I made a section of a level although the camera angle makes it essentially impossible to play is it possible to edit camera angles in whitehole? or do I need to use a separate tool?

You can use Whitehole or Dossun2. However, the later one adds any missing fields in the BCAM file.

Would I just use a camera area object, and if so how do I know which way the camera is pointing?

angleB and angleA configure the vertical and horizontal angles, respectively. More information on camera settings can be found here: http://neomariogalaxy.bplaced.net/?page=wiki&id=Cameras

You use the camera area and assign a camera from the bcam file to it. For camera areas this is done with the camera names that are prefixed with "c:"
