Well, its funny. I hear about how its hotter and hotter every month in the media. That each month, the temperature keeps on rising. But when I look at the data from multiple scientific organizations, they say the temperature has not risen in over 17 years. Which, is supported by their data. I think the IPCC has blown it way out of proportion (as well as the media) and it does not feel any hotter that it did 10 years ago. They are lying to us and do you know how I can tell? Its not called global warming anymore, instead, its put under the label of climate change. And the climate is always changing and it always has been.
So I am in favor of the Dakota access pipeline and the Keystone pipeline because I think that coal, oil, and gas are the way to go for the future as we learn how to effectively introduce practical renewable energy in substitution for fossil fuels. Anyway, you guys might think I hate the planet, but just because I don't believe in global warming, doesn't mean I want it to shrivel up and all that. ____________________ Remember, every user has to start out somewhere,- Every time I look back at my old posts, I cringe. |

you must be trolling.
"coal, oil, and gas are the way to go for the future" ahahahahahahahahahahahah those are called fossil fuels for a reason. they'll run out eventually. which will be preceeded by continual price rises. also, the DAPL shit isn't just about transporting oil. the protesters are called "water protectors", because they want their water to stay clean. imagine if the pipeline leaked or anything... in any case, I value clear water more than oil. either way, there IS climate change. in the place I have always lived, when I was a kid, we'd get snowy Winters and hot Summers. then at some point it changed and we get barely any snow and shitty Summers. more seriously, the climate change is more obvious in USA where they get more storms and shit. it's also said that the ice banks hold a lot of methane, and if it was released due to melting, it would make global warming even faster. as for the "but the climate has always changed" argument, look at this. Posted by LeftyGreenMario trying is still better than not doing anything. "we've fucked it up, it's too late" sounds like another form of climate change denying, being an excuse for doing nothing ____________________ NSMBHD - Kafuka - Jul melonDS the most fruity DS emulator there is zafkflzdasd |

@Paperplateismguy
Are scientists lying about everything then? Is it all a conspiracy? Why don't you stop using anything that has come to be because of modern science? Why don't you stop believing that you are made of atoms because it MUST be a conspiracy to hide the "fact" that everyone is made of fairy dust? Or how about you stop taking everything shitty tabloids like Fox "News" say for granted and read some actual scientific material? |

I believe in global warming. And even if it is too late, we don't just stop fighting it. Just because you're going to crash, doesn't mean you don't press the brakes to reduce the impact. ____________________ |

Posted by PaperplateismGuy Overwhelming scientific consensus (over 95% of scientists) states that climate change is real and caused by humans. Not sure where you're getting your information from. Yes, the climate has always been changing, but the significant degree to which it is right now is not natural. Arguing that it's not happening because it "does not feel any hotter" is a dumb anecdotal argument; and "they changed the name from global warming to climate change" is a ridiculous myth: both terms have been used for the same amount of time, and "climate change" is more common in scientific literature. Even if climate change wasn't real, it's nonsensical to call fossil fuels the way of the future. Burning them still causes harmful pollution to the air and water, extracting them causes collateral environmental damage (like leaking pipelines, and earthquakes and water poisoning from fracking), and our efforts to pursue them have led to countless destructive wars in the Middle East. |

Users here have stated some points and I agree with them. But I have more to add. We're not talking about monthly temperatures. We're talking about global averages. Data ranging from tree rings, oceanic CO2 levels, arctic and antarctic land ice amount, and how every recent year happens to be the hottest on average. IPCC did not blow it out of proportion. I'd even like to think they used cautious language and conservative estimates. A whopping 97% (or at least around 90%-100%) of scientists, especially those that are exercised in that field such as climatologists, are part of the consensus that involves at least one study on 12,000 peer-reviewed and valid climate papers. James Powell examined 13,950 abstracts and found only 24 to reject global warming. Meanwhile, all those "dissenters" are usually not backed in science, grossly misrepresent data (like cherry-picking), outright lie, and are paid by oil industry firms. They don't do any actual research of their own. Because if they did, it would undermine their positions. They can't just go against the consensus if they want to be right: they have to have good reasoning and actual high quality data that supports their positions. It's the contrarians that lie and mislead the public, and the media sometimes casts them as if they're valid figures (like Fox News, surprise surprise). We have pretty much the entire Republican Party opposing this mainly because they don't understand it and they're pro-business. It's sad that we do have what most Europeans would call "fringe-right" as a major right-wing party. Democrats aren't really better, though, but the Republicans make them look good in comparison. The media doesn't even care about global warming, at least not as much as the scientists that repeatedly publish papers about global warming's dire consequences. Posted by StapleButter Posted by Green Toad Of course. But I had to point out the inevitability of global warming at this point. No, it's happening right now. We are feeling its effects right now, with the poverty stricken regions bearing the heaviest brunt of it. Terrorism might be even linked to it. It's only going to get worse in the future. We still should take action into at least attempting to reduce it for humanity's sake. I try my best to refuse to vote for any politician that denies global warming and I rank global warming as a top priority, even over our economy. I am striving to eat less meat, drive a hybrid in the future, live in a small house, recycle, and hopefully reduce. But the contrarians won't accept it until they see, like, their house submerged in 20 feet of water and watch their backyard be literally transformed into a desert. |

Ceasing all CO2 emissions would atleast stop the CO2 rate from growing.
Coupled with programs to plant vegetation as much as possible, the CO2 rate would go down, returning the planet to normal climate. Doing it too much could cause the opposite effect though, where the Earth gets too cold. It needs to be carefully engineered to reach the right equilibrium. ____________________ NSMBHD - Kafuka - Jul melonDS the most fruity DS emulator there is zafkflzdasd |

I think the CO2 rate would just slow down very gradually. We were active in phasing out chlorofluorocarbons pretty quickly (U.S. delayed though until September 2007) once we discovered the ozone hole it was contributing to, and the remnants haven't 100% been gone, sticking around for a while.
We can try to plant vegetation, but it would be important to sustain biodiversity. We do have more forests than we did a few decades ago, but biodiversity has been decreased. |

Yeah, but the ozone layer is reforming itself.
You know, things may look grim, but there's one positive thing. We know. Knowledge is power. Imagine the mess we'd end up into if we didn't know, and blindly continued all destructive activities, including producing CFC's and releasing them. Now, our enemy is the capitalist system. Once that enemy is taken down, we can work towards building a sustainable future. ____________________ NSMBHD - Kafuka - Jul melonDS the most fruity DS emulator there is zafkflzdasd |

Yeah, I imagine it would've been way worse. The hole extending to beyond the southern tip of South America and more animals (including people) getting those lovely UV rays.
Critical thinking should be emphasized in every class. If everyone had critical thinking skills, the media would have to rethink how they would cast their news, fundamentalists won't ever get intelligent design taught as science in schools, alt-medicine would be dead, and the Republican Party would be disintegrated. But that's not the case so that's we have U.S. stalling when it comes to global warming action. Posted by StapleButter Well, I'm not totally for overthrowing the capitalist system, but it really needs a huge overhaul. For starters, actual scientists need to be deciding on science-related policy issues like global warming and getting rid of NCCIH. Still, we need more protests like Occupy Wall Street, but more organized. |

the schools are the way they are by design. they serve to ensure the kids stay well within the system as they grow. the kids are taught that questioning the authority is bad, no matter how valid your points are. well, glad I'm not living in Ohio. my goldfish enjoys getting drunk on Saturday nights.
anyway, what's more amusing is that the USA government is visibly afraid of the events. how else would you explain the massive censorship and over-armed police? they know that the foundations of their system are cracking. they're trying hard to hide that fact, but... it won't last. ____________________ NSMBHD - Kafuka - Jul melonDS the most fruity DS emulator there is zafkflzdasd |

Sorry about that rant earlier. A better thing for me to say would be: the burden of proof is on you. There is massive evidence that man-made global warming is a fact, and very little that it is made up. |

Regardless of global warming, I don't think letting so many diesel cars roam around is a good idea. Not saying that gasoline is clean, but diesel is the worst offender.
Have you ever been to a gas station? The pistol for diesel is always full of crap, the others are reasonably clean. That being said, modern trucks and buses get the BlueTec technology, which is said to destroy most of the pollution caused by diesel engines. Have you ever seen buildings next to high-traffic roads? They turn black. It's not some fancy magic. It's pollution. Sea levels rising and climate going apeshit in USA (more storms etc) aren't random changes either. ____________________ NSMBHD - Kafuka - Jul melonDS the most fruity DS emulator there is zafkflzdasd |

Posted by StapleButter Yes, it is obvious over here. Weather has been crazy over here the past few years. Here are the past five summarized: 2011: Extreme snowstorm hits eastern coast in February Largest outbreak of tornados ever recorded (25-28 April) Unusually warm summer across much of the country Winter 2011-2012 was one of the warmest winters ever recorded in the USA 2012: Drought becomes noticeable in California Massive heatwave in June and July breaking many temperature records USA's hottest year on record when temperatures are averaged across the entire country Winter 2012-2013 is mostly normal, but starts late and very abruptly. Also ends very suddenly. 2013: Snowstorm in the first week of MAY causes as much as 45cm of snow to fall in some areas (very rare outside of mountains here for those who don't know) Very quiet tornado season Very quiet hurricane season California drought continues Winter 2013-2014 was one of the coldest and snowiest in modern history in the eastern half of the country, and one of the warmest and driest in modern history in the western half of the country. 2014: Even quieter tornado season Even quieter hurricane season Very cool summer in the eastern half of the country, very hot and dry in the western half California drought continues, State of California's warmest year on record across the state Winter 2014-2015 was very similar to 2013-2014, but with slightly less snow and slightly more extreme cold, with the exception of December which was extremely warm and dry across most of the country, breaking many temperature records. 2015: Summer tornado season was initially very quiet but suddenly became very intense Hurricane season was initially very quiet but suddenly became very intense, eventually leading to Hurricane Patricia, second-strongest tropical cyclone ever, destroying the western coast of Mexico California drought continues, although improving slightly Winter 2015-2016 was extremely warm and dry, though not as much as 2011-2012, with the exception of one MASSIVE snowstorm in late January that resulted in as much as 60cm of snow falling in some areas, then melting within days. 2016: Extremely unusual tornado outbreak in February in the southeast part of the country Massive rainstorms in Northern California in March, but doesn't have much effect on the drought Very hot summer, in fact it is 34C (93F) outside now right as I type this...two days before the official start of autumn Slightly quieter than usual tornado season overall with the exception of February...which isn't even part of the normal season California drought improving slightly but still very severe Hurricane season started off quietly but suddenly became very active in the past month To be continued... |
