Posted by MercuryPenny Obviously you don't understand that different people have different opinions. Don't generalize hypocritical behavior to everyone. It's simple. Some people like things one way, some people like another. So if it means the most popular format is the one that continues to be explored (while the other gets thrown into the trash), then people on both sides of the discussion have to be as vocal as possible. There's nothing hypocritical about that- it's just like politics. What needs to be done to correctly resolve this situation and satisfy everyone equally, is for both parties to be catered to in equal amounts. Now here's the way I see it- if people want to play a generic Mario platformer that holds on to the same formula, they already have thirteen games to play, and additionally, eleven remakes. For those who want to play a more complex Mario platformer that sticks to it's own conventions, they have four, along with one remake. That's not equal. |

I wasn't expecting a new Mario game any time soon, but I'm still disappointed that neither the 3DS or Wii U really has a signature console-defining Mario game like past generations (all the way back to the NES) have had.
2015 marks the 30th Anniversary of Super Mario Bros., so why they aren't doing anything to celebrate it (excluding Mario Maker) I'll never understand. Though I can't say I'm surprised, they botched the 25th Anniversary too by slapping a SNES game on a Wii disc and charging $40 (AU) for it. Commemorative Anniversaries only ever happen every 10 or 25 years. There's not going to be another until the 40th. |

Posted by GreenThunder1337 Those games didn't really define a generation, they're just standard Mario games. Nothing groundbreaking like every single generation beforehand. |

I'd like to wish everybody a happy E3 2015, and I have something for the special occasion: a new trailer!
The Nintendo Digital Event is starting in precisely two hours, so here's a little something to get hyped. And on top of that, some new images! |

Posted by Stygmax Not in-game, but I will include a full map of the game in the download pack. Posted by GreenThunder1337 They're collectible, if you have a Star to swim through the poison water instead of bouncing on the Wigglers. |

Posted by Hiccup Hmm. I just checked myself and it killed me. That was an oversight. But I swear I've been able to swim through poison water at some point. |

Not a great E3. Star Fox was the only big new title, but it's not a series I'm really interested in.
I am happy about Tri Force Heroes (although that's just a glorified version of Four Swords) and Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, but there wasn't anything else that really grabbed my attention. That Metroid thing showed how out of touch Nintendo is. They obviously don't understand their audience anymore. Too many of the games were just small B-listers. Tri Force Heroes, those two Animal Crossing games, "Metroid", even Super Mario Maker- it's just a level editor. We've had those for decades. Not all big games are good, and not all good games are big, but the bigger the game, the more value it holds, and the more people are satisfied when the content of that game delivers. Last year we had Smash and Mario Kart. What have we gotten that's on that same level for this year? I keep thinking about what the Wii U's lacking where most past consoles at least had one of- Zelda, Mario RPG, Metroid, Classic 3D Mario, F-Zero (even though it also skipped the Wii)... and it doesn't seem like that's going to happen. Maybe Zelda will come out on the Wii U... but it'll probably be another Twilight Princess situation. It's a bleak future for the Wii U. |

Posted by Kinnay ... Here's a list of things you can do in Super Mario Maker that you can't do with rom hacks: -On-the-fly "play the level as you're designing it" interface. Here's a list of things that Super Mario Maker can not do that rom hacks can: -Longer levels. -Custom graphics. -Custom music. -Custom enemies. -Custom platforms. -Custom world maps. -Slopes -Pretty much anything that Super Mario Maker doesn't cover. The game has some impressive new additions, but you're working with such harsh constraints that it doesn't reach anything close to the level of creativity and originality that can be done with simple ROM editing tools. Anything is possible with rom hacks. Also, with rom hacks, you can publish full games. With Super Mario Maker, you can share four at a time online. |

That's a respectable presentation, but only because it added the pre-E3 announcements that made everyone think that Nintendo had bigger plans for their bigger show. |

Posted by GreenThunder1337 Nintendo advertises Mario games? Shocker. That doesn't mean that any of the recent Mario games have had that same kind of influence on their console and fan base. I mean, Super Mario Bros. didn't just sell the NES- it was instumental to the future of video gaming. Super Mario World was a big deal for the SNES, which at the time was being publicly labelled as a gimmick and an exploit of consumers. Super Mario 64 kept the N64 afloat as well, and it pioneered the 3D platformer. New Super Mario Bros. was responsible for single-handedly reviving 2D platformers. Super Mario Galaxy is where motion-controlled gaming and precision platforming really worked for the first time. What did 3D Land do? Or NSMB2? Or NSMBU? Or 3D World? They sold moderately well, but they contributed nothing to the video game industry. You could say that 3D Land saved the plummeting reputation of the 3DS, but that was also in part to Mario Kart 7 releasing at the same time- which is a proven system seller. Since 3D World did nothing for the Wii U while Mario Kart 8 earned it a million sales in two weeks, I'd say that t'was Mario Kart 7 that saved the 3DS. |

Just in case people think I'm hating on Super Mario Maker- I'm not. It looks fun, and is an interesting way to celebrate thirty years of Mario platformers. I'm definitely getting it. I just find it inferior to the tools that you can get for free online.
Also: Anyone tried out the custom levels in various Mario vs. Donkey Kong games? The highest rated ones are always terrible. Either they're stupidly easy, or automatic and useless to play. I made a legitimately challenging level in Minis on the Move that got a community rating of 1/3 Stars, meanwhile there was a level that was literally just a straight line and it got 3/3. |

Posted by MercuryPenny Alright, this will be my last post offtopic, because I feel like I'm being singled out and made out to be like some kind of ignorant asshole just because I want to get more out of my Mario games. Notice how I didn't add those game in my list? Because those games didn't contribute anything. I'm not afraid to say that. But you know what? Four games between 89-04 that meant nothing compared to six games between 09-13 that meant nothing- is a big difference. There hasn't been a steady stream of Mario games lately that have had any significant influence, while in the past it has occurred for about every second game. Now I'd like to thank the people who decided to hijack the thread because they like to tell me I'm a dickhead. |

Posted by MercuryPenny Are you implying that that is what I was doing? I just re-read the posts I made, and I don't believe I gave off that vibe. I like those games. I made a post about how I want another big Mario game and I got attacked for it. It's that simple. |

Nice! I've got another one for you, something that I do in my spare time to stay sharp. I call it 'Endurance Smash'.
-1-vs-1 -Final Destination or Omega stage -These items only: Heart Container, Maxim Tomato, Food, Fairy Bottle, set to high frequency if on Wii U -Launch Rate set to 0.5 -One stock It's not a hard challenge, but that doesn't mean it's not a challenge. The longest match I've had with this setup lasted about 40 minutes. The shortest was under one minute. |
