The main reason why I want to have things be approved before being furthered is so I have an overall idea of what the game will be when it is done. For times when I'm gone I'll try to work on guidelines for approving levels so others can do it as well.

Reasons for this include:
-Prevention of an idea being overused and therefore making the game redundant
-Making sure each galaxy is a new concept and doesn't feel like a direct copy from one of the other galaxy games.
-Making it easier to know what has been done and what hasn't.

MC, not everything is perfect first time and what you are describing in your last post is essentially the approval process.
I want to keep the approving system because of the reasons I listed and not everyone gets a perfect design by revising themselves, it is good for others to review it before we implement it such as me, who has lots of designing experience.
End of discussion, we will keep the approval process but I will make some changes to it so progress can happen while I'm away or busy.

As most of you know, I'm designing this level. Let me give you a brief overview of what i'm planning on doing.

So star 1 is going to go on the 9 holes idea. I'll be mixing in concepts from both miniature gold as well as regular golf (of course with changes to make them more galaxy like). Some plans I have are windmills, holes based off of wii sports and wii sports resort courses. I've already designed 3 of the holes on paper (but a freak thunderstorm destroyed it because it was on my windowsill). I will also be modeling the design that I make..

KoopaNarf I saw your design images. They were pretty awesome and have a lot of potential.

Here is some advice for your design though,
-for the 6 surrounding towers have the starting one be the shortest and have the others be a bit taller than the last.
-To get between the 6 surrounding towers have a unique way for each one. Ex. for the first to the second have basic platforming. the next have advanced platforming, third use a powerup etc.
-I'd like to have a crumbling feel to this galaxy, such as broken tower or broken aspects. Also I think this should be a dark level and have it be creepy.
-Also if you want to model I'd suggest using something like Blender or Maya because it is much more official than sketchup, also the proportions on the tower seem off.

Overall I like what you have started and if you make those changes there is a good chance it will be approved. Also you should try the style of explaining the section in a paragraph and then giving an image. Also when you are done you should post the full design in a separate thread labeled star 1.

The New Design Approval System
-By Cosmological

Well guys, given that I’ve been busy with school for the past couple months I’ve sort of fallen behind. Good news is that I’m on summer break! (Except for next week when I’m going on a canoeing and camping trip in the middle of nowhere, like there isn’t even cell reception) So I’ve caught up on all of the design progress I’ve missed and it comes to mind, what happens when I’m not here, progress halts. So I think I should do something about that, and this is one of those things. The new design approval system.

Okay here’s how it works for all of you designers out there. Say you have a galaxy in mind that you’d like to design. First thing you should do is tell me or post in my other thread for Designs in Progress. That way I and others will know to be on the lookout for a new design. To subject the design for approval once you have a draft of the design you like post it in a separate thread in that galaxy’s board titled Galaxy X Star Y. For even faster turn out PM me with a link. Once you have that thread posted I or others will look at your design and see whether or not it should be approved. If it is, congratulations your design is in the final game. If it isn’t I’ll provide feedback on what I’d like to see changed to make it approval worthy (unless the design isn’t unique at all and might just be trashed). Once you make the corrections I’ll look at it again and then most likely approve it (unless I get some random idea that would be great for your design).

Here is a more streamlined version
1. Post on Design in Progress Thread to reserve your galaxy
2. Create your design by yourself or with others.
3. Put the full design on a separate thread telling which star it is
4. An approved approver (I did that on purpose :P) will check your design using the criteria that I’m about to go in-depth with.
5. Your design is approved || Your design receives edits (possibly trashed)
6. Make those edits, resubmit for approval
7. The design gets approved

Okay because I can’t be the only one who goes over the potential designs I’ll go in-depth on how I judge a design for approval and approve other members to become design approvers (no drama please, or I’ll go MM on you). So here are some of the criteria I judge designs on and some styles for making designs.

My personal favorite style of a level design is on the paragraph picture basis. This is when you make a design and to explain what happens you have a paragraph or two explaining that Mario does in a certain planet/section followed by a picture of that section. For an example check out my Toxic Terror design. You should probably use this strategy unless you can make a very detailed drawing or a very descriptive written design.

When approving a design one should think of the originality of the design in general. Before approving a design make sure that it doesn't have an overused concept from either the 2 galaxy games or other 2.5 levels, this will allow for a more fun to play game in general.

Also check difficulty, make sure that the galaxy is following the general difficulty of the world that it is in. Keep in mind that 2.5 will have a difficulty that is a bit greater than that of Galaxy 2 but not insane.
Check for length, make sure that the design isn't a 1 minute level or a 20 minute level. Its good to have varying lengths in levels but we don’t want really short or really long levels. Also make sure that there are not filler sections, make sure that it is generally fun gameplay without lapses.

The final thing to keep in mind is the theme of a galaxy. If you are designing a galaxy like Rolling Rough we don’t want Bowser’s Fleet all over that place. I personally want 2.5 to be a bit darker than other Mario games but that should mainly show in the Bowser galaxies. Make sure the design is sticking to the theme established for set galaxy and not drifting off somewhere else and could become similar to another galaxy.

Well those are the criteria I’m looking for in approving a design (I’m also writing this at 1:30 AM so I’m probably forgetting something, why do I write all these posts at 1 AM I don’t know). If you are a designer follow these criteria and it will improve the chances of your design being approved. If you are one of the approvers that I am about to disclose, follow those guidelines when approving designs.
Now for the moment that everyone’s been waiting for, who are these new approvers?
I’ve divided them up into sections based on their overruling abilities. This means that someone higher up can revoke the approval of one of the lower approvers.
Highest Approvers
-Glem3 (I can’t contest him)
-Cosmological
-Astroluma (If he ever comes back)

Other Approvers
-Polari(can revoke the these other 2’s approvals)
-Mega-Mario
-NWPlayer123

Now what I really don’t want is people causing drama because they aren’t an approver. Any whining or complaining will result in an instant 2 day ban.

Well now that you all know who can approve and what is needed for an approval. Have fun with your current and future designing endeavors.

Happy Designing
-Cosmological

Well as a lot of you know I've been working on modeling my design for Coastline Cavern.

Its a tough thing to model being so natural so I had to learn how to make it look nice without making the poly count insane. I think this is a happy medium.

I've finished the general shape of the island. now all I need to do is add the top part and the cave with the star chips.

Hopefully it will be done by Sunday. (Also textures are placeholder)

Some have asked and I'm not changing my mind.

Glem3 and I will be designing this level when the time comes, and NO ONE ELSE. No matter how many ideas you may have I can guarantee that I have more and Glem3 probably does as well. I don't want to sound vain but Glem3 and I are the most experienced designers and want to do this by ourselves.

If you want to know when the galaxy will be designed it will be when we are happy with all of the other Bowser Level designs so we can wrap up the game in the most epic way possible. This galaxy can wait because with time will come better ideas, and we want this to be the best.

So end of story. I'm not locking this thread because I still want to be open to ideas but be warned Glem3 and I probably won't take all of them into mind.

I haven't noticed one of these on the forum, so I decided to make one. also what am I doing outside of the 2.5 part of kuribo64.

So its pretty self explanatory post cool examples of your artwork.

I'll start. Here is a desktop background that I made in Blender today while messing around with some settings.

I hope you all like it. Currently there are temporary textures and if Glem3 wishes to texture it himself he can.

Well this is usually the thing that us admins do in our own forums but given the severe actions done that this member has done I think it must be discussed by everyone.

Recently cosmological has had some strange activity, here are some of the things that have caught my eye.
-Leaking secret information from boards such as The Boss Office and Staff Forum to the general public
-Making outrageous ban threats to members on the IRC without being Arisotura
-he has an outrageously low postcount only 71 posts in 361 days of being registered
-Does not do his admin duties because of outlandish reasons such as "attending the #13 school in America"
-Posting in Relaxland
-Managing to go from being a 0 post user to an administrator in no time at all, very suspicious
-has problems with members bashing other members

I don't know guys. This guy is really unnerving. Always lurking in the shadows only to come out and post a full design or overhall thread. I don't know about you guys but he might be a Arisotura rereg, given how much power he has gotten.

I'll keep looking into this and edit my post if needed

Discuss.

I too notice some weird behavior with this member as well. This thread is very suspicious as well. It was posted at nearly the same time as cosmological had a thread made for him.

A potential reason for this is that gridatttack could be a cosmological rereg. And as discussed in the other thread we think that cosmological might be a Arisotura rereg.

This is pretty scary, what if the entire staff are just reregs of Arisotura, this could mean true dictatorship. We must keep this situation under hand before Arisotura discovers what we know.

Guys get this, I just PMed this guy asking about the potential of him being Mega-Mario.

He quickly responded saying:
"No man, I'm definitely not Mega-Mario! How could I, and how could you ever find out.

Also I'm not a brainwashing alien, like my brainwasher is in repair in Saturn right now, and why would I want to team with Marvin the Martian he's a complete jerk"

Very suspicious guys, I'd have Mega-Mario ban this guy, but at appears that Mega-MArio is banned himself. Dirbaio you are our only hope, unless its too late and dirb is a Mega rereg aswell.

As usual when I'm around 30-40% done with a design I'll post some progress.

I've had this in mind for a long time now and now I'm posting what I've drawn.

Planet 1:
One this planet Mario lands and there are whittles and gearmos. They tell Mario How Bowser invaded their solar system (galaxy). And how their planet happened to survive Bowser's machine, but now got hurdled into deep space. The goal of the planet it to climb the central tower in the level and catch a launch star into the solar system.

Planet 2:
Mario lands on the bottom planet in this drawing. He must platform on small chunks of the planet while avoiding lava pillars. He then lands on the large tube and walks along it until he gets to the other side. On the tube are enemies such as goombas and dry bones. The second planet in the chain is partially broken up. Mario will have to fight some burn bits on the way. On the third planet in the chain mario will have to fight some piranha plants on his way to the tube. The final tube goes to the extractor.

Hmm, I wonder how long its been? I think somewhere around 8 months since I claimed this design and now I finally have something to show for it.

I've had ideas for a while now but I found them to all be too bland and generic but I finally thought of a new idea that i think is pretty good. I designed this as a combination of Coastline Cavern and Sky High.

Coastline Cavern Star 1
-by cosmological

Planet 1:

Mario starts on a medium sized planet. In front of him are some mountains, behind him is a large castle spire. To his left he sees a small lake and some rivers. The weather is a nice sunny day. While exploring the planet Mario finds a cloud flower, he attempts to climb up the mountains with it but he isn't able to reach the top, even with his cloud powerup. While exploring more of the planet mario finds a weird looking switch. He presses it to find that the weather has suddenly become stormy and it rain clouds are appearing across the level.

When Mario returns to the mountains he finds that rain clouds have appears circling the mountain. Using the cloud Suit he can now get all the way up by jumping on top of the rain clouds. When Mario reaches the top of the mountain he finds another cloud flower. From the top of the mountain Mario can see a launch star on top of the castle but no way to get over to it, even with his cloud powerup. ON the second mountain Mario finds another one of the weird switches, he presses it to see that the weather has become nice again. When it gets sunny again Mario can jump across some of the clouds that appear in between the mountain and the castle and proceed.

Planet 2:

This is a bit confusing I know, I labeled all of the sides and corners like a standard 6 sided dice in which every opposite side adds up to 7
Also sorry for no color, I don't know how I want the colors to go quite yet.
After taking the launch star Mario finds himself on a cube planet (starting on the corner D). The cube is currently dry and Mario finds himself suck in an area that he cannot get out of. In the area he finds one of the mysterious switches from before. Having nothing to lose he presses it to have the cube fill with water. Mario can now swim over one of the barriers that he previously couldn't.

Once Mario has swam over the barrier he finds himself at another barrier. He tries to swim under it but there is a cage that has appeared. Mario has to find the mysterious switch in the current area to proceed. Once he presses the switch he can now walk under the barrier. After walking though some areas, while battling some enemies he reaches a staircase like structure (shown in the bottom drawing on side 6). On top (can change) of it is a switch that he presses raises the water level again allowing himself to continue onward (I might add some platforms that you can jump on when I model this to make it quicker). Then Mario finds himself at some platforms again. With a few long jumps Mario finds himself at a wall jump section (shown on side 6). Mario walljumps up it then makes a quick long jump Mario finds himself at the launch star.

Planet 3:

When Mario lands on this planet he notices something missing, the water switch. Instead he finds that the weather is continuously shifting from sunny to rainy as if on a timer of some sort. Starting on the bottom part of the planet Mario finds a small incline near a waterfall. When the timer shifts to sunny the waterfall goes away and Mario can make a longjump into a cave located behind it. Mario goes through the cave fighting a few enemies. He emerges at a large lake with a wall in the middle of it. Mario jumps in to realize that there is a small hole in the water that he can swim though. Once the weather turns stormy the lake's water level rises and Mario can swim though the small hole.

When Mario emerges on the other side of the lake he finds a cloud flower next to a mountain. Like on the first planet Mario cannot scale the mountainside with the cloud powerup, but instead he has to wait until it is sunny again for regular clouds to appear to help him up. On the first plateau Mario finds another cloud flower next to another cliff side. This time he has to wait until the rain clouds come around until he can get up it. On the second plateau he finds a third cloud flower. he needs to wait until the nice weather to get up the final cliff, but this time he has to worry about floating enemies trying to knock him off.

When Mario gets to the top of the planet he sees a large crystal with a star waiting for him inside it. He quickly breaks it and gets his star but takes in the amazing view on top of the planet first.

Well as always I hope you liked the design. This one took a lot of thinking and a lot of time drawing. I can't wait to model it though. I'm also nearly done Coastline Cavern's second star and just need to finish up one quick drawing.

I'm back! Any rumors you heard about me quitting are all 100% false, I just happened to go camping for the last week and a half.

Its been a while but I've noticed a sharp dip in progress so I think we need to do something about it. I'd like to address some issues and some solutions we have discussed implementing to help progress in the future.

One of our biggest problems is the absence of our leader Glem3. Currently he is in nearly absolute power which demotivates people, because he goes on long breaks without telling people then comes back to reject half of our progress from when he was gone. With the big fear of having stuff rejected member's decide to just not do anything while Glem3 is gone. This makes it so we never get anything done unless Glem3 is here. We do have other people such as I who can approve designs etc. but stuff that I may like Glem3 often thinks differently and stuff people thought was approved is no longer approved and people had made even more progress on the idea. I know that I can judge wrong sometimes but I honestly think having more stuff is more beneficial to the project than less "perfect" stuff. Also knowing that glem can overrule my decisions makes me not want to approve designs.

Because of this problem some of us have came up with a new system. This would be a complete overhaul to the entire approval system not just the design aspect like I posted earlier. MM and I have worked it out and this is what we want to pitch to Glem3 when he comes back. we don't mean this to be an overthrow to glem3 at all we just want progress to happen when certain powerful members are missing.
Here's the system:
Lets say some member makes a design, model, music etc. once the member posts it glem3 will have a week to approve it. If he doesn't the design will go to me or a leader of some other field for approval. The design will then be approved or rejected by that person or group. If it is approved Glem3 can't touch it, it will remain approved indefinitely. When we finally get to pitch the idea to glem we will lay out more of it when we work out all the details.

Another problem is slightly my fault. Unfortunately when I went camping away from the internet I wasn't clear enough to the members that I was camping. Therefore during this time period people started rumors such as that I quit. For clarification I've been here for 2 and a half years I would not just walk out, if I were to quit, it would be spectacular and there would be no doubt in anyone's mind. But anyways, people believed these rumors and declared the project dead and people argued and moved to other projects. This kind of behavior is really counterproductive and it demoralizes some members that want to help. we've had a specific member quit the project and gave everyone a bad time before he left (trying hard to refrain using profanity, but swearing only decreases your argument's validity). If all we do is sulk around and do nothing he's won, he killed progress for us because he didn't like some aspect. What we should do instead is prove him wrong. If we can come together and get stuff done we will beat him, show that we don't need him to do stuff. If we act like we do need him and he comes back we'll treat him like a god. This extends to all members who leave the project either "permanently" or just temporarily.

Third thing I'll discuss is a trailer. I've had one planned since before summer but we've never gotten to one. Look at our old trailer, it has over 200,000 views, it even has more views than the Newer release trailer. There are a lot of people out there who are looking forward to the hack we need to work our hardest in these last weeks of summer to get something out there for the people. We have plenty of designs we can make models. Our problem is texturing. We need to recruit more people who can texture and a trailer can do that. We need to get in gear working and being motivational to members who are doing stuff. By keeping a positive attitude even when times seem hard such as now we can do stuff.

Well I think we need to make an updated new trailer thread with everything we want and then get hard at work on that. Once we get a trailer out people will know that we are still alive and we need to be very clear in what we need so we can get more people and speed up progress. I'll start by finishing my Coastline Cavern Star 2 design and posting that as well as starting on modeling Stormshine Star 1. I think if everyone looks hard enough they can find something to work on. Once we get the ball rolling it will be hard to stop.

As I mentioned in the previous post I will be making the models for this galaxy as well. As I mentioned in my new thread we need to get the progress ball rolling or at least chisel the progress cube into a ball to then roll :P.

So anyways here's my progress from today for Stormshine. I'd say the first planet is 90% done, I might make a few tweaks here and there but otherwise its good. It currently has temporary textures that either I or someone else will eventually change.

I'm loving the progress, so why not more?

Today I modeled the second planet of Stormshine. Hopefully tomorrow I can make the third one. Its nice to see that MrRean already has the first planet in game and NWP is working on giving it proper textures.

As always only temporary textures. We're taking off good chunks of the progress cube, we'll be rolling in no time!
