What about an underground room that has Diggas doing "synchronized excavating"?

Synchronised Excavating? Huh? You mean they're all doing the same digging? (It does sound cool, though)

It is inspired by someone's "Octoomba Concert" idea for Rock 'N' Roll. Basically, the Diggas move in patterns like layered circles, layered ovals, etc. Sort of like the lines of a ripple.

How about at one point we have a pure platforming section on top of crystals? It can break up the pace between the constant drilling. Mario drills downward into a crystal cave where he needs to make it from one side to another to get to some dirt to drill somewhere else. More crystal-usage would make it a bit less like "Spin-Dig 2.0" and could be a cool place to add more 'Bowser' elements.

Finally, my second draft.

Planets:
-Main planet: a huge cylindrical dirt planet with huge gems, Diggas and drilling machines everywhere.
-Drilling puzzle planets
-Boss planet

Star 1:
Mario lands on the side of the main planet, next to a caged Luma, "Oh, Mario! Could you help me out of here? Those stinkers buried the key in that hill!" And so he has to take one of the numerous Drills left all over the place, and make his way over to a dirt hill, avoiding various Diggas and machines, and the occasional Magikoopa perched on top of miniature towers. (the rest of the surface should be a carbon copy of the

Mario has to drill through the top of the hill (with a drill spot to mark it), reaching a small cave littered with drilling machines and huge gems, forming a kind of small maze with the key at one corner. As in, big gems of varying sizes (but still about the original size), with Diggas / Undergrunts burrowing in circles around them, and with machines or mini BJ doors blocking off many spaces so that it’s rather like a maze. This should be rather small though.

When he returns to the Luma via a drill spot where the key was (made obvious by a sign pointing it out), :"Oh, thanks! But the pipe leading to the heart of this mine has been locked...I'm pretty sure it's in one of the outer parts of the mine. I'll make a shortcut for you!" *Launch Star spawn*

Mario now has to go through a couple quick (2-3) drilling puzzles on individual planets. The first one should be Agent000’s puzzle (a 2D dirt and metal planet. Mario has to
get up on a higher platform to get a good look at the puzzle, which bounces him around inside and to the Launch Star when Mario drills in the right place)
The second could be a large round 2D planet composed of a few rotating rings of metal and dirt. Mario has to find the dirt on each ring and drill his way to the Launch Star in the center.
(there is still space for one more if anyone wants to help and post a pic of a puzzle?)
After the key is found at the end of the last puzzle, a Luma wishes him good luck and blasts him to near the pipe.

He emerges in a cavern, like the one before, except swarming with enemies, and without any machines. Gems of every size clutter up the cavern, mostly clustered near the middle. Navigating around (or killing) the Diggas and Undergrunts, Mario must move between the gems and jump into a large hole in the center, after killing 3 Magikoopas who are in a triangle around the hole.

The hole takes Mario to a large metal corridor with a layer of dirt over a metal floor, and Bowser Jr. doors lining the walls. A batch of large (slightly flattened) gems are being pounded by Ledge Hammers, some beating down on the gems (safe for Mario) and some beating down on the dirt between the gems (not safe). Mario has to dash between the safe spots, but he’s not fast enough to reach the next gem. He has to drill down with good timing under the Hammers to avoid getting crushed, then run. A signboard (ranged speech bubble) should inform Mario of this.

After he makes it through this (rather short) part of the corridor, Mario comes across an small area where the gems are being heated by flamethrowers/fire F.L.U.D.D.s. firing together. A simple matter.

A drilling spot at the end of that short section takes Mario out of the ground, and to a raised platform where the Toad Brigade have a Launch Star to Bowser Jr. and his mecha of choice...Digga-Leg.

Boss:
An enlarged Digga Leg fought on a donut shaped 2D planet, so the Diggas will end up there rather than the outside. Also, there's a round metal ball (with BJ's logo) in the middle of the space, stopping Mario from just stomping all the Diggas inside, and so that the only way to kill them is drilling up from under them. This way, Mario'll have to kill them one by one, then quickly run to Digga-Leg's underside and drill up.

There's always a light at the end of the tunnel. Of course, it's usually an oncoming express train.

Slow and steady gets you trampled by the other guys.

That does not sound very clear :P.

Other than that, good job!

Edited it slightly.

So, I'm supposed to PM it to Glem or cosmo, right?

Yes, you PM it to one of them. Just try to expand a little bit more on the boss fight before fight before you send it to ine them. I would describe how Mario would bypass the metal ball or go through it.

There can be a tunnel maze somewhere.
