Well for now, I'm laying the bases out. Went with C++ and Qt, but might switch back to C# (QtCreator is derp, and getting Qt to work with VS is probably a pain).

The upcoming NSMB2 editor will likely be similar to Reggie! in functionality, interface, whatnot. First versions will operate on raw files (.3ds or .cia), further versions may also work on individual game files à la Reggie!. Reason is that for now, given the lack of a 3DS Riivolution-like, this will be the easiest way to test levels. (and honestly with how much of a pain it is to make a Riivo-like, it's better off as a part of a CFW, like in the NTR CFW)

It's also not based on any Reggie! fork, it's something fresh instead. Source code!

but I don't have a Gateway

Ninjhax can be used to launch CFWs or whatever that can run unsigned CIA files. Or maybe Citra can run NSMB2. Rest assured that there is a way out of this shit. Maybe it's not convenient for you, but there's a way out.

why not merge efforts with Reggie! NSMB2 or whatever it's called

I don't think Python is the right language for building this kind of project. Otherwise I'd gladly join forces. I also want to have some fun, too! We haven't been writing new level editors in ages nowadays.

.3ds? CIA? Gateway? but that's working in favor of piracy

Quite honestly, with how fucked up the 3DS scene is, I don't really care about piracy. Not like this project would have an impact on piracy or overall cause Nintendo to go bankrupt.

And even if a 3DS Riivo-like existed, you still couldn't prevent piracy. On the Wii, it's convenient because you just have to require the original disc (although you can use a modchip and a burned disc, but that's more involved than what the average pirate can afford). But on the 3DS, there's no point when you have things like Gateway or ability to install any title to the system by converting it to a CIA. Bascially, any efforts at preventing piracy are futile.

I'm not in favor of piracy, I just keep my time and energy for what makes sense.

I have butterflies stuck in my nose

Grab a tissue and blow real hard. If not enough, go to the Kuribo64 Hospital.

whatever else

Just post. The thread is here to collect opinions, thoughts, whatnot, that could affect the editor's building and make it the most awesome software of 2015 2016. We want to hear you!

Being new to the world of 3DS homebrew/hacking, I'm gonna need some noob tutorials without the jargon- but I would be very interested in playing around with NSMB2. I'm almost done with NSMB anyway, might as well start moving on.

So you're saying that you can run cias, and therefore rom hacks with iron/tubehax, or can you only do that with ninjhax?

Anyways, nsmb2 hacks sounds pretty cool!

I don't know what the latest advances are in the domain of installing/running CIAs. You are encouraged to do your own research.

Alright, I think I've accumulated a decent understanding of CIA's and CFW's and all that jazz. Now I've got to find a CFW that's compatible with Ironhax and the latest 3DS firmware.

Would it be wise to convert a NSMB2 ROM to CIA for modding purposes?

If you're going to use it as that, sure.

I plan to make the editor take both file types, though.

Speaking of CIA Support, will this Editor support both types of CIA (Retail and Dev)?
Both are very slightly different, though.

I don't think it matters-- the editor will basically be locating the CXI inside the CIA or .3ds, finding its RomFS, and editing that.

after slowness and shit, the editor is finally doing something...

well for now, merely reading a few bytes out of a SARC file, to ensure the file I/O system works right

ain't it beautiful

still looks a bit crapo due to the margins around tiles, and lack of alpha support, but atleast I got that goddamn ETC1 shit working

Well aware. I made another attempt with quick alpha support and it looks much better.

Glad to see that this editor is getting somewhere. Do you have any names planned for this editor-in-progress?

planned UI mockup (click for fullsize version)

tabs to the left are:
* objects: what you see, Reggie-style object selector
* sprites: add/remove sprites, properties for the selected sprite (sprite type, position, nice settings, raw settings)
* entrances: basically the same shit
* whatever can fit there

Any comments about all that?

(also sorry, not much to show these times, I'm mostly working on giving it a proper code structure, nothing visual but it makes the code a lot easier to deal with)

Hm, looks good. I assume those arrows under 'whatever menus' are undo/redo buttons?

Yup.

(will have to think of a good method for doing that though)
