Well I'm not expert about this, but I think I know the basic about Nintendo/SMG-quality models.

It's a bit hard to say, but custom models often don't has the same quality as Nintendo because they look.... simple... gah it's hard to say >.<

But whatever. Nintendo models has some important things that make them look more realistic. They have shadow around itself and on other things, very important. The textures is lighter/darker on several places to make it look realistic too, a very important thing too.

Just look on models in SMG and you'll see what I mean. Often when you're using textures from SMG, your custom models look more Nintendo-quality than something else, but that isn't enough.

Well I don't know. Try to make fake shadow and dark/light swiches on the textures on your model in Blender or something. Or you can make the textures darker/lighter on different places in an image editor. I'm not expert.

Well I hope this would help, and if you have any more ideas about how Nintendo-quality models is made, just post below!

You say that like it's an easy thing to do.

Nintendo's modellers are professionals. Similarly, almost all people with enough skills to be considered 'professional' are going to work for game studios. Few of them are willing to do this shit as a hobby project that doesn't get them money.

Well you're right. But this makes the models just look more like Ninendo's. We almost can't make them exactly as Nintendo's. But we can try our best.

Another tip for making better quality levels is to not use SketchUp.
I don't want to claim that SketchUp is bad or anything, it works great for making low-poly SM64/DS levels.
But if you want to make higher quality levels I would suggest learning Blender, Maya or 3ds Max etc.

And another one is reuse textures from the original game, make the model be very detailed, knowing the limits, and don't add cameos to non nintendo stuff.

Could you please not say that. sketchup is not good for making SM64/ds levels. you can search the evidence for it yourself.

but yes blender is a good choice.

Okay, it was kinda bad worded by me, I meant it's easier to make SM64 quality levels in SketchUp then SMG quality. I prefer using blender for both of them.

Maya is a good thing to use, but it's overcomplicated.

Most programs for making high-quality models are really hard to use, unless you're an easy learner.
