Yesterday I picked up copies of Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie at a market. They were in physically crappy condition, but had never been played. Dirt cheap, too.

I doubt they had never been played on. Perhaps the battery that saves the game is already dead, or they deleted the saves before they went up for sale :v

It happened to me when I got SMAS+SMW on the SNES; the battery was dead.

Well, for one thing the first thing that happened when I started them was the game asking me to set the language/sound settings. Save files were all blank

I thought at first it was from the battery too, but I tested that by getting a Star in Mario 64 and turning off the console. When I turned it back on the save file was still there.

I'm not sure, but I think there is a language option for the PAL version of SM64. That would explain why you got that screen, since I believe Australia is one of the PAL regions.

Yup, the PAL version has a language option. English, German and French are available.

Yes, but it only asks you to set the default language when you play it for the first time.
