Are you secretive about hacking, or do you tell everyone?

For me, I call it "programming", which, I mainly dissect file formats and do other minor stuff that requires writing programs, so that's partially true. Not much else to say other than that.

How about the rest of Kuribo64?

I don't call it hacking, because that word is used to mean illegal stuff too.

I'd call it modding more than hacking. Hacking has a very bad connotation to it, which most people think of hacking someone, or a server or something, whereas modding means modifying files and stuff, the stuff you're actually doing.

I use the word "Hacking", for the most of the time, when I explain people the difference between Hacking and Cracking, they either laugh, or get glowing red heads.

Kinda depends on who I'm talking to.
Parents and acquaintances - Programming
Close friends - Rom hacking

Nobody around me IRL knows about my activities.

Considering their average activities, mine are completely alien, no chance I could exchange about them anyway.

No one really cares. Seriously.

Once you start making software that is useful to them however, you will be praised as a god.

Nobody IRL has takes any interest in any of my interests, so most of the time I don't bother talking about what I do to people. Seems whenever I tell anyone anything personal I feel judgement radiating from them.

Nobody really has any interest in my hobbies :P

@MKGirlism
Cracking isn't really a commonly used term, is it?

It's a vicious circle:
People call everything related to Cyber Crime "Hacking", just because the Media says so.
Just because the Media says so, people call everything related to Cyber Crime "Hacking".
Etc.

'Hacker' is also a more prestigious name.

'Cracker' makes you think of this:

Hacking is the right word for both situations. Although most people in these communities who say they "hack" actually "mod". Since they have never reached an hex editor anyway.

Yeah nobody irl cares about what I do, and when I do I say I play piano.. all day

Being new to hacking I haven't really had to hide it.
But if I had to I would say that I "mod"

Not necessarily, but there's no one that'd be interested in it where I live. If I ever do bring it up, I'd call it "modding" because as other people have stated, the term "hacking" can be interpreted as a bad thing.

We don't really have the hacking/cracking differenciation issues in French. Cracking translates to "pirater" ("pirater un serveur"), the same term is used for piracy ("pirater un film"). Different issue, but atleast the illegal things are together and not mixed with the rest.

There aren't really specific terms for ROM hacking/game modding.

My activities aren't limited to computer related things, btw. I also occasionally do electronics or mess with computer hardware, and help my parents renovate their house. I basically enjoy building things.

Might post about those things if there's enough interest.
