Source article: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/12/supervolcano-campi-flegrei-stirs-under-naples-italy/

Based on physical measurements and computer modeling, "we propose that magma could be approaching the CDP [critical degassing pressure] at Campi Flegrei, a volcano in the metropolitan area of Naples, one of the most densely inhabited areas in the world, and where accelerating deformation and heating are currently being observed," wrote the scientists—who are led by Giovanni Chiodini of the Italian National Institute of Geophysics in Rome.

[16:50:27] SnakeBlock: Oh
[16:50:33] SnakeBlock: apparently one of the worlds most dangerous supervolcanoes is rumbling
[16:50:45] SnakeBlock: they say it can affect more than the country it's in
[16:51:00] SnakeBlock: can lead to blockage of air travel for years, extended winters, darkness at day, economic collapse, food shortages etc
[16:51:37] SnakeBlock: im spook

Is it gonna erupt? Is it not? Can't say. There might actually be a chance if it's rumbling, but yea.

First day of the year, all is fine, second day, sudden threat.

[16:52:47] Ika la Squid: is said volcano set to explode evey <yearnumber> years?
[16:52:53] SnakeBlock: no
[16:52:59] SnakeBlock: but it could erupt literally anytime, since they said it's starting to show signs like the way

it's rumbling
[16:53:07] SnakeBlock: there is no predicting it and no helping it
[16:53:14] SnakeBlock: it could be in 20 years, 50, 1000 or even tomorrow

[17:19:06] SnakeBlock: supervolcano rumbling on january 2nd
[17:19:09] SnakeBlock: 10/10
[17:22:26] Ika la Squid: if at least it could bring us some snow in paris it would be nice
[17:22:37] Ika la Squid: except italy is fucking close to france and it's already cold as hell outside so blerp
[17:22:45] SnakeBlock: uh
[17:22:49] SnakeBlock: if italy is close to france
[17:23:00] SnakeBlock: it's a supervolcano. it can have a massive range.
[17:23:18] SnakeBlock: the natural disaster part itself COULD reach france.
[17:23:24] SnakeBlock: like the 'destroys fucking everything' part
[17:23:49] *** Ika la Squid runs ***

[17:24:17] SnakeBlock: "So the solution to Global Warming is a volcano causing Global Cooling!"
[17:24:19] SnakeBlock: lol
[17:24:25] Ika la Squid: pfft
[17:24:47] Ika la Squid: we've been talking about global warming for ages
[17:24:55] Ika la Squid: and suddently, the opposite
[17:25:34] Ika la Squid: in the middle of winter
[17:25:36] Ika la Squid: much fun, guaranteed
[17:25:50] SnakeBlock: also, prolonged winters in and of themselves

[17:28:19] Ika la Squid: and the best part is
[17:28:32] Ika la Squid: you can't just go panic or prepare in any way because it may not happen at all
[17:28:56] SnakeBlock: indeed

[17:29:15] SnakeBlock: its rumblign

This has been known since 2016, actually. It's in Italy, and according to scientists, people shouldn't be fearing yet because volcano science is very uncertain. I think the window they allocate for it erupting is still a big window, but again, they say people shouldn't panic yet. Right now, scientists are just inviting other scientists to keep close watch on it.

Didn't scientists also say that it's incredibly unlikely to happen in our lifetime? This shouldn't be causing any panic, shit like this makes the news every few months.

I think they did.

In all honesty, I'm not excepting much to happen, but I wonder how things would turn out if it did. Plants would die, famine would strike, and this would be a death sentence to absolute vegetarians.

fearmongering. the people who are worrying about that shit are being distracted away from the actual issues.

They do have a reason to worry, but not to panic.

This isn't like WMDs or whatever.

Well, this isn't something we need to worry about and if it does happen within our lifetime, there isn't anything we can do to prevent it from happening.

Unlike, y'know, a very particular climate issue that our current government will happily ignore because they think scientists are shilling or their reports are extremely flawed even though none of them are climate scientists.
