The Power Star could on a squigly line-shaped moon. A sign on the moon tells you that the pirates' treasure is on the moon. Two Octupuses coukd be blocking a treasure and you have to kill them with a Green Shell.

Eh, personally I think treasure chests could be better used here, in general, since this IS based on pirates, which makes sense.
It makes even more sense since treasure chests are also found in water levels, and this is based on that.

Since Glem's concept art has broken ships, that would be the best to use the treasure chests.

Edit: Broken ship parts could also be scattered all over moons, fused moons, irregular moons, etc.

Nice job! I like the moon idea, the lunar idea, it couldn't have been any more awesome because of that!
