Seeing that no one else appears to have had much success importing custom music, I feel obligated to provide this explanation.
First, here are the programs and files you will need. If any of them become unavailable at some point, inform me and I will upload them elsewhere.

SM64DS Music Files: https://kuribo64.net/get.php?id=Vxx3g5yoKOnvfW8h
NSMBe: http://nsmbhd.net/download/
VGMTrans: http://filetrip.net/nds-downloads/utilities/download-vgmtrans-92909-f27960.html
DeSmuME: http://desmume.org/download/

You will also need a program for editing midis. I have omitted the download link for Cakewalk Home Studio as it is pirated software. A free alternative to consider would be Musecore.

Now, on to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kT3S6CTilG0

Any further questions may be asked in this thread.

can you use every instrument in the game? or is it like mario 64 that you have different sound packs for each music?

Each sequence is limited to the sounds contained within its corresponding SWAR file/s. You can use Tinke to listen to each individual sound and manually replace the sounds in a hex editor. I plan on looking into changing which SWAR is loaded for a sequence.

How can I use VGMTrans? I have a Side by Side error, if I start VGMTrans. Need I Visual Studio Express?

I've been investigating this, and it seems as if there are a few "hiccups" when it comes to the above method, as well as a few answered questions regarding the process in general:

1. The provided files do not work. Not only does it rename each sequence/sound bank & co, but it's also missing several files. By renaming the files with added numbers (1, 2, 3...), the game fails to recognize any sound input and screams back at you with a horrid buzz sound. Entire files are missing as well, the "editor.exe" included is unable to export entire files for whatever reason (NCS_BGM_VOCAL.sseq, for example, is not exported or in the download either).

2. Numbering is also wrong. Related to the above somewhat, the numbering of files doesn't seem to match the actual data either, since files are missing and it seems that files are re ordered after being exported.

3. No further explanation beyond replacing music. There simply seems to be no explanation for what exactly needs to be placed where, and how. For instance, if you view the SDAT file directly, view the music data in a level, and count the files manually to determine their ID, you'll see that the IDs of the sequences and soundbanks match - However, this is not the case for the SWAR. The editor says:

(SWAR entry address - 4)/4

Is that the SWAR entry minus 4 divided by 4? Through 4 slash 4?

I'm not sure what was used in the tutorial, but I'm running this with a European rom and I can't seem to get anything to work other than swapping music via copying from another level.

SuperMario64DS: The included files work fine, you should be able to use editor.exe to build a new SDAT file and replace the original without noticing any difference.

There is a full guide to hacking DS music here:

koopatroop: You could try N64 Midi Tool for N64 games.

When I try to convert a midi in midi2sseq, I keep getting a message saying that libgcc_s_dw2-1.dll is missing from my computer. Anyone know how to fix this? I'm using Windows 7, by the way.

Just search for the file on google and you'll find a download somewhere.

I've been having a fuss about with this and have gotten some pretty good results. Here's one track that turned out almost perfectly: https://soundcloud.com/ascending-1/donkey-kong-64-ds-dk-isle

Incredible! How'd you get the tracks to play within the game? I just get silence on mine...Seems you've also been able to edit the sound effects as well! I've been using Anvil Studio for the MIDI editing software.

Have you made sure that all the instruments are the same as the original file?

I guess I can show some stuff I've made as well here since everyone else seems to do so;

http://www.mediafire.com/listen/zttt0eze5stah2k/stardustspeedwaypast.mp3

http://www.mediafire.com/listen/fv8ecb3cwrwixs0/blueresort.mp3

http://www.mediafire.com/listen/ldu32yvdws01al7/greengarden.mp3

While none of those are recorded in game they sound exactly the same there. The first two have problems with too big SWAR files though.

That most likely has to do with the size of your SSEQ being to big. It shouldn't be any bigger then ~9kb or it wont play. Try to keep it even under 8kb if it's possible

Oh, I meant nothing by it other than I was proud to have had the track come out that well :p
