with the newly-added stereoscopic 3D in the 3DS version (in v1.0.0, made before TheXTech supported stereo 3D, the SMW bridges in Treetop Bridgeway didn't look quite nice -_-), and the levels will be larger and since the 3DS version now has widescreen, some changes will probably be made to one-screen sections. Plus, when v2.0.0 releases, I will finally add screenshots to this thread! :D

UPDATE 5/2/2025: A new level will take Kuribo Cavern's place. v1.0.0's KC wasn't well-executed, so for v2.0.0 I decided to entirely remake the level, with three paths before and three after the checkpoint, based on which shoe you choose, allowing for illinearity and replayability. But alas, I went a bit too overboard and the level became so big it crashed TheXTech (the new crash screen is kinda creepy BTW lol) upon opening the .lvlx. So KC got scrapped, which sux, as I loved how it was going to turn out so much... a new level will take its place as level A.

Yay! I'll check out the trailer in a minute and when you, birthday boy ShaneMGD release SM:JL later this year (hopefully. You never know. Bugs may still delay the release ;) ), I will download it and play it on my 3DS! And yeah, pants64 is really helpful - I PM him regularly about code hack ideas (even though I can't code yet, but I do already sorta-kinda understand the syntax of ASM, don't know if that's a beginning but lol :P ) and progress of my hack, and he gives advice - and he recommended The Koopa who Stole Christmas to me. Very good hack. You worked on it too, and IIRC your course was the only one with baby penguins where you could yeet the baby penguins off the cliff ^_^.
Good luck with the last few things that need to be done, and happy birthday!

Unfortunately, I do not have Discord, as I'd rather stay loyal to the boards (Discord has taken away a lot of board activity, like kikilxve, who used to be a very active user until about two months? ago, when he registered on Discord). Might change in a few... years... but you can always PM me here. I tend to be active here daily, so I can quickly respond! We can chat about the development of our hacks and other things!

The SM64DS hack The Koopa who Stole Christmas, also a big community project, is a pretty recent (2023) successful community modding project. Granted, the SM64DS hacking scene was already advanced in '23, while the SMG hacking scene had just kicked off in the early '10s.

How did I write this with a now-borked touchscreen?

Bored and kinda longing back for those good ol' days of art sharing and shitposting with Xero and kikilxve, so I'll just post my 3DS's HOME Menu here.
[thumbnail]

My HOME Menu.

A handful of custom HOME Menu themes (I haven't gotten around to making any myself yet) is on shuffle on my 3DS; this is a NSMBDS theme I got from Anemone3DS. Most of my homebrew (including Anemone) is in its own folder: the one with the Vaporeon badge on it. MCU Bricker is too much fun to shove away in a folder. A folder I open every time I'm on the HOME Menu, but still. The folder with the Eevee badge has official Eevee(lution) badges, Pokémon Shuffle (from the eShop, R.I.P.) and Pokémon Red (with a MissingNo. as my ace poke. I'm called ..G.G.G in the game, but don't give me that look - I needed a weird name like that to Old Man Glitch myself a MissingNo. Also, never thought I'd ever be desperately grinding for a PIKACHU! Out of all Pokémon). The folder with the 8-bit WAHOO badge has an 'artwork' of retro Mario badges from the ole Badge Arcade. Might add some custom ones to it for shits and giggles. I'll discuss the folder with the beta Florges badge on it shortly, but first, we need to talk about custom badges, because I got all of my custom badges (three) together for one big jamboree. Beta Florges, beta Servine and beta Serperior. Any pattern you might notice, is purely coincidental. Then there's an unofficial 3DS port of SM64, downloaded after watching too much UncommentatedPannen, a Super Mario Star Road port with a chocolate camera that somehow manages to be even jankier than the vanilla one, but at least I have fun BLJing. Below that is a very old SM3DL demo from before it even got its name, so they just gave it the placeholder name "Super Mario". Mario's moveset was also slightly different. Then we have Super Mario Land and Fairune 2, not much to say about those, but they are fun.

[thumbnail]

Haxxxxx

The folder with the beta Florges badge on it is a folder for my ROM hacks. I have Another Super Mario 3D, Super Mario: The New Beginning and The Koopa who Stole Christmas.

You don't see a lot of SM64DS hacks get talked about nearly as much as you do the N64 version of the game. It's honestly a shame, because the DS version does open up some pretty cool things, namely the addition of an entire touch screen.
True. Everyone in the SM64DS hacking scene totally wuvs MOM (More Objects Mod)'s Launch Stars (I don't hate them, though), but I'd find Pull Stars cool if they were to ever get implemented in SM64DS. You could trigger them with the touchscreen.
I feel like, if the game were to ever get vigorously ripped apart in the ways that the N64 version of the game has been, it could allow for a lot of cool possibilities. Though, I have little to no faith in ever getting enough interest for anything like that ever happening, given the native PC port of SM64 that makes it easy to replicate all the features the DS version of the game has to offer.
A SM64DS decomp might just become a thing. There are people out there who know a lot about SM64DS's code, like HayashiSTL, who even gets jokingly compared to pannenkoek2012 sometimes. She's currently busy working on SM256 and her own game, though.
But yeah, the PC port, there's a mod (I forgot the name. SM64 Remix? Super Remix?) that added a lot of SM64DS features and Waluigi and the Rainbow Star.
I do see a lot of appeal in the concept of running the game on a DS natively, though. Though, I'm also not entirely sure how THAT works. I'm not too smart on DS stuff.
I don't fully understand you here. Do you mean having the OG SM64 run natively on DS? SM64 is only ~8 MB, and the largest DS ROMs I've seen, are 256 MB, so it could probably be ported, but given the SM64DS models are actually lower-poly than the N64 version's, I don't know if such a homebrew port of SM64 would run without graphical glitches (polygons not rendering). And could texture filtering like on N64 be emulated on DS?

That's already possible, with flashcarts, like R4. Those are cartridges you can insert an SD card into, so the DS can run them natively. Nds-bootstrap on modded 3DS also allows DS ROMs to be run natively (not emulated) on the 3DS's built-in DS hardware, without the need for a flashcart.

Kind of a bump, but I saw the OP lurked in this thread, so I'll post this information.

I was correct about being able to edit the 2D graphics in NSMBe. There is a tutorial on YouTube (by Shugabrush IIRC) on how to create custom icons for SM64DS. SM64DSe itself cannot open or edit these 2D graphics. Note that the logo is a whole nother story: it's in an overlay which you need to decompress, check Gota7's tutorial on custom title screens (misleading title; it's only about custom logos) on YouTube for that. But editing 2D graphics (like HUD/minimap ones) in NSMBe is a piece of cake!
