You're not wrong about that much - as of 1809, File Explorer doesn't even work with the Classic Theme enabled. Good thing third-party alternatives exist.

True. But Microsoft seems to be trying to out-Apple Apple in that regard, so expecting them to suddenly pull a 180 and do that is...a bit unrealistic, if you ask me.

even in Win7 it's a trainwreck, most of the new things look derpy, with some even using hardcoded colors that you just can't change

I won't disagree with you on that much. Still though, it does yield performance improvements on Windows 8+, since it can be enabled alongside DWM. Not so consistently on 7 though.
