Hi, I'm new here so I apologize if I'm posting in the wrong place or being annoying. If I am in the wrong place, please tell me anywhere I can look for requests like this one 😓

I wasn't sure where else to ask about this, but would it be possible to commission someone for a Super Mario 64 DS rom hack? And if so, how much would it cost? I only have a stupid pre-paid card I got from my job, so I wouldn't be able to send money directly yet, I'd either have to wait until I get another job or pay in like a gift card or something. I just feel bad not giving something back in return for asking for this, again sorry if I sound stupid or out of the loop on this stuff 😓

The ROM Hack in question wouldn't be used for any hacks or anything, and it wouldn't feature any custom levels or stars or anything like that, it's just a modification of the original game itself. Although the stuff I want done to it sounds pretty complicated on paper, so I apologize if I'm asking for too much here. I also won't use or upload it anywhere probably, this is just for me to have a better version of the original game to play through

Here's the list of stuff I would want changed:

1.) The game's overall physics being changed to match the N64 version's physics, or at least close enough to it. I really don't like the physics engine for DS, and I know it's at least possible to modify it since I've seen other hacks do so like Super Mario Star World and some other hack I forget the name of but it basically changes the physics and lets everyone wall-kick, as well as removing Luigi's twirl move. I don't know how complicated this would be to change, but that's the main thing I want. If that's the only change added, I'd be happy with just that. But if it's impossible to do, I understand that as well

2.) Make everyone swim at the same speed, being Luigi's speed. This is mostly Wario's fault, blame him for this request. The reason I chose Luigi's speed is for convenience, since I *believe* he's the fastest swimmer, I could be wrong

3.) Give Wario new moves. This is probably the most out there and complicated ask if I had to guess, so I completely understand if this one isn't possible. Basically, I just want two things added to Wario's moveset: His shoulder bash in place of a basic punch or dive, and his inhale move from Wario World, which would pull both enemies and coins closer to you. I was hoping that maybe the inhale move would give a niche use to Wario by making him the ideal character to use for 100 Coin missions or something. Again, none of this is needed. This would just make Wario cooler to play as in my opinion

4.) Remove the run button and change Jump to A, Attack to B, and First Person to Y. The hack I forgot the name of does this as well, I like that change a lot

5.) On-the-fly character changing. This is another one that sounds complicated and out there, so I understand if it isn't at all possible. But I think it would be cool if, after unlocking a new character, you can change to them on the fly while playing levels. Maybe in the pause menu, you have an option to select the caps like you do at the start of a level as Yoshi. Or maybe mapping it to select, and you just cycle between the caps. Ideally, you would actually swap the characters instead of just cycling caps so their voices change as well, but that's not entirely necessary. This part is completely unnecessary, but I thought it would make things that much more convenient

6.) Disable stars from kicking you out of levels automatically. This one I feel is the easiest to implement, but I'm not 100% sure. Whenever you collect a star, I want there to be a prompt that shows up, asking you if you want to leave the level or not

7.) Other general changes such as letting each character access the Bowser levels (If you play as Yoshi, a cap would appear from either Bowser's fireballs or just somewhere on the stage at the start), giving everyone the ability to wall kick, and allowing Yoshi to break orange bricks by ground pounding

That's every request I would have for this hack, I know that was a mouthful I apologize. Again, the only one I would want the most out of all is the physics change. If that's the only thing that could be done, I would still be happy with that. And again, I wouldn't release this hack, this would be purely for me. But I'd be willing to commission for it however I'm able to. Again I apologize if I'm being annoying or dumb here, maybe if nothing else someone could push me in the general direction of learning how to change all this stuff myself? But that's all I have to say, sorry for yapping so much 😓

I think this is better asked on the SM64DS Hacking Discord - it's where the advanced hackers are, including the dev of one of the hacks you mentioned. But once the full versions of these hacks release, most code hacks used in them will probably be distributed open-source, so you could apply them yourself, unless some patches clash.
The hack you forgot the name of is Super Mario 256 by HayashiSTL. I know she's on Discord.
2.) Make everyone swim at the same speed, being Luigi's speed.
Luigi is the fastest, yeah. I think this wouldn't even be so hard to change, since it's just some memory value that needs to be changed.
Shoulder Bash is in SM256, the inhale move just sounds like a nerfed Yoshi Tongue to me.
4.) Remove the run button and change Jump to A, Attack to B, and First Person to Y. The hack I forgot the name of does this as well, I like that change a lot
SM256? I thought it had the vanilla control scheme. SMSW on the other hand does have custom control schemes. Remapping buttons shouldn't be that hard - it's just altering memory values. Plus, there's the SM64DS analog control patch for players on the 3DS family of handhelds that works with most hacks.
SM256 has this, but all characters are unlocked from the start. Wouldn't be that hard though to implement some conditionals for character buttons to appear only if the character has been unlocked. The caps and unused cap blocks use such checks too.
6.) Disable stars from kicking you out of levels automatically. This one I feel is the easiest to implement, but I'm not 100% sure. Whenever you collect a star, I want there to be a prompt that shows up, asking you if you want to leave the level or not
There's a patch that does this, there's a SplattyDS video on it on YT.
It's on Kuribo64: General SM64DS Hacking > [ASM Resource] Changing behaviours of objects, levels etc. or whatever that thread was called.

I suggest you request your commission on Discord, though, I don't know if anyone would accept money. Perhaps Skelux, but (I don't use Discord so correct me if I'm wrong) he's not on the SM64DS Hacking Discord I believe (banned); I know he is on a Discord; I'd check his YT account.

Hi, thanks for the pointers. I'll try asking in the discord at some point later today :)

The hack I was thinking of wasn't 256, although I have heard of that one before, but I haven't played it myself. I finally found (I think) the original hack that I was talking about, but it doesn't really have a name since it's just the original 64 ds but with the changes I mentioned, no new levels or anything. Here's the hack (I think) I mentioned earlier: https://kuribo64.net/board/thread.php?id=3762

As for the SplattyDS vid you mentioned, it looks like an xdelta patch. Is there a way for me to combine it with the hack mentioned above? Since it already has the Wall jumping, bowser door for every character, etc, I could probably just build off of that. The physics that one uses is fine on its own, I'd just prefer if it was closer to the n64 version. But I completely understand, I'll ask around in the discord about it like you suggested :)

The inhale move was moreso meant to have a niche use for 100 coins more than anything else. Like, it would act like a coin magnet pretty much. Yoshi's tongue *does* grab coins, but only one at a time, whereas the inhale move would be able to pull in a bunch at once if Wario was close enough. Now that I think about it though, it wouldn't really be *that* useful, I was mostly thinking about Bob-Omb Battlefield with the coins in the sky being particularly annoying to grab

Has 256 released any of its patches at all? Like the on-the-fly character changing, even if it unlocks everyone at the start that would still be fine. If not though that's fine too :)

How would I go about changing the character's swimming speed if you know? If not, that's completely fine, I'll probably ask this is the discord as well, I'm completely new to SM64ds hacking so I wouldn't know where to start 😓

I don't think many SM256 code hacks have been released, with the exception of some stuff like custom actors and DLs patch, but I've done some research in dy's thread:
How to make Star Gets not boot you out of the course
Changing swimming speed
Making Yoshi break Brick Blocks
ASM knowledge is required, but this user learned coding in it in two weeks, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you for your help! I'd be down to learn how to ASM code sometime, if I can't figure it out I might ask around in the discord, but I'll try and learn myself first. From looking at the screenshots and using the "Additional Patches" section of the 64 DS Editor, I think I have a basic gist of what I'm supposed to do, but please let me know if I'm wrong anywhere if you understand ASM code at all

In the additional patch "Fix Swimming" the code looks like this:

START EUR

000203B8:
02 10 A0 E3

END EUR

I should mention the hack I'm building off of is using the European version. I don't know what Fix Swimming does, I'm assuming there's some bug with swimming in the European version since the patch is only EUR compatible. Anyways, from just taking a glance at the screenshots you sent me, my guess is the patch I would have to apply for fast swimming would be something like this:

START EUR

//Change Mario's swimming speed to Luigi's:
00051AF8:
10

END EUR

Or something along those lines, does that sound about right?

I scrolled through Skelux's posts, since he wrote most of these additional patches, and what 'Fix swimming' does, is increase swimming acceleration (not speed) and keep the player character still in water instead of them floating upwards while being idle underwater.

My ASM knowledge is near-zero. I will learn it sometime, but right now I am focusing on C++. I do know someone who can help. He's active both on the board and on Discord, but on the board it might take some time before he answers your message, so I recommend messaging pants64 on Discord. Pants's specialty is ASM.

And European version is the best one to use, yeah - it's the default ROM used for SM64DS hacking, so 99.99% of all code hacks is for the European version.

I think so, he is called pants64 on most platforms, so likely on Discord too.
