Get ready to read a wall of text!
Again, this is probably a copy of another thread here, and I have to say some things that have obviously already been said before, but this is just so wrapped up in my mind I can't possibly not take ahold of it. This project didn't see a new trailer this summer and that's extremely bad news. I appreciate the fact that cosmological tried to make a revival of some sort, and I did see some progress for a few days, but to no avail. Over the summer I actually considered making my own hack and getting out of here. Can you believe that? I really think we should make some big changes around here if we want to make this project go forward. But I don't make these decisions, I can't do anything to change the project. Hmm... And i'm not talking about the SMG Hacking department in general, shibboleet has been making some great modifications to Whitehole recently, so why not put the extra capability to use? Well here are our problems: ____________________ 1. We are in desperate need of some decent texture mappers, I realize that over the past few days FnarGod has returned. But I just don't think we are using his skills enough. I think we are just waiting for time to pass right now. I don't think modeling is our problem, I think it's texturing. 2. The project leader, Glem3 has a thing going on to not show up for a few months and then come back for a few weeks. If we are going to move on with the project, we must not worry about him. But as I said, us normal users can't make decisions for the project ourselves. We need someone to lead the project when Glem3 is absent. Of course cosmological is stepping in and making changes. But i'm just not seeing any differences. 3. Motivation, motivation, motivation, this is a huge subject in the whole world of hacking. We need inspiration and motivation to do the things we are aiming to do. Back in the day, I used to get extremely hyped in the world of Galaxy 2 hacking when Martboo48 made a new SMG2 Hacking video. It astounded my mind, it was awesome. I'm just not getting that same feeling anymore with the recent things going on. It's sad, but i'm not sure how to go by it. _____________________ So what are we going to do about it? I honestly have no clue, as I said before, I haven't been motivated to hack Galaxy 2 in a long time. I'm not very good at making decisions. But I know there are some people here that make great decisions. And I hope those people will speak out, mod or not. Personally, if I had anything to say about it. I'd think we should make some more conceptual levels for another hype trailer before going on. I really don't want to pull a newer and not release a trailer for a couple months. And yes, I know Newer ended up being finished and successful. But this project isn't Newer, this is our own project and we need to differentiate it between other hacks. In all honesty, this hack, if done right, could be a million times bigger than Newer, it's all about what we decide to do with it. And if we decide to get it done. I'm a Level Creator, so i'm always open to making levels from the models we are using. Problem is, there are no models to make levels from. Can we change that? Of course! Thank you for reading! ~MK7tester |

Well uh we were still talking about doing a demo for 2 things that we've finally gotten working over the years. (Not naming. ) ____________________ a |

Well we could easily make some little concept models for those two things instead of worrying about other things. You know, some nice looking beta levels that show their performance greatly. |

Merp sorry, but I didn't mean to put "Demo"
Just a showoff video. xP Also I've been bugging Arisotura too much about getting repo access so I could actually put my Whitehole changes on there. ____________________ a |

Well I'm finally motivated back into making designs now that I started my game design class at school, so I'm going to get several designs out hopefully so we can combine ideas and make a final revised design with everything we want to see and get it approved. ____________________ "I hate playing musical chats" ~ Quote of the month |

What i'm trying to point out here is that we can always make a few levels that won't make it into the final game, but look good enough to show anyways. Also, these types of things create motivation, which can help us for the real project. |

The thing we SHOULD be doing is changing the way we think about progress. If you have a design in your mind for a galaxy that you think is awesome, GO FOR IT. Even if there's already a design, it doesn't hurt to make your own since that means more content and more ideas in the format you'd expect in a finalized design. Once we think there's enough content, we can This is exactly what I'm doing with Ghostly Graveyard. We have a design, we just need to create art which I have ideas for and am currently doing. ____________________ "I hate playing musical chats" ~ Quote of the month |

Well actually, NWP, instead of designing levels, why don't you continue texturing and making models?
TBH, It's the thing you're best at. Also, not much attention has been given to Whitehole. Why? Because there is no SMG Hacking Scene All people care about is SMG2.5, nobody likes Hacking it in General. We need to get people interested in making levels for SMG2 (Not for the project) and hopefully Whitehole will expand, and everybody will get more interested. ____________________ a |

This is the most true thing I've read in a while. We really do need to think about the concept of progress. I guess this means I can draw my design for Fearsome Factory now. Status: It was really, really fun, guys - thanks for the ride!

Well that's exactly what I was planning to do. Once I finish Ghostly Graveyard's art I'm going to use my available resources to get the textures needed and then model and texture said drawings. However, it's a matter of what I'm really motivated to do. Even in terms of modeling you still need to have ideas. Take for example Agent's models. He has ideas and he puts cool little things in his models. It truly all is one big concept that we have to ACCEPT and EMBRACE. ____________________ "I hate playing musical chats" ~ Quote of the month |

One thing I think we need to realize is that we have enough active designers and we should try to get more people to do things we actually need, like MrRean said. |

There is always too much of a good thing, yes, but we literally have 2-3 active designers. cosmo /kinda/ can work on stuff, but really isn't all that good at getting bulk stuff done, and polari is /kinda/ designing but can't really create art until he gets back from his trip, and hasn't made anything for a while, and so together they count as one, and then there's me who hasn't done anything for a while either since I stopped working aquaflame, and then there's stygmax who has kinda sorta made designs and such. I would say our combined efforts add up to around 2 or 3. I don't think that's /enough/. ____________________ "I hate playing musical chats" ~ Quote of the month |

I agree we need to push another trailer out, but it has to use levels that WILL be in the final game. And the levels don't have to be 100% finished and polished; we'd likely only have to show one planet of each or at most a launch-star sequence, and even the planet can be reworked later.
In addition, we need to release another demo. Planet Plains introduced the fact that hey, we can put custom planets in the game! Now this one needs to show that we can use what exists in the game to create completely new types of challenges and obstacles! ____________________ |AgentSplaturn| if someone uses an external hard disk to store porn on |AgentSplaturn| is it their sex drive? Here we go again complaining about ERMAHGERD WE NEED CONTENT WE'RE GONNA DIE OTHERWISEbullshit that we've been having forMONTHS NOW.Let's focus on getting contentDONErather than rushing it. We keep gettingSIDETRACKEDIt's theSAME DAMN THINGas starting theseSIDE PROJECTS.SMG2.5 is not a side project, so let's work on SMG2.5 like you all keep complaining about.Even when we're creating levels for the trailers we choose certain ones because they are "better". Let's choose ones that are closer to being FINISHED. We shouldn't even be worrying about demos either way. Nintendo just burns the full game onto a disc, slaps a time limit onto it and calls it a demo. And people LOVE IT. ____________________ "I hate playing musical chats" ~ Quote of the month |

Don't you understand that's not my point at all? You have motivation to work on a trailer when in reality you're getting sidetracked and should just work on designs and once we have enough content, realize it and create a trailer WITH said content. ____________________ "I hate playing musical chats" ~ Quote of the month |

So work on designs till the end of eternity? Seems legit. We should just make a trailer for designs at this point. :| |

Posted by NWPlayer123 You all get so sidetracked with "WE NEED TO FINISH THIS FOR THE TRAILER" that you slow down progress by focusing your worn-down resources on it. You ignore the point of the project in the first place - to create a game, and ONLY to create a game. ____________________ "I hate playing musical chats" ~ Quote of the month |

So yeah.
1. Motivation has gone We have seen how many of those 'motivational speeches' etc, and what has happened so far? Everyone would think it would kick the project into high gear, we'd all keep shitting content nonstop and it'd be awesome. What has happened really? It barely changed anything in SMG2.5's pace. 2. Drama drama drama I won't go over this in detail but basically we staff continually have to take action and ban people, which shouldn't be happening. SSL and NSK, MG3, now MoronCowbell... No, that's not me being an evil dictator. It's just that it doesn't matter how useful you are if you can't respect the rules. Things work the same way in real life. If you cause shit at work, you get fired, regardless of how much work you do. Most of the banned members come back, though. But that still shouldn't be happening. One banned member means less potential work for the project. If you really care about the project, do your best to not get banned. 3. SMG2.5 is not a tiny project You may consider Newer to be a big project, but it's not that big compared to the fucking monster that SMG2.5 is. Modelling is said to be the project's main bottleneck. I agree, modelling isn't an easy task, especially when you must reach Nintendo's quality. We tried posting about the project on 3D modelling forums, and noone cared. What else would you do? 4. Over two years of SMG2.5 already And where are we? We don't even have one full world designed. Most of the original content was made just to amaze the Youtube community, and has since been discarded. Waste of time. Is there motivation to work on this? People work on this as a hobby. But it's just too big of a project to be considered a hobby project. So yeah, there goes the motivation... 5. What about SMG hacking in general? Kuribo64 is over one year old, and during that time I have observed why people come here. Typically, they come either for SM64DS hacking or for SMG2.5. But never for SMG hacking in general. The only attempts that have been made at making non-SMG2.5 levels with Whitehole were SMS level remakes. The ObjectDB and wiki are seeing little to no activity. SMG hacking itself is impopular. The games being 3D, it's considered 'too hard' by many. And the SMG games themselves have lost in popularity. Just look at when Anarchy was announced, all the hype it caused. That was what, about two or three years ago. And now, Whitehole, despite offering the 3D preview Anarchy lacked, goes completely ignored (outside of SMG2.5). To sum it up Basically, we're into a huge project based on a not-so-popular-anymore game. There's too many work for the current team to finish it before circa 2030. I'm not trying to be negative here, but seriously, there are only two solutions. a) radically change the project so it has a chance at getting done (maybe reducing it or whatever), or b) just admitting we can't finish it, and do something else. ____________________ NSMBHD - Kafuka - Jul melonDS the most fruity DS emulator there is zafkflzdasd |
