Good idea going with Arch Linux :)

I imagine GNOME would look really nice on that retina display.

Not a great solution, but it will compile if you add -fpermissive to the CXXFLAGS variable in the Makefile generated by qmake.

How about some keyboards shortcuts?

Ctrl is useful when editing text as it allows you to work with entire words at once, like ctrl+backspace will delete until the beginning of the word at the cursor and ctrl+delete will do the opposite. You can also use ctrl+left/right to go back/forward a word. Ctrl+Home/End goes to the beginning or end of the document and ctrl+up/down work like Home/End (at least in some applications).

In Windows, if you press Windows + the number corresponding to the pinned application in your taskbar, you can open that application or minimize/restore it if it's already open. Windows+X opens a menu with a lot of convenient options and Windows+T gives keyboard focus to the taskbar.

Those little underlines under items in applications' menubars are for quickly accessing the items with the Alt key. Just hold down Alt, press the underlined letter on the item you want, then press the letter for the menu item and boom. For example I can open the server list in HexChat by simply pressing Alt+xs.

(late replies, yay)

I use Vim, a pretty old and complicated text editor that's quite different from the way you edit in most other text editors, though you can be really fast and efficient with it once you learn how to use it.

Vim uses several different 'modes' when editing text -- by default you're in normal mode where you can enter commands to change the text or move around, like h/j/k/l to move left/down/up/right in the text, i to insert some text o to create a new line. When using a command that inserts text you'll go to insert mode, where the keyboard acts mostly like a regular text editor, and when you're done you can go back to normal mnode to quickly move around in the file, or repeat yor last action, or record a macro to speed up some repetitive task, etc.

Vim is really flexible and can basically be configured to do whatever kind of text editing you want, be it nice support for your favorite programming language, even more commands to jump around in your files or maybe even playing Tetris.

I think this video of a plugin for controlling Vim with your voice is a good example of just how detailed and powerful the different commands in Vim can be (though of course normally you'd be typing a few letters on the keyboard and not talking to it :P )

Tested some more games:
  • Tetris DS: Playable with some missing graphics
    [thumbnail]
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky -- Playable, missing textbox borders and HUD elements, can't save
    [thumbnail]
  • Pokémon SoulSilver -- Some of the intro works, crashes on the title screen. Same with Pokémon Platinum

How do you even compile? It's not like C# where there's a solution file that you open in visual studio.

sorry for being stupid

There isn't really an easy way to build it right now unless you feel like installing Code::Blocks, you can try this build of this revision (I cross compiled it from Linux, hope it actually works on Windows...).

To use it, extract the tarball somewhere, then create a directory in the same directory as melonDS called roms/ and put the game you want to try in there as sm64ds.nds. Obtain the DS firmware/BIOS and put that in the same directory as melonDS.exe too.

The structure should look like:
.
├── bios7.bin
├── bios9.bin
├── firmware.bin
├── libgcc_s_seh-1.dll
├── libstdc++-6.dll
├── libwinpthread-1.dll
├── melonDS.exe
└── rom
└── sm64ds.nds

You could use SDL, it takes care of stuff like creating windows and handling input for you. It'll also let you use OpenGL if you want.

I'd have to vote for Half-Life 3, it would be amazing if I could play that on my Wii!

I host my stuff on DigitalOcean (and Kuribo64 is also hosted there), the pricing is nice and it has been quite reliable so far.

Of course it's only really an option if you're okay with managing and setting up the server yourself.

I've been here from the start, I'm guessing Arisotura mentioned it on IRC or something when the board became public.

Higan is quite the feat, of course it requires a very nice PC to run all games, but you can play 100% of the SNES library without issues.
