sorry  I tried to keep the crypto functions compatible (because apparently mcrypt is a dinosaur and is getting deprecated) but failed, so, well

seems like when i try to set it for this post it just uses my default pfp ____________________ who would come back from inactivity out of nowhere just to edit their signature? yeah, likely story. |

looking back on it, the blank entries were caused by the weird way I implemented the "insert entry if new avatar, update if existing" mechanism. why didn't I just use a typical INSERT/ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE is beyond me, but oh well.
basically what it does is create a blank moodavatars entry when uploading a new avatar, so that later the code can populate the new avatar data with an UPDATE query regardless of whether it's a new avatar or an existing one being modified. of course it takes care to remove the blank entry in the case uploading the new avatar failed, but in that particular case, the upload function was just completely shitting itself from trying to call nonexistant GD functions, hence the blank entry sticking around.
