So now that we are actually designing levels, we face an issue that really affects how 2.5 will play: Difficulty.

A lot of people have insisted that this should pretty much be its own game, and therefore have the same difficulty curve as the first two games. However, we can assume that people willing to actually download a fanmade game like this have some experience with SMG. So, how are we going to do this? A normal difficulty curve, or lots of difficulty throughout the game?

Here's my opinion: One of the biggest complaints about SMG and SMG2 is that they are too easy. I can kinda see that. Mario tends to be easy. Now, I also feel that it would be unprofessional to have random difficulty that spikes. So, I think I know how I would like to see the game go. I think that we should have a difficulty curve, but have it start higher. Maybe we could start at world 3 or 4 difficulty, and work our way up to a more difficult world 7. Of course, this is just my opinion, so feel free to discuss!

Hmm. Something I really wonder is though what will the MAX difficulty for the final level be, and how can we classify "difficulty" nicely.

For example are we going to make all the World 7 Galaxies as hard as the Perfect Run, or easier or harder?

Is the final level going to be as hard as fan level "Master Quest" of MrBean30000vr or something?

Also I fully agree that this hack should be generally harder than SMG2 and SMG1, but not TOO much harder, as we shouldn't really expect all people who play this hack to be really good at SMG1 and SMG2 :)

Yes, the general idea is to have *at least world 7* be *about* as hard as the final galaxy.

Right. Like I said, making the game generally harder is just an improvement to common complaints. I don't think that we should spike the difficulty so high that world 1 is like world 7. I think we should have the curve be smooth like SMG, but have it start a bit higher than it did in the real games.

I was thinking World 1 should be medium, World 2-3 be moderately hard, World 4 be hard, and W5-W6 be SUPER hard. And W7 the difficulty can vary. That is what I think.

Because W7 has bonus galaxies. It would give the player some relief after completing EotU

Well... changed. W7 will not be easy. (Except SMG Star 2) But some of the galaxies won't be as hard as W5-6. SOME of them.

Nah, that still makes no sense. Any galaxy should be just as good as any other to relax. Case in point looking at the visuals in Coastline or Season Cycle or the gameplay in Retro Remix or Fearsome Factory IMO

Relax? This is a mario game... and also, the point of the thread is to determine how we're going to have the difficulty play out. Of course w7 is difficult, that's not the question. It's how difficult should the game be?

It should have a normal difficulty progression, but start at medium difficulty instead of easy. It will get SUPER HARD at the end.

Overall, the game should be just a bit more difficult than SMG1/2 as people have said above. However, each world should have an increased difficulty so that if we were to graph the worlds and their difficulty on a line graph, there would be a diagonal line going from just above the bottom left corner of the graph to the graph's top right corner.

While I don't really dislike that system alot, why have some galaxies easier than others, and why have it be in such a awkward order (like why do we have to start at hard, then instantly go to super hard, then hard again, then super hard and then insanely hard)? It seems so weird.

It would make more sense if the first three galaxies of world 7 (RHP, RR and HF) to be hard, and then it escalates to Super Hard with the 3 remaining ones (AC, PC and FB) discounting SMG. Isn't that how SMG2 did it too (Mario Squared, Rolling Coaster and Twisty Trials were easier than Stone Cyclone, Boss Blitz and Flip-Out in my opinion).

Or perhaps maybe you need the difficulty spike? It may be Tv tropes but still..

if that doesn't suit your fancy what about a custom difficulty for everything?
