This is the hub, the place the player will return to hundreds of times during the game. We need this to be great.

Great doesn't mean that it has to be super complex, you know.

They're not planets, they're ships. It makes perfect sense that the people Mario helped would lend a ship to return the favor. Having actual planets would be weird since...well, they're planets and can't be controlled to fly with Mario's ship. But having multiple ships would give some needed space and variation to the hub that Starship Mario (and even the Observatory to and extent) sorely lacked.

My idea: Mario starts out his journey with only a small starshroom (3 at very most) and a ragtag crew of toads. As he progresses and helps more people in the cosmos, they (Gearmos, Whittles, Bob-Ombs, etc) join him on his journey with one of their own ships. By the time he reaches the final level, Mario has built up a fleet of starships ready to combat Bowser's forces. Perhaps the final level could even feature the various ships as planets, where the NPCs help Mario reach Bowser!

Reasons why this idea is awesome:
- It fits with the space theme.
- The hub will gradually expand outward rather than simply unlocking new areas of the already-existing hub.
- Each additional NPC ship will be a unique experience; for example, the Gearmos would have a very mechanical ship with some machinery showing, while the Whittles would have a very basic ship with a more natural theme, perhaps even with trees, grass, and water.
- The ships could be used in the final level to tie in the importance of other characters to the outcome of the story.
- It shows a kind of basic story progression, with Mario gaining allies as he helps people he meets.
- Bonus Moral: Help others and they will help you, because that's what friendship is for

Glem's plan for a Mega-Starshroom should be here, because if the hub is a few regular Starshrooms at the start...that would be more boring than Starship Mario.
A bunch of different ships for each species...probably not. Just some planets directly lifted from their home galaxy tagging along with the starshrooms, perhaps?
And the final level thing is nice (Final Frontier).
