At school — the speed I get here is very inconsistent… Probabloy the fastest I've seen it go is around 30Mbit/s download.

Upload's still higher than mine, and download...I envy you.

I actually have a rather nice computer, except the internet connection's pretty crappy.

My provider is a total idiot. Happy with the 120Mbps though.
My LAN speed (=copying to my harddrive on my server) is like 80mb/S (MEGABYTE).

Network is great here.

Yes... Everyone has the same LAN capabilities, it has nothing to do with your ISP. What really matters in lan is wired connection and a good router.
