Wood Boxes:

You need:
~ 1 ExterminationCheckerWoodBox
~ A lot of boxes
~ 1 PowerStar
~ 1 Gearmo
~ Texts for the Gearmo

Place the ExterminationCheckerWoodBox and give it an unique ObjectId. Give it a SW_A and SW_B switch (e.g. SW_A = 60 and SW_B = 61). Then you place the boxes. Their GeneratorIds must be equal to the ExterminationCheckerWoodBox's ObjectId.
Add a Gearmo and set its obj_arg0 to 0. Obj_arg1 defines the time in seconds. Give it a SW_A and SW_B switch. They have to be the same as the ExterminationCheckerWoodBox's switches (e.g. SW_A = 60 and SW_B = 61). Give the Gearmo texts as well.
Place the PowerStar and give it a CameraSetId. Open the scenario file and set the AppearPowerStarObj to パマタリアン. You're done!

Can this be used to make a different object appear, such as a launch star, and, do you have to have a Gearmo or can it be a different switch?

It's programed to give you a Power Star, so, no. Unless you ASM hack it.
