Just get homebrew, it's the only way to run SMGExtractor. And it's just as legal as Riivo.

I did and now it works Homebrew is ok then I just don't wan't to install anything illegal or brick my wii.

I have a suggestion for SMGExtractor. What about extracting the apploader? I have checked the source code and the Wii Disc format at WiiBrew and it could be possible if we extend the FST_INFO structure in fst.c to add an entry for the apploader offset and then add functions to read the apploader (I didn't check if it works).

But I have to overhaul the code a bit, namely, implementing overlapped I/O and other good stuff...

Just wondering but would this work on wii u?
I thought usb loaders on wii u coudln't copy a retail disc to a hdd/usb, so did anyone tried to copy files on a wii u with the extractor?
If not, I will try to know for sure.

As long as you can have HBC installed on a WiiU, this should work.

All it requires is AHBPROT access but that's just because of a design flaw in the DI library. If I build a modified one, I can remove that requirement.

SMGExtractor is also different from disc backup tools in that it doesn't read the raw disc data. Instead it reads the partitions and extracts the files.

Edit: Ok I can confirm that it doesn't work (for me), it failed to load the disc (it said)

Then your disc is either scratched, or damaged, if it can't even load it.

Well I also tried and installed smg2.5 demo and launched it with riivolution, what just worked.
I think it's just that people can't use the wii u disk drive to copy or extract stuff from it, but yeah I don't know, not much knowlegde about it to say for sure.

Yeah, that's why I asked if someone managed to get it working on wii u, but MM said it should work so I tested it myself and that was the result

(the "disc loading" error)

Well that's weird. SMGExtractor reads the files in the exact same way a game would do it, so it should work.

If you have the iso for the game, you can use Dolphin to extract the files.
