It's cause the military is secular, they do not want a unique religion (at least in turkey and egypt), which makes them more reasonable and overall a better government, and it is also much more cooperative with other nations this way. |

religion + politics usually ends in disaster
even though I'm religious I will admit it's better to keep religion and politics separated, it really causes drama if choices are influenced by religion |

Posted by Degolegodyl iirc the military forced an islamic party out of power in 1997. Though unfortunately this just delays the problem and makes it bigger, oppressing people doesn't make it better. The problem is education. ____________________

that sucks @turkey and good luck to anyone who's still living there
Posted by xkitten not like it'd be any different from the way western politics are now you'd still have a bunch of morons screeching about how everyone who disagrees with them is literally worse than hitler and stalin's lovechild |

Posted by MercuryPenny You can't compare western countries to the middle east. All these countries are is a bunch of fake democracies and dictatorships. Not only that but people are repressed and forced to follow a view of a religion they do not support and the population has no freedom at all. In western countries people have a bunch of rights, governments are democratic and somewhat follow the public's needs. Just because you do not agree with the candidates proposed in these elections, it doesn't mean that the rest of the population doesn't like them. They won for a reason. In third world countries people do not have the luxury of picking their representative, and many people are repressed for voicing their opinions, such as iran, saudi arabia and a bunch of other countries in the region, turkey included. Meanwhile, in the US and Canada everyone has equal rights. You might be talking about politicians not getting anything past congress. Well, since it is a democracy, they have to argue and decide if a certain decision is the right one. In non-democratic societies, these things don't happen because the government can just implement whatever they want without any backlash. |

Posted by Degolegodyl I will point out that elections in the US aren't necessarily democratic. Unlike most other Western countries, we use electronic voting machines that are easily susceptible to rigging. I've been researching and documenting this for quite a while, and written some blog posts about it. Your main point, though, is quite valid. |

Yeah, I was not aware of that. I also want to bring the point that before general elections, Democrats have "super delegates", people whose vote is worth more than any other person. So Hillary Clinton got the super delegates on her side and won by a big margin, while Bernie Sanders had about the same amount of the popular vote. |

i agree with p much everything you said, but that's not what i meant
what i meant was a western-based republic with officials basing their actions on whatever religion they have would cause just as much contention as anything else in politics i.e i'm a moron who can't read sorry about that also Posted by Degolegodyl Posted by Degolegodyl :^) |

Posted by Degolegodyl Not exactly. In terms of the United States, this "population" means in terms of states, not individuals. On an individual level, if you vote against your state, your vote means exactly zero. Not rounded down, exactly zero. The graphic below shows exactly what I mean. |

Posted by LeftyGreenMario For presidential elections, yeah, but almost all other elections (senator, representative, state and local officials) are by popular vote. Of course, the elections themselves may be unfair (as I told Dego). |

It's a derp system when they could do it the simple way and simply count one persons ballot instead of basing it on states. There isn't need for those dumb delegates that just over-complicate things.
It's like bloated code, just slowing the system down and making it annoying to use. |

Yeah that is pretty stupid, depending on where you live, your vote can count as 0 if you live in a state that does not follow your same ideology.
Posted by MercuryPenny Oh now i see what you're saying. Well, you're right, but remember that religion isn't just another dividing factor. For some, religion is life, and in these extremes, which seem to be very common nowadays, which makes for a terrible, non-secular environment which most countries (and the military of Turkey) want to avoid. Also, the failed Military coup could be bad PR for Erdogan, since it makes him look like he's losing control of the country, and that the military is not backing him, which might make him weak in situations of war against terrorism. |

either that, or possibly report him? I dunno. |

report him as far as possible.
if nothing gets done, go wherever he advertises his shit and publicly shoot him down. If any mod gets mad at you, explain them the situation. also, that sounds bad. kind of sounds like "oh noes, this user is too much trouble to deal with, we'd rather let him do his shit unencumbered". which is no way to moderate a community. never give in to a difficult user. ____________________ NSMBHD - Kafuka - Jul melonDS the most fruity DS emulator there is zafkflzdasd |
