So this is rather pathetic but I'm trying to learn whitehole/level creation so I've been doing some tests. So currently I've made a little progress on this rather pathetic Flip Swap edit. I'm testing with dolphin and everything works just fine (I can't test on the wii because I don't have one up at school). I'll be posting more as I figure out more parts of whitehole. Expect a launch star and some gravity.

This galaxy looks amazing in my opinion.

Some suggestions though:
-Turning on some ambient occlusion so make the textures look a bit better
-Stems would help making the ground seem less empty, Some smaller flower patches and piranha plants might help as well.
-More sunny background (same as agent)

For the other planets a more flat approach might help. Look at the old Yoshi Star Beta footage from the SMG2 e3 trailer for some inspiration (but more flower platforming)

Well I finished my Flip-Swap Galaxy. I think it turned out pretty well. Its relatively difficult (requires longjumps and some timing)

Some problems that will be fixed in v1.1
-Green Star 2 and the Purple Coin Star being impossible
-Green Stars that have not been moved
-Purple Coins that have not been moved
-The obvious skip in the last section
-Better Cameras (might be in a v1.2)

Hello everyone, it’s been a while,

It sure looks like SMG hacking has been going strong in the past couple months. Something you might notice is missing is the old SMG2.5 team. Our absence has not been because we aren’t doing any work but because we’ve been hard at work on our own little project. This project is a one world full blown SMG2 hack. We’ve got designs and models for 7 galaxies and 20 Stars, as well as 20 green stars. With all that complete we’ve been working on texturing all the models, importing, and then creating the levels themselves. All of these galaxies are based on ideas from the original 2.5 project.

Here’s a sneak peak at all the galaxies being used:
-Sky High (3 Stars)
-Coastline Cavern (3 Stars)
-Retro Remix (3 Stars)
-Toxic Terror (3 Stars)
-Whitehot (Cosmo’s Lava Level) (2 Stars)
-Solar Coaster (2 Stars)
-Bowser Junior’s Trembling Towers (2 Stars)

Here is a brief teaser we made for the project:

Here are some features of this demo:

A brand new world map!
-Brand new models!
-New music!
-Retextured Bosses!
-Custom Text for NPCs, World Map, and Stars!
-Custom Credits!
-Return of the Red Star and Ice Flower!

Here are all the people we’ve got working on the demo right now
-Cosmological (Models, Textures, Co-Creator)
-Agent000 (Models, Music, Co-Creator)
-MrRean (Level Creation, Model importing, music importing, tweaker)
-Stomatol (Modeling, Texturing)
-Splitzwirez (Importing, Level Creation)
-Jjesss (Modeling, Texturing)
-Paperplateismguy (Modeling, Texturing)
-Marionumber1 (Programming)

So we’ve got a lot done on this demo but we still need help. If you can do UV texturing well show us an example of your work and we’ll let you texture some models. If you are good with whitehole and level creation we will let you work on any unfinished level.

Also we really want to get scrolling textures to work for water, lava, and poison. Hopefully we will get those working by the time we release the final project.

We’re hoping for a release date before the summer is over, but no promises. Texturing is one of the most time consuming aspects of making a level, and was part of the reason why the original project was cancelled, so we need as many texturers as possible.

Here are some pictures of other levels that will be used in this project.

Well I hope you guys like everything you’ve seen. If you want to talk to us we’re on the SMG2.5 IRC.

Stay tuned!

As far as I know this has nothing to do with the 2.5 demo. We had already pre-picked all the levels for that demo before this thread was made. This is probably a community oriented hack to get something out there other than the 2.5 team's effort.

No, he means the XML patch.

Also, MN1 already said why the PAL wouldn't work, and how he would get it to work

I'll make the world map, if someone isn't doing that already.

The world map is already completed.

Is there a pic of that somewhere, also, we are going to need to have minigalxy icons as well, If those haven't been discussed already

We already made custom galaxy icons, the only thing we need is the custom banners for the levels. We will be able to provide a screenshot of the world map on monday when I can get back on my desktop.

Happy Progress Day!

From now on we'll be posting the first planet of every galaxy on this thread when it is textured and imported.

We've just recently completed Sky High so here is a sneak peak at its first planet

The pipe actually makes sense given the design of the stars, the galaxy is more of a sewer level than anything else.

And we will be making slight modifications to the icons with vertex colors etc to make it look better than what it is now.

Well I'm back at school now. Due to some problems with the network I'm able to access the forum but not the IRC, so I won't be there for a while (hopefully the problem will be fixed in the next day or I'll be extra POed).

If you need me I can reply to PMs or comments on my profile.

Well I just finished up Beowulf today, pretty good book considering it was passed down orally through generations before being written down and translated into modern english after miraculously surviving a library fire. Its pretty funny how many of the names Tolkien had for Lord of the Rings are just directly from old english like I believe that Boromir is just King in modern english, and Ent is giant. Also the last section of the story is pretty much the Hobbit.

Another really good book I read was called Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrel. Its an extremely long book, around 900 pages, and written in the style of Victorian English novels. Its about magic and I absolutely loved it and it was super absorbing. If you have a spare month I'd strongly recommend it.

Another good book I read was called The Secret History. I don't know how it was a good book because I hated every character and every aspect of the book. Its a pretty tough book to get though, mainly because of how revolting it is, but there is a lot of good to be taken out of it.

Given that there isn't much text in the demo, it shouldn't be too much of an issue for it to be translated into other languages. I want this to reach as wide an audience as possible and the more languages would work well for that.

Also sorry if this post makes no sense I've been extremely sleep deprived for the past 2 weeks and my writing skills have been declining because of it.

The problem you might be having with only one texture in blender is that you can only have one "texture" per material, so to add more textures you need to add more materials and apply them to the correct parts of the models.

On a more general note, I would completely recommend blender as a modeling program, it is so powerful and being able to use it is great for more than just modeling. For example I've been doing a bunch of CAD work for class in blender as well as video editing. It does have a steep learning curve but in the end its all worth it. Looking back at it I wish I had learned Blender in the first place.

So in my college apps it asked me what I do in my spare time, so I'm writing about SMG2.5.

The only problem is that I only have 100 words to describe it, and the average post I make here has 1000 words describing working on some specific aspect of the game. 100 words isn't that much when trying to describe something important.

I guess I could write something along the lines of "I run a project called SMG2.5. I do 3D Models, and design levels. We don't get anything done. You should totally accept me."

First off great job on the powerup. I can't wait to see what else comes from this. As I mentioned on the IRC a powerup that switches gravity with a shake would open up a ton of level design.

To other people can we just drop the whole release thing. As previously mentioned this powerup doesn't open up any crazy level design and in it's current state it is really hard to get working. So instead of arguing with them about the release you should give them more time to work on something even more gamechanging.

Great job on the new powerup though. I can't wait to see where this goes!

So in Blender there is a mode called vertex paint. Once in that mode press "t" to open up a menu. It should have a brush as well as a color wheel. In that mode you have a brush that you can use to paint the vertices of the model. It is most useful to have a gray scale for it and you paint on the vertices.

You can also have it tint the vertices different using the colors of the color pallet. I don't recommend this one as much. I've only used it for transitions between dirt and rock and BoB and to give a running rust feel in Sky High.

Here's some tips to make your levels look good.
- Shade around any sharp edges or transitions in textures, it helps mask the otherwise very noticeable changes.
- Pick a direction for the Sun to be coming from and shade along every edge that would be shaded normally.
- Do what feels best. If something produces a weird jagged edge don't use ot. A player won't be looking for the utmost consistency especially for a fan made level.

This is absolutely wonderful and will help out a ton with the One World Galaxy Hack. Now knowing that Scrolling textures are possible and have been implemented I think that will give a boost in moral to the 2.5 team.

Great job Jesse on getting this to work!

So after using my laptop for a good 3 and a half years, its decided to BSOD about every hour of difficult use. So I figured it was time to get a new computer, this time I'm building a desktop.

So my case arrived today, the Corsair Air 240. It's one of the nicest cases I've seen in person. It's very small and compact for an mATX case so I will be able to expand my build later while still having a nice small computer.

Here's a whole parts list for my build. I'm getting a lot of good deals from Micro Center's Black Friday sales (Its still not even Thanksgiving) so that's why a ton of it is really cheap.
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/rxdVbv

So I'm not completely sure what I should get for the processor. The i5 4670K is probably the best processor for the money right now (especially because its $180 at Micro Center right now), but the i7 4790K is a really good deal at $250. I know the i5 is the best processor for gaming but the problem is that I also want to use Blender, Adobe, and Record and Edit Video and I know that the i7 will help out pretty well in those applications.

So the GPU is the GTX 970. I'm pretty locked down on this, mainly because the insanely low power consumption and massive overclocking headroom. The 980 costs too much more for too little of a performance increase to be worthwhile (even though I love the reference cooler so much). Also because Cycles render in Blender is CUDA based I wanted to go N-Vidia over AMD, although the r9 290x is a pretty good card as well.

I can't wait to put this thing together after Thanksgiving. The processor will be at least two times as good as my laptop and the GPU will be a huge advancement over my laptop and my mom's desktop.

So if there aren't many updates from me its because I'm too afraid to use my laptop because I might just instantly lose all of my progress without warning. So I'll lay low until I get this crazy rig.

Posted on 12-07-14 08:39 PM, in SMG Hacking for Me Right Now [Warning:] [Rant] Link | #52432
Hello everyone, I don’t really want to make this post but something’s been bothering me for a long time now.

First off I want to make it clear that the stuff I say in this post should not be taken personally to any members. This is just me getting something that’s been annoying me off of my shoulders. Usually I don’t try to name people by name, but this time I think I have to.

Secondly I want to say that this doesn’t go for just me. I am aware of plenty of others who are in similar states but with slightly different specifics. I’m just going to tell my part of the story because I know it the best and don’t want to put words in anyone’s mouth.

SMG Hacking for Me Right Now

Well I joined the SMG hacking scene all the way back in February 2011. Ever since I’ve been here I think that I’ve been pushing the quality of designs to new levels. In fact on my first day I made a pretty big change in the scene by making the first deign with complete visuals. I have to admit that it wasn’t the best design, like any first design should be, but at least it changed something in the scene. After I did that I learned Google Sketch-up to make my next designs, which became the first fully 3D Designed level in the scene. Although afterwards my designs weren’t changing anything about the scene after that for a while at least I kept trying and trying to make my designs better until I reached the limit of designs that I considered good with just the objects available to me. Fortunately not that long after I had reached that limit we gained the ability to make custom models and import them. I figured that my skills in Google Sketch-up we no longer good enough for the scene so I learned to use Blender and created one of the first custom planets and then the first fully custom galaxy, Rolling Halfpipe, which ended up never getting finished.

After that, we unfortunately have had a severe lack of texturers, especially when Glem left. So to push the scene along with the best quality of models I learned how to UV texture. Now I’d say that the SMG hacking scene at its best is at the same quality of Nintendo.

So let me get to the rant section of this post(the rest of the post). Can I have a little credit please?! Everything I’ve done for the past 2 years has gotten the same response “good job cosmo”, “nice model cosmo”. I want a little more than that. You have no clue how much those responses aggravate me. Its gotten me thinking that why should I work hard on the levels if I get the same fucking responses as I’ve always gotten. It just shows me that there isn’t really any reason to expand my skill set and keep trying to improve my work, if I’m not getting anything more out of it. I’ll use the most recent case of this as my example.

Take Bob-Omb Battlefield. This is a level that I’ve spent over 30 hours on; making it, tearing it apart, designing it, and looking at how to keep it the same while at the same time making it new and better. It’s an incredibly difficult process. Let me go look at the responses I’ve gotten for my hard work right now.

The model is very nice.

Looks very nice!

I absolutely hate this. It just aggravates me so much. I sure hope it looks nice and I’m aware that it looks nice or else I wouldn’t have posted it. There is plenty of stuff I’ve just thrown out because it wasn’t up to my standard, see my old Toxic Terror and Coastline Cavern models for examples. All I want is more.

These posts aggravate me so much that I miss a post that I would have actually liked to respond to.

Posted by PaperplateismGuy
Wow, how long did it take to make that?

To answer your actual question, which is something I enjoy. It took me 30 hours. I’m sorry I couldn’t get to you sooner. That is a prime example of something I like to see. A question that would get me involved in the conversation. Ask me how I did something, I like explaining my work because at the least someone could learn and make something just as good. A closed remark just doesn’t help me and turns me away from the conversation. Then we can get to the thing that aggravates me even more.

Very nice job Glem!

I’m not Glem. I wouldn’t be upset if this hadn’t happened before. At least take the time to know who did what you are commenting on. I don’t want false praise for anyone. If someone gave me credit for something I didn’t do I would make sure to correct that person’s misconception.

Okay. This is the part of the post I don’t want to write but the events of today have essentially forced me to. There has been a recent member who has been doing a lot of stuff for the SMG hacking scene. This member is Galaxy Hacker. First I’d like to commend him for doing all that he’s done and actually doing stuff.

But secondly I’d like to say that his method of working is completely different than mine. If I’m trying to do something new I’m not going to post every single thing I do unless it’s something new. Take my Flip Swap Level. I started the thread when I had significant progress on the level and didn’t post again until I was done with the level or answering any questions. I’m not going to make threads for something that has already been done. This is one of the reasons that I have such a small post count. I don’t like posting unless it’s something new and good.

A perfect example of a thread that pissed me off so much was the Changing Backgrounds thread. In my opinion its along the lines of “Wow I can delete and add an object in Whitehole”. It wasn’t really revolutionary in my opinion, which is why I didn’t post anything there because I didn’t think I could control myself and stick with my beliefs that admins shouldn’t be abusive to members. Then I saw the next post which was a paragraph of complete praise and how revolutionary it was. This post by the way was probably longer than all of the praise I’ve ever gotten for all of my works combined. All of the “nice job cosmo” add up surprising slowly. My urge to completely rip apart that thread was so great and it took so much self-restraint to not. Fortunately Staple Butter came in and saved the day with his wonderful post. I still remember how relieved I felt when SB posted it. https://kuribo64.net/?page=thread&id=1786&from=20#post50646
Despite what SB said, the response to that post wasn’t the best for me.

As for SMG2.5's modellers and such...I've been unable to find words to describe that stuff. So, it's not that it hasn't been praised as such, it's that it transcends my vocabulary. I don't know if I'm alone in that or not.

I don’t need fucking big words to describe my stuff. I just want more specifics to know that people have spent time to look at the model and questions so others can improve their designing, modeling or texturing abilities. I just want the best for the scene. Describing the models and textures of the work of the SMG2.5 people can be done in simple language.

And the last part of my rant is the current state of custom levels in SMG hacking. The scene has drastically changed since I’ve been here but the quality of levels hasn’t really changed. Levels are still a mismatch of blocks with no consistent theme. Even when I worked with just Nintendo blocks I tried to keep a theme to my levels and make them polished. Although I see no problem with having a pretty jumbled first level I just want to see improvements in one’s designing and level quality. In fact there is a new level which tipped me over the edge today that caused me to start writing this post.

With that new level, it was described as perfect. I didn’t think it was at all. It was a nice showoff that hacking SMG1 is possible and I’m glad the creator says that it isn’t perfect. But please, have some discretion when saying something is perfect or not. If a mismatch mess of blocks is considered perfect, then I’ve got plenty of time to crank out some “perfect” levels. I still have 4 designs from back before we started making custom models for levels that I could sit down and create in Whitehole. So why don’t I do that? It’s because I feel as if I could do a lot more for pushing the scene forward with that time. Instead of spending 24 hours making a couple levels with nothing new, I could instead work on something new like scrolling textures. This is exactly what I’ll do when I have spare time to work on Coastline Cavern.

Why don’t I do the whole process of making a galaxy myself? Because I think that my time could be spent better on other topics. I’m perfectly able to learn how to import models and use the software but why would I want to do that when there are other perfectly competent people on the forum who I can ship the process off to while I work on texturing or modeling some other stuff.

Again I’m sorry for the people who I quoted or talked about in this post. Please don’t take it personally because I don’t mean to personally affect you. I just wanted to provide how I feel about the SMG hacking scene right now.

Also please provide constructive replies to this post. I will restrict your access to this board if you respond “nice post cosmo” and nothing else.
