The original idea of advertisement is legit, but this shit is really going too far. Especially when the ads are being forced down your throat.

You know, there are those adblock browser extensions, so you can browse sites without them being full of ads, and you can actually read the site's content (or click the right Download button without clicking an ad that decided to mimic one).

Thing is, it's possible to detect that an ad blocker is being used. Some sites (like z0r.de) show a placeholder with a little message where the ad is supposed to appear. Okay, nothing terribly bad.

But there are sites that go as far as outright forbidding access unless you turn your adblocker off.

This is going too far. It's like you're walking in the street, and suddenly there's one of those big ad panels. You don't care about it, you walk past it... but a cop appears, stops you, and forces you to watch the panel for 20 seconds.

What's next? Forcing you to buy whatever crap is advertised?

Whoever does that shit needs to die a painful, ad-filled death.

Then come those ads integrated to video players. If well done (ie. integrated into a Flash-based player), no adblocker can block that shit.

One site I went to went as far as trolling viewers about the ad. You know, generally they have a 'skip ad in X seconds' type button that unlocks itself after 5 seconds or so. On that site, the button's timer was set to a time LONGER than that of the ad, making it worthless.

Not to mention how wasteful all that shit is if you're on a limited connection. While you're enjoying your forced ad, of course, your video doesn't start buffering. Overadvertisement and mobile don't go well at all. Noone wants to waste their precious data on ads they don't care about.

And, seriously, have you ever watched one of those ads and thought "oh I'm going to buy that shit"? All I think is "I DON'T GIVE A SHIT! GET THAT SHIT OUT OF MY FACE AND GIVE ME MY FUCKING VIDEO ALREADY".

Long story short, overadvertising procudes the exact opposite effect of what you're hoping for. By annoying your viewers with forced ads, you ensure they will not come back to your site. Definitely not worth what little $0.83/month you can get out of ads because someone accidentally clicked one. You want money? Get a goddamn job.

Not like real life advertising is any better. Look at how much paper ends up going to the waste every day, from those ads you get in your mailbox and immediately throw away.

Advertising doesn't go well with data saving.
Advertising doesn't go well with ecology.
Advertising doesn't go well with keeping your userbase.
Advertising only goes well with stinky commercial greed.

Just. Stop.

Not only that, when on mobile or a bad connection, the ads BUFFER.
Let's say that you just want to watch a 20 second video, but you can't because an AD isn't loading.

Speaking of mobile, it doesn't help that sometimes ads make the page lag like hell, and they can appear after the page is loaded (if I had a dollar for every time I accidentally went to an ad on mobile...)

I understand that ads help cover website costs, but when there are false downloads and pop-ups, un-tech savvy users can be fooled, and at that point, I don't think it's worth it (for the site owners), even if it is their only source of income.

I definitely agree that today's advertisement system is extremely flawed.

I don't know how ads are supposed to help sites become better. Hell, if Youtube didn't even ALLOW ads on their website, they'd probably be making more money right now. Same with Google, and any other site that has to have advertising to "support" their site, FFS.

And ads CAN cause viruses, and when you see an ad that says "fix your computer", I tell them, "you're funny"

I cannot agree enough with this statement.

When you just say "unblock our ads? <3" when you use adblock or whatever it's fine.

I legitimately wonder why they have advertisements anywhere on the internet when they know you walk away to grab another bag of popcorn when the commercials come up on TV.

Yeah, no problem with that. The real problem is when they outright deny you access until you turn your adblocker off.

You remind me of all those sites that just because you're browing on a phone, show you ads that try to mimic Android app ads, but with shitty Javascript that lags everything.

(and it kinda surprises me that that shit manages to lag our phones when they are getting as powerful as desktop PCs. Shows how fucking inefficient Android is, really)

As I said, if you need money, you get a job. If your only source of income is shitty website ads, you're doing something wrong and you should be ashamed about your life.

Yeah, over advertisement is bad, but i think ads are part of our culture now, and it would be hard to remove them, even if laws were in place, since its the dammed internet :D

But, in another way, I as much as i despise them, ads are beneficial, not to the consumer, but the sites get a lot of revenue from advertisements. Look at facebook, how do you think the company made all that money?

Lets not forget how some websites make you pay loads of money to remove ads for 1 month

or just use adblock if you're not interested in supporting them

Except when they decide to be assholes and go 'turn adblock off or go fuck yourself'.

I'd have no problem with supporting any good site, but a site that tries to shove its ads down my throat can go fuck itself.

Actually, adblock has initiated a program that is named unobtrusive ads. It allows text based ads which aren't annoying, and im ok with them. Even if they seem to not make enough money, they actually help for an extra cash.

However, shit gets real when I face what you say.

They grey out the ENTIRE page with an alert to unblock ABP on the website. Now thats some bullshit there. I rather look elsewhere.

Yeah adblock is also making a browser for android, which has native adblock support, so no ads in that browser. I really want extensions in chrome for android tho, that would be perfect.

I don't mind ads that are either still or animated on the top, bottom, and sides. Popups are some of the most annoying and so are YouTube ads. Really, ads should be limited to non-invasive ads on the margins and nothing else. Maybe a small thing if there's space but that's about it.

Popups seem to have mostly died out since every browser blocks them by default nowadays, though. They were mostly a thing of the 2000s.

The new tab/new window/javascript alert confirm, yeah. But the HTML windows like the you have posted and you gained this much coins notification on here? Not exactly.

And then there are ads that ALWAYS show up before you watch a YouTube video. Man, do I just outright hate them. >_< I'm surprised how YouTube has become a community of video posting to an industry of false ads. Anywhere you try to click on YouTube, there's an ad.

Whoever began the ad era needs to die with their own ads suffocating them while slowly being chopped to pieces.

Also, it's not only for Android that gets those huge ads that cover up the whole page. iOS, and Windows phones get the same treatment too. Just take a look with Inspect Element. :P

The worst ads on phones are not just those that lag your mobile browser, but also the ones that open up the app store. Those are just annoying. >_<

Ad Pop-Ups are now only used at Warez Websites, and I hate the fact, Warez Websites still exist, anyway.
