They finally did it. Windows as a service my ass. To summarize, after 2020 Windows 7 Updates will now need to be paid for, straight from the horse's mouth. Speak your thoughts.

If you do now want to upgrade, you’ll run into two pain points: Windows 8 is no longer officially for sale and Windows 10 is no longer a free upgrade, with prices for the latter starting at $139 for an online download.

end of the line, microsoft. feels like they've ran out of ideas to make money.

the one thing I'm looking forward to is, some users aren't gonna take it and either leak the updates somehow or form DIY communities around patching any security issues, the one thing updates are useful for.

updates are fucking pointless outside of that. if your system works, it works. updates aren't making it "better" nor can you reach (or need) perfection.
if you can just patch whatever yourself, you don't have to hand over your computer to a company you can't trust anymore while they make a profit off you.

Last view: 2644 days ago 		It's funny how when it came to XP they extended free support until 2014, but for 7 you have to pay after 10 years. Also this only applies to Enterprise and Business users, so Home users are fucked.

As Thierry said, people are going to leak the updates. Like how POSReady trick works on WXP, and installed Server 2008 updates will work on Vista. Very likely it is the same updates as those for Server 2008 R2 that will carry on for a while, so yeah

Apparently I think the monthly Windows 7 applies only to the professional version.

On the flipside, given Windows 7 is still used by almost 40% of computers globally (source), I suspect many users would have expected Microsoft to recognise the platform’s ongoing importance and extend support voluntarily without charge.

Worse still, as it stands, Microsoft is currently only making this offer to Windows 7 Professional customers in Volume Licensing. Some small businesses may qualify, but the vast majority of everyday consumers (most of whom are running Windows 7 Home) will not.

I thought so that I can just pirate the updates instead of forking my money over over this clear scam.

I really hope this plan falls flat or that the backlash against it will make Microsoft think twice about placing users into a sinking ship and they can't access lifeboats without having to pay to unlock those doors.

I looked this up and it's for enterprise and professional users only. Once support ends in 2020 for regular Windows 7 users, that's it. If you're enterprise or professional, then after 2020, through at least 2023, you'd have to pay, similar to what you can do with Windows XP if you need updates for that.

Allow me to clear up some confusion regarding this, and very sorry for the huge bump, but some new info has since come out regarding the paid Windows 7 support. Paid Windows 7 support is only available for the business and education(?) sector. The home and ultimate editions are not included, however, someone found a way to download Microsoft's test update on these machines. This test update can only be installed on machines capable of paid extended support. If you try to install it on an unsupported machine, it won't install. Enabling the hack allows it to, however, no one is certain if this will work come February. These patches cannot be slipstreamed into an ISO file either.

Windows 10 is still available for free as long as your Windows 7/8.1 copy is genuine. Check either Windows Update or download and burn an ISO to get started, however, at this stage, you'd be better off getting a new computer with fresh hardware. This ensures you get the latest and greatest speed improvements.

Hope this clears up any confusion.
