We can send people to the moon, we have nuclear energy, yet we can't even control a small hurricane or tornado. Even if we completely reverse climate change there would still be dangerous storms. |

Posted by Belsaw I'm not surprised, and it's a bit naive to label these weather storms as "small", assuming we're talking about the level most people assume when they hear the word "tornado" or "hurricane". Do you know how strong these winds are? Hurricanes are extremely huge, stretching for many miles, visible from space, and their storm surge can do lots of flooding and devastation, think tsunamis but smaller and coupled with really high wind speeds. Tornadoes, on the other hand, especially EF5 ones, have winds so powerful, they can rip homes from their foundations and send huge tanks and trucks (unless your tank is the TIV-2) flying across the air. They're essentially very concentrated hurricanes. They can also be very huge. Unlike funnel-shaped tornadoes that we're familiar with, wedge-shaped tornadoes can stretch for a mile wide. Though the classification for the tornado is based on the damage done rather than their size and speed, since it's a bit pointless to call a huge, wide tornado that doesn't do any property damage a valid threat. They're not small storm systems at all. It's easier to explore ocean trenches and moon surfaces than to deal with these things. |

Well by small, I meant storms the length and width of something like jumbo jet. The most progress we've achieved is creating tiny storms in jars at laboratories. We're far behind and who knows what 2018 will be like in terms of bad weather.
Also what happened to Jose? I haven't checked recently but last I remember it was headed for Boston and possibly New York, Portland. |
