I mean... an actual interest, desire to take the scene somewhere?

Every once in a while, someone comes in and goes "hey let's revive SMG2.5", motivation lasts one day, and then... it's dead again. SMG2.5 seems to be a zombie.

So, yeah. Who still messes with that game, and if so, what are you guys doing? Just wondering. I stopped caring about SMG ages ago (kinda ironic since I run this board, but eh).

SMG has been dead for a while, mostly when the giant 2.5 died...

Yea, I dont see any interest anymore from anyone in the forum except the occasional "just joined this forum, lets hack!!!" and everyone is like: "eh, nope."

Actually, the cancelling of the original 2.5 seemed to cause a sort of "SMG hacking revival" that lasted a month or two.

I had an idea for a level about a week ago, I might make it. I don't know.

I do know that at one point I made a design for the interior of the rocket in Sky High. I'll try to find it.

While I've always been interested in playing SMG levels made by others, I was never interested in hacking the game myself. I prefer the simplicity of the 2D mario bros series over the complicated and time consuming effort that goes into hacking 3D games, like SMG. To be honest, I'm much more interested in NSMBU hacking than 3DW, even though I made an editor for that game.

I lost my interest into SMG hacking months ago. I don't have good ideas for my galaxies and I'm not happy with the things I do.

Oh well. Probably gonna archive the SMG section.

It has long been determined that SMG is out of the league for random ROM hackers anyway. In the early days, ROM hacking caught on because those early games are all made of 2D graphics and therefore are relatively easy to mod. Nowadays, well, most games are 3D, and the amount of effort put into making games has increased a lot (or well, probably shifted from programming to making quality assets-- older consoles had to be programmed in ASM and required reprogramming the whole game for each new console). Typically, the effort a ROM hacker has to put into making something of quality has increased a lot too.

Archiving it would be a bad move. It essentially means that nobody is allowed to hack SMG again. I, for one, very recently discovered how to hack on Dolphin and I'm on my way to finishing Voluminous Vortex once and for all. It may be dead, but that's no reason to archive it forever as long as that occasional person posts in it.

It's not a corporation, where we have to cut programs that aren't profitable. Keep it around just in case.

Nope. They can always post it in the misc ROM hacking forum, or somewhere else.

Kuribo64 will not have impact on what people can and cannot do. You sound like we'd ban anyone who hacks SMG just because we archived the relevant forums.

This is because I have some ideas about new stuff to do at Kuribo64, adding forums, etc. At the same time, I don't want to end up with a huge forum structure (kinda bloaty and 'derpboard that tries to be about everything'), so I figured I'd archive all the dead cruft.

How about instead of archiving it, you just reduce it to a single forum alongside all the new ones you plan to introduce?

Reducing it to one single forum would lose the current organization. There are many old threads in there, and imo it's better if they stay nicely organized.

I'd really prefer if it wasn't archived.
Do we still have subforums?

I am still doing this stuff. BDL is still catching my interest, so no I am not done with this game for certain.

I can't remember who it was that said this or where it was said, but somebody on this board mentioned that since SMG has higher resolution graphics and whatnot, it naturally holds higher standards for what custom models and objects must look like to be considered "decent looking." Maybe this extra challenge aspect is off-putting to some who have little experience with 3D modelling.

We don't. I'd also avoid reimplementing them, subforums have less visibility.

Probably me.

Not to mention you're also dealing with a full-fledged gravity engine, while most games just apply regular 'fall down' gravity everywhere. And apparently some things like cameras are a pain to work with.

And Youtube continues to be dumb. You can probably get any video shut down for copyright infringement. They don't check shit.

Either way, this has nothing to do with Nintendo or legal action. If Nintendo doesn't like SMG2.5, they should come over here and tell us.

Then how are there subforums in the SMG2.5 archive?

It's a well known fact, that the entire YouTube's Copyright System is fully automated.
In fact, it has never been controlled by flesh and blood.

As for the Trailer, it's probably somebody who tried to Dispute and Appeal the Content ID Match, because once Appealing fails, YouTube will take down your Video, while acting like it was Nintendo's work (but actually isn't).

I know it from experience: Nintendo doesn't care about ROM Hacking, at all.
Remember how I have been a Licensed 3DS and Wii U Developer?
The guys at Nintendo even giggled, when they started talking about ROM Hacking, with us!

Then how are there subforums in the SMG2.5 archive?

There aren't. The per-galaxy forums were all crammed into the per-world forums (there were only like 3 threads in each forum, so eh). The SMG2.5 archive is an alternate forum listing page-- the forums are set up to show up on that page instead of the main one.
