It's a student orchestra, so I doubt he has much access to it. But if he tells us how he got such good-quality recording we could try doing similar things at our schools and see if people would voluntarily join. I know that there are a lot of orchestra and band people at my school. ____________________ |AgentSplaturn| if someone uses an external hard disk to store porn on |AgentSplaturn| is it their sex drive? And I am curious, what do you play? If you could arrange a piece for your band/orchestra, that would be excellent ____________________

This was a one-time deal, unfortunately. My teacher arranged the recording, and I'm lucky to have gotten this performed at all. Personally, I don't think the mistakes would be too noticeable underneath the sound of textboxes and other environmental noise. I'm glad I got to do this, though, it makes me realize just how much work and effort the original composers put into the galaxy.
The teacher had this really nifty and horribly expensive device to get such a nice recording. I forget what it's called, I could ask, but it's in the $1000 range. I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but I don't think it'll be easy to get much in the way of orchestral recordings for this project. You need arrangers, performers, and probably lots of money or influence. If any of you can procure an orchestra, however, I'd be happy to arrange music, and make PDFs of full scores and parts for all instruments. |

So you can't get any more recording sessions? It'd be really nice if we could at least have a few of the major tracks orchestrated. ____________________ |AgentSplaturn| if someone uses an external hard disk to store porn on |AgentSplaturn| is it their sex drive? Posted by Peckman You're sure you can't get it again? It would be awesome if at least a couple of the major pieces were orchestrated. Sorry, another full session just ain't gonna happen. But, if some of you guys have decent microphones of some kind, and can play instruments, a few live solos can really spice up an otherwise all-synth piece. I think that's probably the best approach. I myself can play piano somewhat, but that's an instrument that's easier to just synthesize, to fix mistakes later.
I mean, some of the best themes in the games have only one or two live instruments (teresa waltz, puzzle plank) and a lot are entirely electronic. |

Yeah but there are always those couple main tracks that are amazing orchestral. My suggestion is, you should tell her about the project. If you can, and she would allow you to do a piece (with lots of practice) it would be much appreciated. VERY much appreciated. ____________________

What can I say, for that kind of sound you're gonna have to reuse old themes from the original games. Some versions from Mario and Sonic at the Olympics series utilize an orchestra well; I saw you already used their fantastic arrangement of the main theme in the trailer (though it is just live brass and a string quartet.) The Winter games has a nice arrangement of Good Egg galaxy with full orchestra, and the London one has an a cool arrangement of the Dino Piranha theme with live brass and electric guitars.
All I'm saying is, as much as I'd love an orchestra at my disposal, that's just not possible in the near future. My school's orchestra and other groups are all busy, and while I am trying to foster good relationships with everyone I know related to it, I can't just ask 40 or 50 people for a favor, and to pay them would be quite expensive, and even if I could I have a feeling that the orchestra just doesn't work that way. I think it would be good to figure out which of us can play instruments and have a mic of some kind. It'd be a lot easier to get a nice recording in a small room with only one player to worry about, and single instruments can really make a huge difference. Heck, lot's of professional games can't even get recording session in for their soundtracks. Then we'd mix it in with the synth orchestra and some electronic effects, and it'd sound pretty good. |

That would be awkward to do, but now I want to get at least the major tracks with real instruments ____________________ |AgentSplaturn| if someone uses an external hard disk to store porn on |AgentSplaturn| is it their sex drive? You guys are really pushing him xP
It's not easy to have a band play what you want However, if somebody wants to, we could have a very well written staff roll for a band. Why I suggest this is because I got recommended for Winds Ensemble next year in my school, which is pretty much honors band. I've heard the current ensemble play, and I have to say they are pretty good. My point is that if I can get a very nice sounding piece for a full band (unfortunately no strings), there's a chance that my director would consider it. Difficulty wouldn't be a major issue since it's winds ensemble. Also, it would require a midi recording with the exact same band arrangement as the ensemble so I could show my director what it would sound like. If it's a decent piece with accurate difficulty, there would be a good chance it would be played at the concert. Therefore, it would be practiced a lot, and could easily be recorded (we have the equipment) However, if we do plan on doing this, we should start soon, because the staff roll is the best piece in the game |

Well, I've already arranged for orchestra and dabbled in band, maybe over the summer I can try a band arrangement. Also, I am going to go ahead with some changes to the Toad brigade recording- I can at least add some synth and make it loop properly, and see how it sounds then. (Perhaps cut out the second verse, though I'm still not sure it's that much of a problem to have one or two wrong notes.) Do you guys have any recommendations for galaxy-sounding synths? I've been working so much with sheet music lately I'm rusty on the electronic end of production, though I plan to master logic over the summer as well.
Also, on an unrelated note, what are your thoughts on the Mario and Sonic arrangements? I'm biased, I admit as a huge fan of Sega's sound team as well, but I also think their relegation to a dumb party game would allow them to sound fresh in a proper, galactic context. Besides the arrangement used in the trailer, this one stands out as fantastic, if Good Egg galaxy in any way reappears. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AgNnPoa8YQ Also there are Dino Piranha and Puzzle Plank remixes with live performances as well. I am assuming due to the difficulty in making new bosses that Dino Piranha will appear? Apologies if I'm barking up the wrong tree with those, if you want all new music or don't want to borrow from past games or they just don't work. I just love the arrangements. |

got bored while teaching piano today, started writing a composition in my head unfortunately its only finished in my head, but i grabbed about 30mins to start transcribing it, i thought of you guys because i thought, hey this work would nice as a sort of "anticipating a boss fight" road to bowser type track, tell me what you think? is this the sorta style you want, wasnt sure about drums or using orchestral perscussion, but i thought back to that bowser track from n64 and thought.. hey.. bowsers clearly a drummer!! http://tindeck.com/listen/suea |

Wow, that's really great! I love the piano writing, and the build in energy. To nitpick, I'd say I'm not sure about the sound of the drums. Maybe either a subtler and/or more electronic sound would work better for those? They're a little hyper and maybe too poppy for an anticipation theme imo. Also, how would it loop?
(I feel bad saying about the drums since I can't write percussion for crap, so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt.) |

mate, i heard what you mean too, i like the drums but the build up its abit strange, ive alredy wrote the rest i havent transcripted it yet though, basically the string backing does something similar and the piano chord progression is essentially the same but im going to play with the texture abit, using different shape arpeggios, the piano is the main part,im a pianist, but i did want some backing for this, as piano alone sounds abit bare, though im willing to try it, see how it works, might give it a sense of forboding like the mario64 final boss theme thats basically just organ!, i will finish this, but it was mostly just to test the water, to see if you guys like the style that i write, etc. and dont worry about criticism im really not one of those guys who gets all pissed off about advice, opinions etc lol |

I wasn't sure when it started but, I have to say I absolutely love it! It will be an asset to have you on the team with such high quality compositional skills and instrumentation
(I'm Geo, by the way. I don't think we've met yet Welcome! ) I'm not sure exactly where it would fit... mainly because it's so upbeat but with that edgy feel. I don't think that piece in particular could fit... however with skills like that, it's safe to say that at least one of your pieces will be used Very good job (I'd get some advice off the others as well. They help me improve with their criticisms all the time ) |
