I mean, Super Mario Bros. didn't just sell the NES- it was instumental to the future of video gaming. Super Mario World was a big deal for the SNES, which at the time was being publicly labelled as a gimmick and an exploit of consumers. Super Mario 64 kept the N64 afloat as well, and it pioneered the 3D platformer. New Super Mario Bros. was responsible for single-handedly reviving 2D platformers. Super Mario Galaxy is where motion-controlled gaming and precision platforming really worked for the first time. What did 3D Land do? Or NSMB2? Or NSMBU? Or 3D World? They sold moderately well, but they contributed nothing to the video game industry. You could say that 3D Land saved the plummeting reputation of the 3DS, but that was also in part to Mario Kart 7 releasing at the same time- which is a proven system seller. Since 3D World did nothing for the Wii U while Mario Kart 8 earned it a million sales in two weeks, I'd say that t'was Mario Kart 7 that saved the 3DS. |

there, I've summed up the last few posts also feel free to explain to me how the following games contributed anything: super mario land super mario land 2 super mario sunshine super mario 64 ds you can't expect very high standards from mobile systems, but notice how i added sms on there since it's literally sm64 with a gimmick and no long jump it did nothing special, it gave you a jetpack but other than that it's sm64 on an island |

Notice how I didn't add those game in my list? Because those games didn't contribute anything. I'm not afraid to say that. But you know what? Four games between 89-04 that meant nothing compared to six games between 09-13 that meant nothing- is a big difference. There hasn't been a steady stream of Mario games lately that have had any significant influence, while in the past it has occurred for about every second game. Now I'd like to thank the people who decided to hijack the thread because they like to tell me I'm a dickhead. |

You were saying that they didn't "define" a generation constantly as if it was a bad thing.
Which is odd because I haven't seen anyone talk about the GameCube age that way - the GBA had a total of four remakes and the GameCube had Sunshine, neither of which really "defined" a generation. I'm not sure why it's so much worse now when it wasn't a huge deal then. |

Hey MercuryPenny, mind telling me what makes Super Mario 3D Land, New Super Mario Bros. 2, etc. so interesting? I agree with MarioFanatic, they are boring, standard Mario games.
64 defined a generation in which gaming shifted to 3D, as well as Mario platformers. Sunshine defined a generation in which 3D Mario would take an unexpected twist on a tropical island with a strange new water pack device. A definite shift from Super Mario 64. Galaxy defined a generation in which the platforming genre would be transformed by the addition of gravity, crazy new mechanics, and so much more. --- Now let's see what these new games have to offer... Super Mario 3D Land...defines a generation of.....linearity? Tanooki Suits? I have no idea. The game doesn't have it's own identity. It's just a standard linear 3D Mario platformer. The same can be said for 3D World, what did it add that was new? Cat suits? Multiplayer? Umm sorry, but I prefer the dramatic gameplay twists of Galaxy to this boring stuff. Multiplayer IMO flopped ever since NSMBW, it's nearly impossible to complete a course with four people without somebody getting screwed over and dropping their controller. And for NSMB2...uhh...it defined a generation of coins...? But then again, coins were in the original SMB game, so...back to square one.... |

Super Mario Sunshine and 3D World were about the same to me in terms of personal rating. Yeah, Sunshine was unique visually and it brought new things to the table, but so did 3D World. They were both fun games to play but they both have different styles of gameplay, and I don't think you can say one is definitively better than the other. It's a matter of personal preference. Status: It was really, really fun, guys - thanks for the ride!

NSMBW? They were building on an idea they introduced in the past. The game is just as creative and interesting as SMG1/2 but people continue to blind themselves with shots in the dark about how it's "unoriginal" "not unique" and stuff like that. At least MarioFanatic didn't deliberately say it's all boring, generic and not unique at all - he outright said they're good games. But everyone else who argues against this seems to outright deride the games for a lack of originality, which the game is bursting at the seams with. It doesn't need to "define" a generation - SMS didn't. If you want something that "defines" a generation go look at Mario Kart or something, because everything that series has done has pretty much distinguished one generation of games from another since the SNES.
