Welp, custom level making isn't a fringe thing anymore.

Mario Maker is a game that basically lets you make your own 2D Mario levels with a Reggie-like interface. They can be played with classic SMB or the NSMBU graphics. What amazes me is how versatile this tool is. I expect to see some kind of fanbase pop up over this.

I bet a million bucks they'll have limitations on what you can place.

Theres no object limit. But this is not for level design.
The creator of mario maker said to now view it as a level creation tool, more like to have fun.

Now, watch millions of kaizo levels :P

Oh, and its really limited, so you can make a decent level design at best, even though its not the focus of it.

This. It's just too easy to make a kaizo level, and it's too to make a decent, original level.

Well, I'm really looking forward to this since I want to make my own NSMBU levels. (And they'll be hard :D)

Their trailer.

It looks limited in what it can do. Which means that at best it'll give unofficial ROM hacking a boost from people looking up ways to do more ini-depth customization. At worst, I don't foresee it hurting our scene.

Keep in mind they will probably add more features before release.

Sure, but they want to keep it usable for everybody, including kids. And there's also that SMB style thing.

Basically, it will stay limited in what it can do, which is a rather good thing for us.

Why is it a good thing for us? We don't really do New Super Mario Bros. hacking, unless you do.

It stays limited, so people will want more, so they'll come here.

NSMBW hacking is one of the (if not the) largest Wii hacking subgroup out there.

It is.

When I first saw mario maker im like, wat. Then I understood it wasn't meant to be a full on level designer like we want, but more for a casual audience, who may feel a bit inspired, buy this app, and then use it once or twice in their life times. But IMO, the wii u gamepad could be so effective and productive to make any level, 2D and maybe even 3D!

It is defiantly the largest Wii hacking group. My favorite hack is proably Newer.

I meant us ROM hackers in general, not this board in particular.

They actually said more graphics stiles and sprites will be added. And that you will be able to compose your music like in mario paint.

lol ofc, dlc. Just watch it be like 2 dollars for koopa pack, 2 more for theme packs, 2 more for platform pack, 2 more for hazards pack, and add them up and it's a great sell for Nintendo, all packs + app will probly end up costing like $30, which will be bought by every hardcore mario fan.

They didn't. That was his prediction for DLC if it actually is released for this game. (DLC is very likely though…..)

And let's not forget that it can't become insanely complex either. It has to remain easy to use for kids. Which means, maybe stuff like activators will be in, but nothing more complex than that.
