I am working on orchestrating the toad brigade to be performed by a student orchestra. Are the toad brigade making an appearance in galaxy 2.5? I'd love to give them the orchestral treatment. |

Yes, it would be performed by a live orchestra. I have an arrangement for them, but some work needs to be done. I can't guarantee this will end up panning out, but I am very invested in it. |

Unfortunately, I wouldn't have the orchestra for more than a short piece, and the toad brigade theme arrangement I have is mostly done and a good length. I would love to do some other work for this project, though, once I've figured out the toad brigade theme. |

I have Logic Pro, but I'm not good with it yet. I will work on it, and I think I'll be able to make it sound decent. |

Here is a MIDI version of the arrangement. It should be performed today, but things could go wrong.

It didn't end up sounding the best. I mean, it was a student orchestra reading this for the first time and given only 20 minutes, and I am bad at this. I hope it's usable in some way.

This was a one-time deal, unfortunately. My teacher arranged the recording, and I'm lucky to have gotten this performed at all. Personally, I don't think the mistakes would be too noticeable underneath the sound of textboxes and other environmental noise. I'm glad I got to do this, though, it makes me realize just how much work and effort the original composers put into the galaxy.
The teacher had this really nifty and horribly expensive device to get such a nice recording. I forget what it's called, I could ask, but it's in the $1000 range. I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but I don't think it'll be easy to get much in the way of orchestral recordings for this project. You need arrangers, performers, and probably lots of money or influence. If any of you can procure an orchestra, however, I'd be happy to arrange music, and make PDFs of full scores and parts for all instruments. |

Sorry, another full session just ain't gonna happen. But, if some of you guys have decent microphones of some kind, and can play instruments, a few live solos can really spice up an otherwise all-synth piece. I think that's probably the best approach. I myself can play piano somewhat, but that's an instrument that's easier to just synthesize, to fix mistakes later.
I mean, some of the best themes in the games have only one or two live instruments (teresa waltz, puzzle plank) and a lot are entirely electronic. |

What can I say, for that kind of sound you're gonna have to reuse old themes from the original games. Some versions from Mario and Sonic at the Olympics series utilize an orchestra well; I saw you already used their fantastic arrangement of the main theme in the trailer (though it is just live brass and a string quartet.) The Winter games has a nice arrangement of Good Egg galaxy with full orchestra, and the London one has an a cool arrangement of the Dino Piranha theme with live brass and electric guitars.
All I'm saying is, as much as I'd love an orchestra at my disposal, that's just not possible in the near future. My school's orchestra and other groups are all busy, and while I am trying to foster good relationships with everyone I know related to it, I can't just ask 40 or 50 people for a favor, and to pay them would be quite expensive, and even if I could I have a feeling that the orchestra just doesn't work that way. I think it would be good to figure out which of us can play instruments and have a mic of some kind. It'd be a lot easier to get a nice recording in a small room with only one player to worry about, and single instruments can really make a huge difference. Heck, lot's of professional games can't even get recording session in for their soundtracks. Then we'd mix it in with the synth orchestra and some electronic effects, and it'd sound pretty good. |

Well, I've already arranged for orchestra and dabbled in band, maybe over the summer I can try a band arrangement. Also, I am going to go ahead with some changes to the Toad brigade recording- I can at least add some synth and make it loop properly, and see how it sounds then. (Perhaps cut out the second verse, though I'm still not sure it's that much of a problem to have one or two wrong notes.) Do you guys have any recommendations for galaxy-sounding synths? I've been working so much with sheet music lately I'm rusty on the electronic end of production, though I plan to master logic over the summer as well.
Also, on an unrelated note, what are your thoughts on the Mario and Sonic arrangements? I'm biased, I admit as a huge fan of Sega's sound team as well, but I also think their relegation to a dumb party game would allow them to sound fresh in a proper, galactic context. Besides the arrangement used in the trailer, this one stands out as fantastic, if Good Egg galaxy in any way reappears. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AgNnPoa8YQ Also there are Dino Piranha and Puzzle Plank remixes with live performances as well. I am assuming due to the difficulty in making new bosses that Dino Piranha will appear? Apologies if I'm barking up the wrong tree with those, if you want all new music or don't want to borrow from past games or they just don't work. I just love the arrangements. |

Wow, that's really great! I love the piano writing, and the build in energy. To nitpick, I'd say I'm not sure about the sound of the drums. Maybe either a subtler and/or more electronic sound would work better for those? They're a little hyper and maybe too poppy for an anticipation theme imo. Also, how would it loop?
(I feel bad saying about the drums since I can't write percussion for crap, so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt.) |

Could you possibly upload a version without percussion? I'd love to hear what that sounds like. |

Alright, thanks GintokiPianist!
Also, if we made a new starball theme, it couldn't possibly be interactive like in the galaxy games. If the interactivity is important, maybe we should keep it the same like they did from galaxy 1 to 2, unless of course there's a way to write sequenced music. Do we have one? |

Now it's making me think Of King of Kings from Galaxy 2, except a lot better! You'd probably have to get rid of the ritardano at the end to make it loop in-game, but if we ever release an album, that'd be a good ending. A thought I had was to make the strings held or tremolo, because I'm not sure the synths work as a percussive sound. Maybe drums could go back in, but a different kind, either a more orchestral sound, or on the far end, a more electronic one.
And about the "interactive" thing, yeah, I meant the live tempo changes. With streaming music, crossfading and adding layers sounds like it should be doable, but without making or editing sequenced music, I don't see how we could make a different track that functions like the starball theme. |

It sounds great, but I don't think such drastic tempo changes really work within the Mario Galaxy Style- at least as gameplay music. Almost all the stage music in the Galaxy games stick to steady tempos, and right now this sounds like it would accompany a cutscene, or another non-interactive part of the game. I think your idea of splitting the piece in two is a good one; the new section is distinct and emotional. I'm not sure what it could be used for after only hearing some of it, though I still think the first section has a distinct "King of Kings" from Galaxy 2 vibe to it.
Update: I've spliced in part of a different performance from that session into my Toad Brigade arrangement. Does this help? https://soundcloud.com/robot-master-peckman/toadb-mix1 |

Yeah, I don't really know how to do that though. Heck, despite the title of that file, it's not actually mixed either- I just meant I mixed and matched sections. I've been out of electronic music production for a bit, but over the summer I'll try to work on that. Maybe I could even add some synth in sections for that extra galaxy sound. Glad you like it so far, though! |
