Lately, I have become very interested in hacking my Wii with the Homebrew Channel. For the most part, I've been messing with Gecko codes in the Galaxy games, SSBB, and so on.
But when I heard that I could implement custom content into games using Riivolution, I got excited.
Only problem is, I can't find one straight-up tutorial on how to use it for Galaxy 2.
Maybe I'm just searching in the wrong spots of the interwebs. But every time I try to google a tutorial, it's either a tutorial for Brawl or a thread announcing SMG 2.5. I don't want either of these.
I also have no clue what an XML file is, or which one to use.
Could somebody please just tell me what to do to make it work?
(On a side note, if it is important, I want to play these levels. https://www.dropbox.com/s/kewq3rjf9pcv1hp/SMG2.5%20Sunshine%20Levels.zip)
Thanks!

Well, to start off with, do you have an actual disc of SMG2 and/or any other game you might want to play around with?
I'm assuming that you have homebrew installed since you mentioned using gecko codes.
Basically, riivolution is just another program that you can put in your apps folder and run just like anything else, and if you want, in the program you can also install it as a channel. Riivolution basically reads an XML and then does what it says based on the settings you give it. Here's a link to what you should probably use, if you look at the XML while reading this it'll probably make more sense.

So in this particular XML, at the top it has tags for defining options, specifically creating a section in Riivolution called "Super Mario Galaxy 2 Testing", and then it defines several options, SMG2 Main Slot, Flying and Ice Mario patch for using the powerups in your levels should you choose to make any, enabling the debug screen, again, if you're testing something and it crashes, and then several alternate "slots". More on that later. Notice that it defines a patch ID, which is defined below the options.

In said Patch IDs, you might want to remove it but I make a copy of your save on your SD so you don't mess anything up playing with stuff, and then it sets up a bunch of folders on your SD to patch onto the game (like StageData and ObjectData), then the powerups and debug rewrite some memory to change the code to run correctly, and then the extra slots are the same as the main one.

Now onto your SD. Download this and put it in apps like you would any other program. Then download my XML/folder setup above and extract it onto your computer. Then make a folder called "riivolution" on the root of your SD, that's where the program looks for any setups. Inside riivolution should be the XML and SMG2Test, then you'd put whatever files/folders with stagedata and objectdata into SMG2Test, here's where the slots come in.

The way my XML works is either the main slot is enabled and the other slots are disabled, or the main slot is disabled and the last option in riivolution is whatever alternate slot the files are in, it allows you to have multiple versions of levels all at once, the files for any extra slots go in SMG2Test > other and then whatever slot you want it in. Then all you have to do is put your SD in the wii/wii u, open up the program/channel, set the options, and play.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sorry if this is just a big text block, I'm trying to make sure you know everything you could ever need to get it working. Hopefully I explained it well enough, it makes sense in my head.
Thanks for all of that! Though there is a problem.
I have everything in place. I can change the music, the text, the objects, etc... But, despite what I do, the actual level never changes. StageData is pretty much irrelevant.
Paste here, your filesystem for where you placed the galaxy at.
Either that, or a line in the XML isn't right.
Here is the directory to where RedBlueExGalaxy is at:
SD Card (E:) / riivolution / Other / slot10 / StageData
Trying to use slot 10. Should I try the main slot instead?
Read NWPlayer123's post about his XML. It has a main slot, or 10 alternate slots you can use. There are two seperate options to use the main slot or any of the alternate slots, and only one can be ticked at a time.
the settings in riivo should be disabled, disabled, enabled, slot 10, if you're using that folder, and likewise for any other one besides the one in SMG2Test itself, which would be enabled disabled enabled disabled.
Sooooo... where do the .arc files go? /riivolution/SMG2Test/other/slot10/StageData ? or do the folders, such as Hub, Mansion, and Pinna Park go in there, or just the arc files (this has been confusing me for the past few days.. So sorry to revive an old thread)
Yes, in there if you're using slot 10 (last option should have slot 10 selected and first option should be disabled). If you want it in the "main" slot, just put files in /riivolution/SMG2Test/StageData, turn on the first option and debug if you want and then test.
Ok i figured it out, I put RedBlueExGalaxyMap.arc into /riivolution/SMG2Test/Other/Slot10/StageData and made a new folder named RedBlueExGalaxy and put it in there, and for YoshiCaughtPlanet.arc into /riivolution/SMG2Test/Other/Slot10/ObjectData
Hope this helps anyone in the future and thank you guys for helping me, even though you didn't intend to XD
