As you know, the board limits spoilers to 7 per post, filters them from signatures, and all sorts of restrictions. I figured, maybe rather than have all that shit, we could rework spoilers to avoid the issues we tried to address.

Here are some possible spoiler styles, with their pros and cons:

Old Acmlmboard style

Basically black text in a black box. Reading the contents requires highlighting (which can be unpractical for certain devices). Doesn't work on images.

Spoiler:
This is an example Acmlmboard spoiler :P

Kafuka

A box with its contents hidden. Hovering over the box reveals the contents. Doesn't work well on mobile browsers.

Spoiler:
This is an example Kafuka spoiler :P

ABXD

Also our current style. A button expanding/collapsing the spoiler box. Cool and all, but often misused due to the click-to-expand mechanic:

* categorizing posts the wrong way (just use bold headings or whatever, don't stick everything into spoilers)
* other wrong ways to 'save' space
* putting a ton of shit in your signature that should go in your bio
* idiots making spoiler pyramids (although that one is rare)

This is... oh well you damn well know what it looks like

New style

A style I thought of, being a cross of the two above. Basically the ABXD spoiler, but when hidden, the box is just made invisible instead of being collapsed. Meaning that hidden spoilers still take space, making users more responsible about the space they take, and less likely to abuse spoilers just for the click-to-expand mechanic.

This is a new style spoiler. :)
Notice how it always takes the same amount of space. (the final one would have a border materializing the spoiler zone, this is just a silly hack)

or whatever else

New style. I like how this spoilers can hide stuff, so you can link images and edit the spoiler header warning that an image is there, as well as other stuff.

Same here. ABXD and New spoilers look the same, at least on mobile.

Don't judge it through mobile.

Not gonna lie, the first two are kinda retarded IMO (not as much Kafuka), as they're finicky on mobile, or even on desktop.

I like the new style better, since people won't be cramming several paragraphs and images into spoilers (well, you could, but it would leave a big gap when unopened).

Plus, having the 7 spoiler limit removed would be nice, cuz bios and hack showcases (see: Super Mario Sunshine 64 DS first post).

They still look the same.

Old:

This
is
a
spoiler
with
a
lot
of
crap
in
it.
New:

This
is
a
spoiler
with
a
lot
of
crap
in
it.
There is a gap in the post with the new spoiler when it is closed and opened (as opposed to expanding the post), which discourages putting a huge section of your post in there.

Hmmmm, I suppose I can pick the new style if adding spoiler images to it wont take up the space, as seeing a huge blank space would be bad.

Or maybe this:

How about the new style is made the default style, and the current style is instead rebranded to an image only spoiler?

As said, a border will materialize the spoiler space, so it doesn't look like a huge blank space, and you know there's something there.

okay well, let's test them

hello, this is a spoiler

this image is dumb

well whatever, seems good :)

so, how is it?

I raised the limit to 16 per post. Might raise it higher and/or remove the filter from signatures.

I don't like that it takes up space. Spoilers are meant to compress.

Spoilers are meant to hide information that users may not want to see. Like spoilers (WARNING SPOILER! BOWSER KILLS PEACH IN NEW SUPER MARIO BROS 4), hence their name.

They weren't invented to artificially compress posts.

IMO that doesn't mean they shouldn't be available for use as such, within reason.

Just a thought, what if the ABXD and new styles were both available, and users who abuse the ABXD style could be stripped of the privilege to use it? (Sorry, I just think it isn't right that everyone should lose the ABXD style because of a few trollish spammers and such, as it has many advantages, when used for images or in bios . _ . )

that's a lot of overcomplication for nothing

Alright, if you say so.

Evidently administrative priorities are less consistent than I thought...

...I've always taken a "users first" attitude on the board I am a moderator on. Is this different, or am I just misunderstanding?

>board is phpBB

how is it to moderate that? last time I moderated a phpBB, I hated it

also, if you think my attitude here is wrong, consider this: implementing two separate spoiler types, when the board can very well only use one considering how seldom spoilers are used anyway (and how most of the uses for the ABXD-style spoiler were crap)

I didn't say your attitude was wrong, merely that I wasn't certain I understood it. That has since changed, as have my thoughts on the matter. Seeing as you have seen more of this board than I have (for obvious reasons), I guess my sample of spoiler uses is just kinda biased :/
(Also, the way you put it made it sound to me like you couldn't be bothered or something. I now see I was wrong to think that.)

Hmm...what if ABXD-style spoilers were used in bios, and the new ones were used in threads and PMs? (IDK if that's even doable, so it's just a thought).

As for phpBB moderation stuff...I quite like it, actually. Bit fiddly, but I definitely prefer it over BlargBoard/NeoBoard (no offense, just an honest opinion ._. ). Admittedly I have nothing else to compare it to, so IDK how much that would actually mean...

same shit, too much trouble for nothing really

does phpBB still require 8 clicks to properly trash a thread?
