Aquaflame Star 1 – a design by MG3.

After a failed attempt at a design, I have decided to redo it. So this galaxy is essentially going to be a mix of Shiverburn, Cosmic Cove, Deep Dark, and Bonefin. The Shiverburn aspect will have a similar background, and have the concept of two elements, the Cosmic Cove aspect is having a large planet that is mostly covered in water, the Deep Dark aspect comes from the underwater exploration, and the Bonefin aspect comes from the “layer” surrounding the main planet. I will get to what all that is later in my design. Essentially, Star 1 is on one large planet, and Star 2 is on smaller, more linear planets that are in the background in Star 1. The secret star will be found in star 1, and a hungry coin luma (20 coins) will bring Mario to a boiling water planet that is not found in Star 1 or 2.

Aquaflame’s background will be mostly dark blue, with some added lava effects. The sky will be dark (almost black, but with a hint of blue). There will be patches of lava that are also part of the background. In addition, moving flames and fireballs are also in the background. Sparks will be everywhere too. The background will NOT be hazy. Stars and nebulas will also be present as well, to give off the feeling that Mario is truly in deep space. All rock on this planet will have a reddish tint, hinting at the fact that they will feel more lava than water. Surrounding the main planet only is a thick layer of red, bright, water – almost like a hybrid between lava and water. Star 2 will actually use this, and even feature some Ice Flower use. This “Barrier” has two holes: One that Mario will get through as he lands on the Main Planet, and another one that the Hungry Luma launches Mario through to reach the secret star. Other than that, the Main planet is completely enclosed.

Planets:

Main Planet: Similar to Cosmic Cove’s, at least in size and shape. But this planet is noticeably larger. Unlike Cosmic Cove’s, there is actually a center to the planet, which must be visited for Mario to complete Star 1. There is a circular landing area, which features aboveground swimming. A tunnel will put Mario just below surface level, and have him swim around the planet. There is another circular water area that features more aboveground swimming/platforming. Then, a tunnel takes Mario to the depths of the planet, - to the center. The center features a massive volcano with a crater above it (Rock covers it, but it does exist). But the crater is sealed by rock. Mario must erupt himself out of the volcano to escape, and get the star. This planet is where the entire Star 1 takes place. There is a North, South, East and West to the planet. The West is the landing area. A tunnel takes Mario from the West to the East. A deeper tunnel takes Mario from the East to the South, and the volcano erupts Mario from the South to the North. The East and West are both craters, not too deep, that house platforming and swimming, with a tunnel connecting them. The South is literally nothing, except this is where the base of the underwater volcano is. The center is large, but there is enough room between the center and surface to house the tunnels that lead from the West to East, and the East to the South/bottom of the center. The North is one massive crater, which has the top of the volcano, and that is the only way to get to the star. The crater surrounds the top of the volcano, so the inside of the volcano is the only way to get through.

Boiling Water planet: A planet that has spots of real water and boiling water. This planet is shaped like a pretzel, and there are 5 silver stars here. Sometimes, the spots of real water move through the boiling water, so make sure you are not colorblind! (This planet is essentially rock with just some water/boiling water covering the surface. Similar to the way Fluffy Bluff used its water. Only 2 silver stars will be collected by the moving water concept. This is also somewhat similar to the gravity spotlights in Bowser’s Galaxy Reactor, but doesn’t involve gravity at all. The other 3 silver stars will be collected by jumping across normal spots of water while avoiding the boiling water.

Without further ado, here Wii go!

Star 1, “The Aquatic Volcano”

Mario travels through one of the two holes in the exterior barrier surrounding the main planet. The flight path turns him 90 degrees so that he lands on the West part of the planet. This is a circular crater (mainly water) that has a small amount of rock as a landing platform. Mario then steps in the water, and can freely swim around. At first, it looks like this circular starting area is a dead end, but once Mario goes underwater, he will see that there are spiraling flames that move in various directions. They are mostly guarding a circular tunnel entrance. Mario must time his swim so he can dodge the flames, and go into the tunnel. This tunnel is the one that takes Mario from the West Side of the planet to the East Side of the planet. Mario can grab a Koopa shell here, to make swimming faster. Once in the tunnel, flames will start shooting out at Mario. Mario must position himself in the correct position, so he can avoid the flames. The last set of flames in the first tunnel surround Mario on all sides, except in the middle, so Mario must swim in the middle of the flames, even with the shell if he has it.

Mario then reaches the second crater (East Side). This crater features a whole layer of rock above the water underneath. It does contain much more rock than the first crater (West Side) ever did. Since Mario enters this crater underwater, he must swim to the top. But the layer of rock will make it look like Mario will die. There is a crack in the rock near the edge, and Mario must launch a Koopa shell at it to create an opening. There are Koopa Shells underwater too, in case Mario lost his during the first tunnel. Once on the rock, Mario finds that lava is nearly everywhere. The only spots without lava are somewhat far away. There is also a mini-crater within the crater that will take Mario down a new, different tunnel. A long jump will get Mario to one of these open spots. From there, it is a simple backflip will get Mario over the edge of the mini-crater. Then, Mario descends into the next tunnel, which is a lot thinner then the first.

The second tunnel is much thinner and more complex than the first. Once again, it is all underwater, but this time, there are boost rings as well to speed Mario up. Halfway through the second tunnel, it opens up quite a bit. There are air bubbles here, coins, and even a well-hidden comet coin. In addition, there is a hungry coin luma here, who needs 15 coins. There are 20 in the area, and if Mario collects 15, the Hungry Luma will turn into a launch star and take Mario up the way he came in, launch out of the crater, go through the second hole in the exterior, and reach the Boiling Water Planet. For the rest of Star 1, Mario will go through the rest of the tunnel, which is back to being very thin with boost rings. But some flames will also appear, making things more difficult. Eventually, Mario gets to the South end of the planet, which is actually the bottom of the planet’s center.

Mario now reaches the center of the planet. This area is HUGE, and houses a large volcano as well. The top of the volcano can’t be seen, as rock completely surrounds it. Mario searches around for a way out, (there are air bubbles here), but can’t find one. Mario eventually has to search the volcano, and finds an opening at the base. From there, it is all swimming through the volcano. Halfway through the top, the water starts to go down. Then, lava starts to rise. This is at the point where Mario reaches a break platform on his swim up the volcano. Mario must now wall-jump to reach the top. At the very top, there is a launch star. This launch star erupts him out of the volcano, and right to the edge of the barrier of the planet – but before he hits the barrier, he hits a power star. The mission has been completed.

I am not too fond of the last area since it seems to overuse the mechanical theme and there is Sunken Satellite:/. Also this galaxy has a mix of Bonefin too with Cosmic Cove, Deep Dark, and Shiverburn as you said.

Actually, I didn't think of that. And I will do a major edit tommorow, where I will remove the "base" section, and add more detail to the structure of the level.

A fiery version of Cosmic Cove's 2D sections in Cosmic Cove's Star 2 would be nice to see.

This will never be approved.

There's barely any detail, and no art :<

This is probably just a sucky first draft he put out quickly.
Let him finish.

But I don't like this design.
Small lava planet? Not very creative. No water either.
Main planet? Well...maybe, but again, not creative, and to be honest, all those "mechanical"/"Bowser theme" lava hazards would be out of place, and just not look too good.
I checked, and I think we're really overusing the one big planet concept in our designs.
But later.

Yes, gc is right.

MG3, I would recommend making this galaxy something like a combination of Bonefin and Shiverburn. I would use Glem3's concept art as a guide for your design.

Erm. Add more planets. The '1 big planet' idea is for the 2nd star of galaxies, not the first.

Well, I actually plan on having the second star have multiple planets. It doesn't matter which star has the big planet, look at Cosmic Cove. And I do plan on doing art.

When Mario launches out if the volcano, he shoukd probably land on a water-fire/lava planetoid and jump up to the Power Star there. I really like the red water barrier and underground volcano concepts! They really fit this galaxy.

And by the way, we already decided that this galaxy is going to have Fiery Gobblegut

Since MG3 will have multiple planets in Star 2, then Gobblegut would definitely work there.

No, WE didn't. gridatttack and I decided we would have it in OUR design. So thus MG3 is not allowed to use it because of the super-secret designer code of conduct.

Also, I'd rather grid and I finish it and polish it and make art like we have already done/are doing, and figure out all stars, before posting.

MG3's ways of just posting a bunch of words and leaving people clueless because of no visuals is flawed IMO. If you're gonna do it, do it right. We also have every little thing thought out, in terms of gameplay and everything, plus it has some unique concepts.

I'm also gonna try to format it well so it isn't giant text blocks like this is so people don't tone it out and go TL;DR like I've done with MG3's.

I will be able to get back on the IRC on Sunday. And I can upload Aquaflame's music. But seriously, we need to have a talk about this "Secret designer code"

Update: I have the rough draft of the art done. The rough draft only exists to show the placing of the entire galaxy, and the layout. I should have the final art done by the end of next week.

I remember talking about using the term Heat Wave in the mission name. I actually thought Heat Wave Galaxy was a good name but if not then it should be in a mission name.

MG3, I think you might want to heavily adapt your design to be Star 2 and to use NWP's and Grid's drawing of the main planet.

Well tbh, there are certain aspects I like of Grid's and NWP's, but overall, I think the design on my planet is better, darker, and longer. I don't want multiple volcanoes, I only want one.
