Defintly using the Spin Drill to switch from life and death.

As in, going inside an alive planet to reach the dead interior

And vice versa.

Yeah. The exterior would be nearly destroyed because of the forces of nature, but on the inside it would be lush <3

We could have Mario make flowers grow and have Mattermouths. Of course, the flowers would be floating in the air when a Mattermouth comes by but the challenge is choose the right moment to walk. One mistake and you will either fall through the eaten holes or be hit by a Mattermouth.

What if the planet is a flat disk shape, so changing between life and death would be as intuitive as switching between the Light/Dark realms in A Link to the Past?

When the player uses the Spin Drill on the Life side, he ends up in the same relative position as he was before, but it's the Death side of the planet!

So basically just like Spin-Dig (except for the theme switch)?

However the problem is that I don't think it would be possible to change the background whenever you drill over to a side, so it would look weird to have a "death" side with a "life" background and vice versa. I rather think we should use pipes for that (as I think that works better).

Well depending on if the planets are about 50/50 of life and death, we could make a background where half is death-themed and the other be life-themed. COMPROMISE :D

Um, Flipsville? I think it is possible for the background to change between life and death witg the Spin Drill.

I know there is no NSMB2 hacking yet, but should we rexture a Prickly Piranha Plant (the black one with red spikes) as a dead one? I have not seen the Prickly Piranha Plant in any designs or ideas so this could be the place to use it.

What does that have to do with nsmb2.....

NSMB2 had Bone Piranha Plants. A Bone Prickly Piranha Plant and a fleshed Prickly Piranha Plant would definitely fit here.

That is, if we could actually duplicate enemies. BTT. This galaxy should definitely revolve over the theme of the sun. Part of it actually gets the sunlight that plants need to survive and the other half doesnt. This could lead to several themes. Alive/Dead, Heat/Chill, and Light/Dark.

"The Day The Mario Galaxy Stood Still." The planets should have a "ring" that must jump over. That would work well with a peanut planet.

Uh, what's a ribg?

How is the undead piranha plants not on topic? enemy duplication might be hard, but by the time we get anything done /someone/ out there will probably have figured it out.

Oops sorry, I meant "ring". Anyways, Bone Piranha Plants would be hard because they would need to crumble like Dry Bones instead of dying like live Piranha Plants.

Yeah, we'd have to somehow give the Dry PP that ability, which could take years.

You know how Slimy Spring was all gloomy and white and creepy, then at the end there was a beautiful sunset? If one mission started out as dead as Ghostly Galaxy and ended as lively as Gusty Garden, it would be a nostalgic concept. Yeah, maybe a second Star or secret Star should be like that. It wouldcobviously require few switches and actors. I would say only the music, lighting, and background would need to change. Everything else would be determined by our choice of enemies and colors.

Also, what about using a Boo Mushroom in the "dead" area, using a Spin Drill to transition, and then using a Bee Mushroom in the "live" area? Yes, I know it sounds gimmicky but it would fit with "life-to-death" theme and vice-versa.

Edit: I will be making the written design here. I have read enough concepts on this and I have a couple of my own.

Because this galaxy is half dead on one side of the planet while alive on the other side, we can have some interesting concepts. I think there should be a ring of planets that are half dead and half alive like the Goldilocks zone in the solar system

--In the middle there could be a large star providing life to the sides of the planets facing it.
--Some of the planets could be spherical with one side being alive and the other being dead.
--There could be some larger flat platforms with flowing streams of water on the close side and lava on the other (I know that is against how physics works in real life, but this is Nintendo)
--Have some ghost level themes on smaller planets further out in the solar system
--maybe a quick section where you go to the central star.
- cosmological

I do think that what cosmological posted could go a long way, I do like the part about having a star in the center of teh galaxy that is making half of it have life, but have the part facing away be dead and gray. I don't think we should go too overboard with >DEATH. This is also STILL life, and there's a lot of cool stuff we can do with having this concept of things being still, no animation or anything.
I also LOVE the part where you could have water on the alive part and lava or something of the like on the other part, maybe mud, but this is far enough in teh game that lava could be fine.
IDK, this is really just up to you guys

Once my designs are off "hiatus" (can't work on them a whole right now :(), I will start a deaign a for this galaxy. I will make sure to balance and death.

I'm impressed with all these great ideas! I want the dead parts to be really dark
and ghostly and maybe sort of post apocalyptic.
The alive parts should alternate between plain and full of trees and other plant-life.
I think there should be peanut shaped planets with one side dead and the other alive somewhere.
