ROM hacking in general isn't dying imo, but rather becoming a retro thing as I said.

Sucks for me though. IMO the most interesting part in ROM hacking is when you break into the game, modify stuff, and make tools. What is next is tons of noobs doing stupid shit and calling it hacks, and eventually a few individuals/teams making real hacks depending on the difficulty.

Well, there's still the possibility that Mario Maker could help SMG hacking, or other games. Because it's limited, people might want to make bigger things and possibly move on to other games...

I'm just doing it for fun, really.

Being one of like five people to actually have custom SMG levels makes it even more avant-garde and impressive to other people. I would be happy even if I was the only one making levels for my own use.

Why do you care if there's a "scene" or not? Just do it, or don't do it. It's not important.

'Why do I care if there's a scene or not'

uh, I've been doing this for 4 years, and this is something I love to do? Maybe?

I don't see how that's really related? You don't really need a scene to make a hack :s

No, but the presence of a scene generally helps motivation a lot.

Why bother making a good SMG editor when only 5 people will be using it, and I'm not even one of them?

bleh, well I get that people still like SMG hacking, I get that 3dw will probably never get fully hacked to any extent, but imo the other points I made should still be considered to look at. But you guys are indeed right.

And how many of those actually made a full level?

For the record, swapping files and textures around isn't really hacking.

Though texture hacking, interestingly, is what got me into the SMG hacking scene in the first place.

I was mostly talking about GalaxyHacker's threads.

Sure, it's interesting, but it's no big achievement. People have been able to do that since the release of Wiiscrubber, and maybe before even.

I think 10, but it's probably more and many of them has levels in progress or haven't released any. But note, I use Whitehole 28 days in the month and the thing that I almost never do is to create an "level". It has been almost one year for me here and I have just wanted to create 5 levels until now. The most less things I do is to create levels. Why do they need to create levels because they're using it? They use it to edit the game and maybe do levels.

Well it's still an edit on the game and that's the point.

No, it's modding. Not hacking.

I still don't see what the point of this thread is.

Sure, some these things exist. But they always have, and what difference does it make to have them in bold font now?

I've been following this thread so I thought i'd throw my hat in the ring. I really don't see difficulty as an issue, because (to me anyway) its not really an issue. The issue is laziness. If someone wants to hack mario galaxy they need to put effort into doing it, it not like some other games where you can just click one or two buttons and there is your model, imported for you with ease, while in mario galaxy you need to go through the process of using obj2bdl, then use the collision generator to make a kcl pack it into an arc etc, etc, etc. Really its not that hard, it just takes longer, and I know some people are going to say "well what about noobs who have never done it before, it can be hard for them to do it" well if they did some reading on the forums here they would find some really helpful tutorials on how to import models and things of that sort. On top of that, they can even ask questions to get help if they are getting stuck. So its not really hard, its more intermediate and some people not willing to put in the effort to learn how.
