I've seen a few custom levels here and the minimaps have looked really good and professional! I was just wondering, what's everyone's secret to doing this? Figuring out where everything is, getting the size of platforms, stretches of land and so on just seems really complicated to me and I've been really putting it off. (Along with music, but that's another story.)
Is there an easier way to go about this? Thanks! |

It's not quite that simple. I take a screenshot of the top orthogonal view of the model in Blender (most 3D modelling programs will have this). Make a note of the centre of your model, for Blender Object>Apply>Location, Object>Transform>Geometry to Origin, selecting the object will place the arrows in the centre. In your image editing program make sure the centre of the image matches up with the centre of the model. This will ensure that the positions are correct on the minimap. Make sure you save the image as an Indexed (Mode>Indexed for GIMP and Photoshop) bitmap (.BMP). Once you've imported it you'll need to play around with the 'Minimap Co-ordinates Scale' until it looks right. To change the scale of the minimap, not the co-ordinates you can use 'Minimap Scale' objects, these don't affect co-ordinates. |
