Well, if there were many meteors and Magmaarghs and other stuff flying everywhere, it wouldn't be too easy.
But yeah, the flying Mario part will have to be short, if in Star 1. If it's in Star 2 though, Mario could "refuel" at a few Starshrooms scattered through the level, I guess.

I mean, starting in the middle of the course? But oh well.

Anyway, is there any way to add an enlarged windmill as an obstacle? :P

...I don't quite get this.
Airships were the most common...any other kind of ship was kinda rare.
I'd like it to be more like the Dreadnought. Giant freaking ship right there.

Maybe a part of the stage should be running through a munitions factory-full of Bullet Bill launchers of all types, plus a few Undergrunt Gunners. As long as Mario keeps running, it wouldn't be too hard, as they are not too fast and will explode against each other.
It's kinda like the "roomful of Thwomps"- keep running.

I think the first star shouldn't be linear. All the desert levels in the games never let you explore the desert fully, and the machinery would keep it from being boring. Pokeys would be amazing there. Like, first a bit of exploring for the key and a pipe outside, then a bit of platforming inside the crumbled factory (still mostly "outdoors", as it should be just ruined brick walls left).
Sand/mechanical exploration to mechanical/sand platforming.

Hmm, yeah...but not too many, because they give a castle/Bowser/mechanical vibe, you know...but yeah.
Spheres/cubes of water in lava spheres? Spheres and cliffs of lava in water spheres?
o.0 Clear lava? o.0 o.0 o.0 What's that supposed to be?
Not sure how boiling water would work...maybe like the freezing water of Baron Brr's Frozen Peak? But probably not.

This galaxy should focus more on platforming and atmosphere. Cliffs, jagged rocks, bones everywhere.
It would be interesting to have a slight fog effect and have absolutely no enemies in the first half of the first star, just to freak players out. :P

I don't think there should be any sand theme. Pure mechanical, you know. Oh wait, did you mean the moving sand collision?
Anyway, I just thought the background and puzzles of Lanayru fit the description. More like the "ancient/past" version.

(BTW, Lanayru had a sand/mechanical/mine/puzzle theme, plus a time gimmick which changed the conditions of an area around some time related artifacts, changing it to a non dusty, non broken, powered up version of the landscape, ruins->mechanical, desert->grass. Owait...that sounds more like Temporal Tumble...and I'm going on and on. Stopping now.)

That picture's...weird and slightly creepy for some reason. But I don't see how to add a "reference" to that...Hmm...
Edit: well, the only thing that comes to mind is that common warping clock animation in other games...blarg, can't think of how to describe it. Never mind.

Does a Star 1 like this work?: Peaceful lake (like nighttime Cosmic Cove)--> Small underground water passage-->Electrified lake (finding a key to the satellite?)--> Star inside satellite

Umm...wouldn't clear lava look exactly like water?

I'd like it if there was a swirling blackness beyord EotU, and maybe EotU and Gliding Inferno should be A LOT farther away from Final Frontier, to make it seem like really the Edge of the Universe.
Maybe not, but anyway, I don't think Gliding Inferno should be a "detour". It would let players skip Final Frontier...and that's supposed to be the typical Bowser final boss castle.
I like the world map. It has progression: water, grass, metal--> lava --> Bowser's army --> Edge of the Universe

Maybe,
First planet- a large planet with several active volcanoes, with the space between being a single sphere of magma covered with a layer of water, with meteors and a fog effect. Loads of steam geysers if possible.

I'd like an actual factory, with a background similar to Lanayru's (indoors, but it's so huge it might as well be outdoors). Chompworks was nowhere near a factory.
