I don't like it.

IRC has the advantage that it is entirely autonomous and decentralized. you can decide to run your own server and you only depend on your ISP or server host.

with Discord, your "server" is merely a group that exists within Discord's infrastructure. it's centralized, managed by one big actor. basically, IRC reflects what the internet was originally intended as (open, decentralized), Discord reflects what the internet is becoming (centralized and controlled by a few big entities, like Google, Facebook, etc...).

Discord has no client other than the trendy "embed the web version into an UI-less Chrome" version. hope you like your chat client consuming 300+ megabytes of RAM.

then again maybe in some shitty future 300MB will be considered lightweight.

what does Discord do that IRC doesn't? oh yeah, you can post dumb emoji. cool.

yes you can, it's called a ban
